Download or read book Cutting Off A Whale s Head written by K.C. Woodworth and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2013-11-19 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Recession doesn’t hit Cree Quinn: it bleeds him dry. His wildly successful business as an adult novelty items wholesaler runs aground. His investments in natural gas wells in Texas prove fruitless. Now that his savings, retirement, and credit cards—even his son’s college fund!—have been totally tapped out, Cree, the narrator and protagonist of Cutting Off A Whale’s Head, quickly realizes his old way of life is in jeopardy. The bank will foreclose on his house unless he can come up with a colossal sum of money, and fast! Lucky for Cree, an unlikely way out washes up against the Golden Gate Bridge: the decomposing carcass of an Orca whale. Cree knows his scheme is desperate, but, in his mind, he has no choice but to do whatever it takes to keep a roof above his family’s head—even if it means breaking the law! Fans of Sam Lipsyte and Arthur Nersesian will rejoice at Cutting Off A Whale’s Head for its deft prose style and characterization. All readers will delight in the humor and insight unique to author K. C. Woodworth as he takes us, and Cree, on a madcap dash through San Francisco and half a lifetime of memories along the way.

Book When Law Was in the Holster

Download or read book When Law Was in the Holster written by John Boessenecker and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2012-09-28 with total page 797 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the great lawmen of the Old West, Bob Paul (1830–1901) cast a giant shadow across the frontiers of California and Arizona Territory for nearly fifty years. Today he is remembered mainly for his friendship with Wyatt Earp and his involvement in the stirring events surrounding the famous 1881 gunfight near the OK Corral in Tombstone, Arizona. This long-overdue biography fills crucial gaps in Paul’s story and recounts a life of almost constant adventure. As told by veteran western historian John Boessenecker, this story is more than just a western shoot-’em-up, and it reveals Paul to be far more than a blood-and-thunder gunfighter. Beginning with Paul’s boyhood adventures as a whaler in the South Pacific, the author traces his journey to Gold Rush California, where he served respectively as constable, deputy sheriff, and sheriff in Calaveras County, and as Wells Fargo shotgun messenger and detective. Then, in the turbulent 1880s, Paul became sheriff of Pima County, Arizona, and a railroad detective for the Southern Pacific. In 1890 President Benjamin Harrison appointed him U.S. marshal of Arizona Territory. Transcending local history, Paul’s story provides an inside look into the rough-and-tumble world of frontier politics, electoral corruption, Mexican-U.S. relations, border security, vigilantism, and western justice. Moreover, issues that were important in Paul’s career—illegal immigration, smuggling on the Mexican border, youth gangs, racial discrimination, ethnic violence, and police-minority relations—are as relevant today as they were during his lifetime.

Book Arctic Alaska and Siberia Or Eight Months with the Arctic Whalemen

Download or read book Arctic Alaska and Siberia Or Eight Months with the Arctic Whalemen written by Herbert Lincoln Aldrich and published by . This book was released on 1889 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arctic Alaska and Siberia, or, Eight Months with the Arctic Whalemen is an account of the 1887 Arctic whaling season by journalist Herbert L. Aldrich (1860-1948). Between March and October of 1887, Aldrich spent time on eight New Bedford whaling vessels, documenting the whaling industry and the native peoples of Arctic Alaska. Aldrich was a young reporter for the New Bedford Evening Standard who resolved to accompany the Arctic whaling fleet after he was diagnosed with tuberculosis and told he had less than a year to live. He received the support of the leaders of New Bedford's whaling industry, who wanted him to document what they knew to be a dying industry. During his time in the Arctic, Aldrich took more than 700 photographs documenting all aspects of the whale hunt. Many of his photographs are now preserved in New Bedford Whaling Museum in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Upon his return to New Bedford, Aldrich lectured extensively on his experiences and published this book in 1889. The book includes illustrations and a map of the Arctic whaling grounds north of Alaska. Defying predictions of an early death, Aldrich lived into his late eighties. He went on to become managing editor of the Cleveland Plain Dealer and the Jacksonville Florida Citizen and in 1897 founded the Aldrich Publishing Company of New York.
