Download or read book What Did You Do in the Cold War Daddy written by Ann Curthoys and published by NewSouth. This book was released on 2014-09-01 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cold War was a turbulent time to grow up in. Family ties were tested, friendships were torn apart and new beliefs forged out of the ruins of old loyalties. In this book, through twelve evocative stories of childhood and early adulthood in Australia during the Cold War years, writers from vastly different backgrounds explore how global political events affected the intimate space of home, family life and friendships. Some writers were barely in their teens when they felt the first touches of their parents’ political lives, both on the Left and the Right. Others grew up in households well attuned to activism across the spectrum, including anti-communism, workers’ rights, anti-Vietnam War, anti-apartheid and women’s rights. Sifting through the key political and social developments in Australia from the end of World War II to the early 1990s, including the referendum to ban the Communist Party of Australia, the rise of ‘the Movement’ and the Labor split, and post-war migration, this book is a powerful and poignant telling of the ways in which the political is personal.

This book was released on 2019-09-23 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American journalist Tom Brokaw gave us the term the Greatest Generation in his 1988 book of that title. It generally refers to the those who were born between 1910 and 1924. They are the men and women who lived through the Great Depression, fought in World War II and are the parents of the Baby Boomer generation. Sadly, there are so few of them left.Daddy, what did you do in the war? tells the story of Bob McBeth, a young man from Toronto, Canada, who joined the Royal Canadian Air Force with dreams of becoming a pilot and fighting the Germans in World War II. Sidelined by poor eyesight, he was instead assigned to an entertainment unit where he was Master of Ceremonies in All Clear, one of several travelling shows mounted by the RCAF. The show played to thousands of Allied troops, first in Canada and the USA, and later in England and Europe.Like many baby boomers, the authors are proud of what their parents, the greatest generation, had accomplished and were eager to hear all about their exploits in the war. Daddy, what did you do in the war? is not a story of heroism in fierce battle. Nor is it a story of death and dying, although there was plenty of that going on at the time. It is however, a funny, first-person tale of one man's experience in the war and well worth the read.

Book excerpt: ‘Zeppelin Nights is social history at its best... White creates a vivid picture of a city changed forever by war’ The Times 2018 marks the centenary of the end of the First World War. In those four decisive years, London was irrevocably changed. Soldiers passed through the capital on their way to the front and wounded men were brought back to be treated in London’s hospitals. At night, London plunged into darkness for fear of Zeppelins that raided the city. Meanwhile, women escaped the drudgery of domestic service to work as munitionettes. Full employment put money into the pockets of the poor for the first time. Self-appointed moral guardians seize the chance to clamp down on drink, frivolous entertainment and licentious behaviour. Even against a war-torn landscape, Londoners were determined to get on with their lives, firmly resolved not to let Germans or puritans spoil their enjoyment. Peopled with patriots and pacifists, clergymen and thieves, bluestockings and prostitutes, Jerry White’s magnificent panorama reveals a battle-scarred yet dynamic, flourishing city. ‘Jerry White's name on a title page is a guarantee of a lively, compassionate book full of striking incidents and memorable images... This is a fast-paced social history that never stumbles... A well-orchestrated polyphony of voices that brings history alive’ Guardian

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presented in collaboration with Amnesty International, this stunning collection of more than a hundred posters charts a visual journey across more than a century of political and social activism. From the suffragettes of the early twentieth century to the upheavals of the 1960s and 1970s to contemporary, social-media-driven demonstrations of dissent and resistance, this illustrative history features iconic art from the archives of Amnesty International, work by world-renowned artists, and spontaneous posters from short-lived print collectives and activists on the ground. The Art of Protest covers key campaigns, global and local, including the refugee and climate crises, women's empowerment, nuclear disarmament, LGBTQ activism, Black Lives Matter, and issues around war and the misuse of the world's resources. These are images that have pushed boundaries as they give voice to the marginalized and confront those who would deny people their rights to peace and equality.
