Book excerpt: This 2002 Article IV Consultations highlights that following a period of inaction on the structural front and a protracted recession, economic growth in the Czech Republic has picked up. Underlying this performance have been supportive macroeconomic policies, large foreign direct investment, and steady progress with structural reform. However, enterprise restructuring has led to rising structural unemployment and large regional disparities in unemployment rates. Sizable losses were accumulated by banks, which had to be transferred to the government to allow the banks to be sold to strategic investors, adding to medium-term fiscal pressures.

This book was released on 2005-08-09 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2005 Article IV Consultation highlights that recent accession to the European Union and gains in growth performance reinforced the Czech Republic’s position as one of the most open and developed economies among the new member states. Thanks to substantial foreign direct investment, its manufacturing sector is closely integrated into cross-border production networks, and foreign-owned firms now account for most of industrial exports. Banking sector indicators are positive, and bank lending—led by credit to households—continue to rebound. Past restructuring and improved risk management have also strengthened banks.

Book excerpt: Growth slowed considerably following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, reflecting disruptions in global value chains, significant increases in energy and commodity prices, an erosion in real wages, and a necessary tightening in monetary policy. Growth is expected to pick up in 2024, led by consumption and fixed investment—as inflation fades and real income recovers—supported by net exports. Nevertheless, over the medium term, GDP is not expected to reach the levels consistent with its pre-pandemic trend. Inflation peaked in 2022 and is projected to meet its target by early 2025. Risks are tilted to the downside for activity and to the upside for inflation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2002 Article IV Consultation highlights that after two years of subdued domestic activity, strong private domestic demand and expansionary fiscal policy in the Slovak Republic buoyed economic growth, which recovered to over 3 percent in 2001. Increased profitability, enterprise restructuring, and reduced corporate income tax boosted fixed investment. Rising real wages and employment, personal income tax reduction, and the redemption of National Property Fund bonds underpinned vigorous growth in private consumption. The general government deficit widened by a half percentage point of GDP to 4 percent of GDP in 2001.

  • Publisher : International Monetary Fund
  • Release : 2013-08-02
  • ISBN : 1484371593

Download or read book Czech Republic written by International Monetary Fund. European Dept. and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2013-08-02 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2013 Article IV Consultation highlights that the Czech economy, despite its strong fundamentals, is in the midst of a prolonged recession because of the euro area slump and weak domestic demand. A further slowdown in the euro area would exacerbate the situation, creating the risk of lower growth in the long run. Short-term macroeconomic policies should therefore be geared toward supporting the economy and not creating additional drag. Boosting potential growth in the medium to long term will require implementation of additional structural reforms. Given the large fiscal consolidation achieved so far, further consolidation efforts should be avoided until the economic recovery gains strength.

Book Republic of Estonia

Download or read book Republic of Estonia written by International Monetary Fund and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2002-07-03 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2002 Article IV Consultation highlights that Estonia continues to be an outstanding performer among the transition economies reflecting the authorities’ continued commitment to market-based reforms, pursuit of sound macroeconomic policies, emphasis on institution building, and a commitment to transparency. In 2001, the Estonian economy showed remarkable resilience given the slowdown in economic activity among its main trading partners. Although growth decelerated somewhat compared with the previous year, the economy grew at a healthy 5.4 percent, driven largely by a pickup in investment demand.
