Download or read book Cosmologies of Pure Realms and the Rhetoric of Pollution written by Yohan Yoo and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-05-30 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collaboration between two scholars from different fields of religious studies draws on three comparative data sets to develop a new theory of purity and pollution in religion, arguing that a culture’s beliefs about cosmological realms shapes its pollution ideas and its purification practices. The authors of this study refine Mary Douglas’ foundational theory of pollution as "matter out of place," using a comparative approach to make the case that a culture’s cosmology designates which materials in which places constitute pollution. By bringing together a historical comparison of Ancient Near Eastern and Mediterranean religions, an ethnographic study of indigenous shamanism on Jeju Island, Korea, and the reception history of biblical rhetoric about pollution in Jewish and Christian cultures, the authors show that a cosmological account of purity works effectively across multiple disparate religious and cultural contexts. They conclude that cosmologies reinforce fears of pollution, and also that embodied experiences of purification help generate cosmological ideas. Providing an innovative insight into a key topic of ritual studies, this book will be of vital interest to scholars and graduate students in religion, biblical studies, and anthropology.

Download or read book Think to New Worlds written by Joshua Blu Buhs and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2024 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is about Charles Fort, his followers, and the surprising influence they have had on science fiction, the avant-garde, UFOlogy, and more broadly on the role of spirituality and conspiracy in the modern world. Fort was an author and maverick philosopher who wrote four non-fiction books about anomalies-rains of frogs, mysterious disappearances, unexplained lights in the sky-for which he offered hypotheses that even he did not (always) accept as true. His books developed into a monistic philosophy that denounced science as a machine for generating truth. In his view, science was a small part of a larger system in which truth and falsity were constantly transforming one into the other. This was not a rejection of the modern world but, instead, its fulfillment: Fort prophesied the next stage in intellectual evolution after the scientific era. He inspired four overlapping groups: members of the Fortean Society; science fiction fans and writers; avant-garde artists; and flying saucer enthusiasts. First We Must Think to New Worlds takes up each of these groups in turn to ask: How can the human imagination be expanded? What is the fundamental structure of the universe? And, how does power move? As they developed their responses, Fort's followers mixed Forteanism with Fundamentalism, New Agery, and conspiracy, as well as a host of other forms of modern enchantments, such as the ironic imagination, scientific wonder, and Theosophical syncretism. Each chapter is interrupted by and concludes with shorter sections that focus on particular Forteans or Fortean events as a way to deepen themes"--

Download or read book Realms Of Forgotten Worlds written by Albert Taylor and published by Albert Taylor. This book was released on 2017-06-26 with total page 1388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introducing a fabulous sci-fi adventure that will take your reading experience to a whole other level. Author Albert Taylor puts together a super complex adventure where you as the reader decide on how the story develops. Sounds too good to be true; well it’s here and packed with 71 different ways to make or break your story. It’s your story so you decide. The author Albert Taylor has been inspired by sci-fi, even before he could even walk, so this is the masterpiece he has been yearning to create; for a very, very long time. Ever since he was a child he has dreamed of creating his own style of science fiction, and finally it has become a possibility. Much more than just a simple book, the author has packed it with another dream; the dream of converting a simple book into something the reader could take and modify to his or her own desire! If you never liked the end of your favorite story, well here you actually have the option of changing that. You can end the story as tragically or heroically as you want to. You can run or hide, or just confront the multitudes of challenges that will try and end your story.Basically, if you are accustomed to the author leading you by the hand throughout the story to the very end, you will find that it’s not going to happen here. Consider that style to be kindergarten, for readers who depend on someone else telling them that there is no other way to go. Here you will have to come up with your own plan of survival, or face the consequences for reckless decisions. In this story the concept of parallel worlds is looked at in a more drastic, real life type of way. You’re pretty much faced with the big question of, what would I do if I discovered a parallel world. A million things probably come to mind, along with the big question of how to get back home. That’s the story in the nutshell, and you can go many ways, and even end up in some places where you would like to hang out a bit more. You can go that route, but you may find that it’s not at all that easy since your very presence has moved entire worlds! Your presence may have altered a bit more than you may have imagined, but leave that to book II, which is in reality your goal. If you survive and reach book II, then you have successfully reconstructed something compatible to the original story. You may want to get there another way though, which is not at all bad, and you may even be shocked to find out that there was a much better way to get to the end.
