Leaving his library and study to his secretaries, and wishing to consider matters by himself--so fearful had he become of the king's secret agent since the latter had revealed the state of his private resources--and so suspicious of his subordinates, Mazarin was closeted in a little box of a room looking out into the garden. Stripped of its last blooms by Padeloup for the court, it was dismal. Besides, this nook was in the heart of a turret, and had been a cell--the thought it inspired was not cheerful. He was aroused out of one of those fits of musing which drowsiness often succeeded, by a joyous laugh, and two light hands suddenly encompassed his forehead and blinded him. "Guess who it is, and I will kiss you!" cried a pleasant voice. It was an old trick--he recognized Marie by the utterance, either way. "My little darling!" said he. "Am I right? You are a living sunbeam!" He gazed on her admiringly, and held up his parchment cheek for the reward for solving that transparent enigma. "Of all my nieces--and I have my (fuiver full, thank Heaven--you are the best beloved!" She looked roguish. "If that be so, how well you have kept the secret these seventeen years, nunkey." "Oh, I did not want to create any jealousy!" "Fortunately, I guessed this marked affection, uncle, and loved you as though you had made it public." "Moreover, it would have puffed you up with pride--a cardinal sin--to let you see all the good I thought of you and for you. When your sisters were growing up and nourishing, I used to say in my sleeve: 'Look at the conceited coquettes!' Little do they know that little Marie will take the sheen off them." "Dear! Am I to be the honor and the glory of the family?" "The hour is at hand," was the...

Although not written by Alexandre Dumas, D'Artagnan is a sequel to the his famous novel "The Three Musketeers" and continues the rollicking romantic romp through pre-revolutionary France by following the further pursuits of the famous musketeer D'Artagnan. Alexandre Dumas's most famous literary creation, d'Artagnan is loosely based on the life of Charles de Batz-Castelmore d'Artagnan and his adventures with the musketeer guards. Henry James O'Brien Bedford-Jones (1887-1949) was a prolific Canadian writer who published historical, science fiction, crime, and Western fiction. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing this antiquarian book in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition.

Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: “The Three Musketeers + Twenty Years After + The Vicomte of Bragelonne + Ten Years Later + Louise de la Valliere + The Man in the Iron Mask (The Complete d'Artagnan Romances)” is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. The d'Artagnan Romances are a set of three novels by Alexandre Dumas telling the story of the musketeer d'Artagnan from his humble beginnings in Gascony to his death as a marshal of France in the Siege of Maastricht in 1673. Dumas based the life and character of d'Artagnan on the 17th-century captain of musketeers Charles de Batz-Castelmore, Comte d'Artagnan, and Dumas's portrayal was indebted to the semi-fictionalized memoirs of d'Artagnan written 27 years after the hero's death by Gatien de Courtilz de Sandras (published in 1700). The d'Artagnan novels are: The Three Musketeers, set in 1625; first published in serial form in the magazine Le Siècle between March and July 1844. Dumas claimed it was based on manuscripts he had discovered in the Bibliothèque Nationale. Twenty Years After, set in 1648; serialized from January to August, 1845. The Vicomte of Bragelonne: Ten Years Later, set between 1660 and 1673; serialized from October 1847 to January 1850. This vast novel has been split into three, four, or five volumes at various points. In the three-volume edition, the novels are titled The Vicomte de Bragelonne, Louise de la Vallière and The Man in the Iron Mask. In the four-volume edition, the novels are titled The Vicomte de Bragelonne, Ten Years Later, Louise de la Vallière and The Man in the Iron Mask Alexandre Dumas (1802 – 1870), also known as Alexandre Dumas, père, was a French writer, best known for his historical novels of high adventure. Translated into nearly 100 languages, these have made him one of the most widely read French authors in history. Many of his novels, including The Count of Monte Cristo,The Three Musketeers, Twenty Years After, and The Vicomte de Bragelonne: Ten Years Later were originally published as serials. His novels have been adapted since the early twentieth century for nearly 200 films. Dumas' last novel, The Knight of Sainte-Hermine, unfinished at his death, was completed by a scholar and published in 2005, becoming a bestseller. It was published in English in 2008 as The Last Cavalier. Prolific in several genres, Dumas began his career by writing plays, which were successfully produced from the first. He also wrote numerous magazine articles and travel books; his published works totaled 100,000 pages. In the 1840s, Dumas founded the Théâtre Historique in Paris.
