This book was released on 1994 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In letters to their homeland, Danes who emigrated to North America from 1842 to 1946 here give vivid, personal impressions of how they began life anew, far from the familiar surroundings of home. Passages selected by the authors from among more than a thousand emigrant letters provide a unique glimpse of life on the American prairie as well as on Chicago's notorious South Side. The narratives are presented in a series of themes, ranging from the crossing of the Atlantic to an inside look at the United States. Although few regretted the decision to emigrate, nearly all suffered pangs of homesickness, and many attempted to imbue their children with a sense of "Danishness." These Danes of the past come alive as they describe both successes and failures in their own words. It is the hope of the Danes Worldwide Archives that "A New Life" will help to strengthen the historical identity of Danish-Americans"--Back cover.

Book Warm Bricks at My Feet

Download or read book Warm Bricks at My Feet written by Marian Love and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2014-04 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By writing my family's memoirs, I have tried to open a window into the life of my family, first generation Danish immigrants who came to America, not to escape an oppressive government or economic crisis but to seek ownership and control of their lives and their future. I describe their love of family as well as their internal and cultural struggles. My parents and siblings faced numerous challenges and uncertainties while raising a large family, struggling through the Great Depression and renewing their determination amidst successes and failures, joys and tragedies. My family wore the stamp of first generation immigrants with all the uncertainties of living in a new country and speaking only a foreign language. Nevertheless, we had the sense that we were special though our home, clothes and other worldly possessions declared otherwise. By some small miracle, we all survived and achieved varying degrees of success, each in our own way. Writing this book has been a journey of heart and mind as I recount stories about my family and myself. Like most children, I seek to understand who I am from my origin and experiences. My parents left indelible marks on me, my siblings and the generations that have followed. May this memoir enlighten and give context and a measure of insight to family and friends and all those who wonder about the experiences of life we share with our fellow travelers everywhere.

Book Scandinavians in Michigan

Download or read book Scandinavians in Michigan written by Jeffrey W. Hancks and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2006-05-12 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Scandinavian countries, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, are commonly grouped together by their close historic, linguistic, and cultural ties. Their age-old bonds continued to flourish both during and after the period of mass immigration to the United States in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Scandinavians felt comfortable with each other, a feeling forged through centuries of familiarity, and they usually chose to live in close proximity in communities throughout the Upper Midwest of the United States. Beginning in the middle of the nineteenth century and continuing until the 1920s, hundreds of thousands left Scandinavia to begin life in the United States and Canada. Sweden had the greatest number of its citizens leave for the United States, with more than one million migrating between 1820 and 1920. Per capita, Norway was the country most affected by the exodus; more than 850,000 Norwegians sailed to America between 1820 and 1920. In fact, Norway ranks second only to Ireland in the percentage of its population leaving for the New World during the great European migration. Denmark was affected at a much lower rate, but it too lost more than 300,000 of its population to the promise of America. Once gone, the move was usually permanent; few returned to live in Scandinavia. Michigan was never the most popular destination for Scandinavian immigrants. As immigrants began arriving in the North American interior, they settled in areas to the west of Michigan, particularly in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Iowa, and North and South Dakota. Nevertheless, thousands pursued their American dream in the Great Lakes State. They settled in Detroit and played an important role in the city’s industrial boom and automotive industry. They settled in the Upper Peninsula and worked in the iron and copper mines. They settled in the northern Lower Peninsula and worked in the logging industry. Finally, they settled in the fertile areas of west Michigan and contributed to the state’s burgeoning agricultural sector. Today, a strong Scandinavian presence remains in town names like Amble, in Montcalm County, and Skandia, in Marquette County, and in local culinary delicacies like æbleskiver, in Greenville, and lutefisk, found in select grocery stores throughout the state at Christmastime.

Himself. Children and grandchildren of the immigrant are beginning. Now to reveal a growing interest in the westward movement of their ancestors, and historians have long since recognized the importance of that period in American history which between 1815 and 1914 added to our population thirty five million Europeans. Professor Marcus Lee Hansen, the late, brilliant historian of the immigrant, suggests as the first step in mining this rich field of information that a survey be made to locate the raw materials. To make such a survey of that segment of immigration which deals with the Danish Americans is the aim of this bibliography.
