Aelish ventures back to DAR to reclaim her beloved Thagar. As she reviews the devastation in the N.W. Quadrant from Yasteron’s bombs, she agonizes over whether to annihilate the entire kingdom or forge ahead with a peace treaty in accordance with her Oath of Peace. While Aelish struggles with that decision, Isabela tries to recover from the unfathomable betrayal by her first love, Glen, a Yasteron spy, and her capture and torture by Yasteron soldiers in her research lab. While in DAR, Aelish discovers that one of the deadly vials Glen brought to the dinner party in her home, survived the bombing of the underwater bunker, where he was being interrogated by Thagar. The vial contains scientific information that Isabela has been searching for, in order to stop a burgeoning climate syndrome already causing early symptoms worldwide. Aelish defies the medici in DAR, who are unable to save Thagar’s life, and with the help of Isabela brings him to Earth for lifesaving human medical treatment. Despite the bombs crippling essential magic within DAR and destroying important tactical equipment, she secures an exit strategy to bring a severely injured Thagar to Earth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover the Christian roots of the values we prize in western society. Is Christianity history? Or is Christian history the deepest explanation of the modern world? Today in the west, many consider the church to be dead or dying. Christianity is seen as outdated, bigoted and responsible for many of society’s problems. This leaves many believers embarrassed about their faith and many outsiders wary of religion. But what if the Christian message is not the enemy of our modern Western values, but the very thing that makes sense of them? In this fascinating book, Glen Scrivener takes readers on a journey to discover how the teachings of Jesus not only turned the ancient world upside down, but continue to underpin the way we think of life, worth, and meaning. Far from being a relic from the past, the distinctive ideas of Christianity, such as freedom, kindness, progress and equality, are a crucial part of the air that we breathe. As author Glen Scrivener says in his introduction: “The extraordinary impact of Christianity is seen in the fact that we don’t notice it". This is a book for both believers and sceptics-giving Christians confidence to be open about their faith and showing non-Christians the ways in which the message of Jesus makes sense of their most cherished beliefs. Whoever you are, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for the values you hold dear as you discover the power and profundity of Jesus and his revolution.

Book The Etiquette of Early Northern Verse

Download or read book The Etiquette of Early Northern Verse written by Roberta Frank and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2022-05-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Etiquette of Early Northern Verse, Roberta Frank peers into the northern poet’s workshop, eavesdropping as Old English and Old Norse verse reveal their craft secrets. This book places two vernacular poetries of the long Viking Age into conversation, revealing their membership in a single community of taste, a traditional stylistic ecology that did serious political and historical work. Each chapter seeks the codes of a now-extinct verse technique. The first explores the underlying architecture of the two poetries, their irregularities of pace, startling formal conventions, and tight verbal detail work. The passage of time has worn away most of the circumstantial details that literary scholars in later periods take for granted, but the public relations savvy and aural and syntactic signals of early northern verse remain to some extent retrievable and relatable, an etiquette prized and presumably understood by its audiences. The second and longest chapter investigates the techniques used by early northern poets to retrieve and organize the symmetries of language. It illustrates how supererogatory alliteration and rhyme functioned as aural punctuation, marking off structural units and highlighting key moments in the texts. The third and final chapter describes the extent to which both corpora reveled in negations, litotes, indirection, and down-toners, modes that forced audiences to read between half-lines, to hear what was not said. By decluttering and stripping away excess, by drawing words through a tight mesh of meter, alliteration, and rhyme, the early northern poet filtered out dross and stitched together a poetics of stark contrasts and forebodings. Poets and lovers of poetry of all periods and places will find much to enjoy here. So will students in Old English and Old Norse courses.

Book The Books of Ezra and Nehemiah

Download or read book The Books of Ezra and Nehemiah written by Hannah K. Harrington and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2022-05-10 with total page 699 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The books of Ezra and Nehemiah represent a significant turning point in biblical history. They tell the story not only of the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem but also of the resurrection of God’s people from the death of exile. Hannah Harrington thus begins her commentary with an evocative description of these books as “the story of a new Israel forged out of the old” and “the text of a people clinging to their genealogical past and attempting to preserve their heritage while walking forward into uncharted territory.” Throughout this commentary, Harrington combines analytical research on the language and culture behind the books of Ezra and Nehemiah with challenging thoughts for the Christian church today, bringing to bear a unique perspective on these books not as the end of Old Testament history but as early documents of the Second Temple period. Accordingly, Harrington incorporates a wealth of information from other Jewish literature of the time to freshly illuminate many of the topics and issues at hand while focusing on the interpretation and use of these books for Christian life today.
