Book Value Above Cost

Download or read book Value Above Cost written by Donald E. Sexton and published by Pearson Prentice Hall. This book was released on 2009-03-12 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book systematically explains how to maximize shareholder value. Columbia University's Don Sexton fully identifies the real drivers of shareholder value, unifying key concepts from marketing, branding, economics, management, finance, accounting, and statistics. Sexton introduces a powerful new metric: Customer Value Added (CVA), the difference between customer-perceived value and variable cost per unit. Next, he demonstrates CVA at work, presents research and case studies that prove its value, and shows how to use it to consistently measure, manage, and optimize profit, cash flow, and shareholder value. Readers will learn why CVA works; how to measure it; how changes in CVA correlate to changes in profits and cash flow; and how to use CVA to steer the enterprise. Along the way, Sexton illuminates CVA's key implications for managers, including why managers must focus attention simultaneously on both customers and costs, and why well-publicized "generic strategies" such as "net recommend" offer only part of the solution. Finally, drawing on his own extensive experience consulting on CVA and related issues, Sexton presents easy-to-use worksheets for translating CVA concepts into reality in your own organization.

  • Pages : 170 pages

Download or read book Speechless written by Jennifer Gordon and published by Jennifer Gordon. This book was released on 2011 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the age of 43, Jennifer Gordon suffered a debilitating stroke that robbed her of the power of speech. What was it like for an intelligent, articulate, imaginative woman to find herself in a world where she could no longer communicate? Speechless tells this story. It describes the often puzzling symptoms leading to the stroke; the shock, then denial, then acceptance of the stroke itself; the periods of hostitalisation and rehabilitation and the long journey back to a 'normal' life. The author experiences despair at being dependent on others; resentment at being judged because she is different; frustration at the need for intense concentration to do even simple things; grief as she becomes aware of a loss of personality; and joy at each small step towards regaining what she has lost. Speechless is written with dignity, honesty and humour in a way that evokes empathy but never pity. Anyone who has ever been a patient will feel they can relate in some small way to Jennifer Gordon's feelings of helplessness, anger, fear and gratitude as doctors, nurses, orderlies, therapists and hospital workers cross her path. Because of this, the book is enlightening reading for all health care professionals as well as relatives and friends and the patients themselves.

Book excerpt: Practical aspects of single- and doubled-random WWR models for CVA are reviewed. Discussing the single-random WWR model conditioning the exposure on the random default time and suggesting modifications which help a) isolate WWR effect from RWR, and b) specify expectations about WWR trends with changing default rate. Further, overviewing the general CVA dependence on the default rate via developing clarifying approximations and analyzing conditions when CVA declines with growing default rate. Demonstrating then that although technically double-random WWR can reduce CVA in that area, the needed parameters are long maturities combined with atypically high default rates so that the effect is rather of an academic than practical interest.
