Book Almy s Supreme Dahlias for 1930

Download or read book Almy s Supreme Dahlias for 1930 written by F. W. C. Almy and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-07 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Almy's Supreme Dahlias for 1930: Seedlings, Choice Novelties and Varieties of Unusual Merit From Both East and West It gives me great pleasure to place before all Dahlia lovers the following, each of which is a distinct addition to the list of new creations. I grew practically all of the new Introductions of sufficient merit to be on the Honor Roll for 1928, and many beside, and I can truthfully say my great new seedling, Supreme Glory was in size superior to all, and in most other points as well. This is a Decorative, seedling of Elite Glory, a beautiful golden yellow with reverse of all petals heavily flushed with the red of its parent - Elite Glory and with face of some petals slightly tinted with the same, particularly in the early blooms, making a flower of rare beauty. The petals are very long and wide, and the center is absolutely full, always. One of the first to bloom, it is full of flowers till frost, and is the most prolific big dahlia I know. I have picked 5 flowers, each 10 inches or over, from a single plant in one day and there were seven more blooms partly opened or showing color. The stems, which are cane stiff, will average, at least, 21/é to 3 feet in length (and I have cut them 5 feet), carried over a spreading plant 4 to 5 feet tall. It requires no disbudding as the crown bud is so much larger than the two side buds that they do not bother at all. The stems are leafless for 18 to 20 inches and very few joints, for balance of their length. Its prolificacy of bloom is due to the great number of flower stalks thrown up, which start from the lower joints and grow far above the bush. It is a fine keeper in the Show Room, and absolutely the most spectacular of any I ever grew in the gar den. The flowers, which are deep as well as large in diameter, have been grown to 1114 inches with no feeding, forcing or disbudding, and the 'plant is prae tically immune to insect pests, even the borers sel dom attacking its hard and woody stem. Considered by visitors and practically all who saw it, as the outstanding variety in my gardens. Tubers, $15 each; 3 for $40. Plants, each; 3 for $20. Book Gladiolus Dahlias Roses Perennials Ornamentals 1927 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Gladiolus Dahlias Roses Perennials Ornamentals 1927 Classic Reprint written by Langlois Floral Garden and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-14 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gladiolus, Dahlias, Roses, Perennials, Ornamentals, 1927 Culture: Dahlias will thrive in any soil that will produce a good crop of potatoes. They grow best in a sunny location. The soil should be spaded deep. Do not use fertilizer at planting time. The tubers should be set three feet apart each way. Dig a hole six inches deep and lay the tuber flat in the bottom, eye si-de up. Drive a stout stake near the eye at time of planting. Fill the hole about half full of soil. When the plant has made two pair of leaves, pinch out the top above the second pair. Cutivate thoroughly, gradually filling in the hole. When buds appear, pinch out all but one on a stem and also the next pair or two of shoots below the bud. This practice of pinching out the top and the buds makes a dwarfer and bushier plant with large flowers on long stems suitable for cutting and exhibition. Keep the plants well watered during the dry sea son. After frost has killed the plant, cut the top off close to the ground, dig carefully and store on a dry, cool place free from frost. It is better to turn the clump with stem end down in storage. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Walker's Up-to-Date Dahlias, 1924 I desire to call particular attention to the Dahlias listed under heading, Leading Novelty Dahlias Page 2. These have proven, both in the amateur garden and with the professional grower, to be satisfactory in every respect. I do not make flower exhibits at the Fall Dahlia Exhibitions or force my plants to get flowers that are far above the average size that we see at such exhibitions. My plants are grown as nature grows them. Bulbs selected from such stock should give far better results. I guarantee all tubers to be true to name and to arrive in perfect condition. But to guarantee the life of a plant, while under cultivation, in the hands of another person is to make a dealer responsible for the errors and inexperience of others, not to men tion freaks of weather, and unfavorable seasons, cut worms, improper planting, unfavorable loca tions and many others, which the dealer has no control over. It is therefore unreasonable to ask dealers to be responsible for the life of the plant throughout the season.
