Book excerpt: Excerpt from Publications of Societies: A Provisional List of the Publications of American Scientific, Literary, and Other Societies; From Their Organization It has been impracticable in the present work to follow a consistently systematic method of entry. In the case of each society the endeavor has been to give its correct official name, as well as cross-references from other names and from names of localities, and to include the date of its organization, the name and address of itspresent secretary or other representative, and its place of headquarters. Entries as a rule are chronological; series, however, precede individual volumes. Special attention is called to the growing importance of the publications of universities and colleges, and in this field the information supplied by Harvard and Yale universities presents a model of systematized arrangement. It is to be regretted that the information from other universities having such departments could not have been conformed to these excellent models; this, however, was rendered impossible from the fact that the Harvard and Yale lists came after the less satisfactory form had been adopted for the other universities. In some cases, such as the American anti-slavery Society and the United States Sanitary Commission, little more has been possible than to point out sources of information from which it is hoped an adequate bibliography may be obtained later. In recording the publications of societies it has been extremely difficult to draw the line between publications by societies and publications concerning societies but not issued by them. There is also not a little confusion as to series which have been discontinued and resumed, or of which the title has from time to time been changed. In the case of several series it has not been possible to obtain individual entries for the earlier numbers, and in the ease of others the representatives of the societies have utterly failed to respond to requests for information as to issues later than those scheduled. The list was intended to bring the publications up to the date of July, 1898, and systematic entry has not been attempted later than that date. It is to be hoped that this volume will make clear the way for a revision or a later publication, completing the nineteenth century record. Such an issue will not, however, be possible unless the present volume receives support in the way of subscriptions from libraries and others interested, and cooperation from librarians and society officers in filling gaps. The publication has been a labor of love on the part of the editor, who does not expect to obtain from it the actual return for the money outlay, but does hope that the deficit may not be so great as to preclude further publication on these lines. It is not intended to include in the American Catalogue for 1895-1900 an appendix covering publishing societies, its place being filled for the most part by the present fist. Book excerpt: Excerpt from State Publications: A Provisional List of the Official Publications of the Several States of the United States Moreover, as the inquiry is extended back into the earlier historical periods, many documents are found which do much to complete the historical record of the nation or throw light on its development. In the present work, which can best be described as an attempt at an endeavor toward a check-list of State publications, the editor has undertaken to provide, so far as present resources permit, a key to the State publications of each State from its beginning, including in a supplemental division colonial or territorial issues or reprints of them. It has been an impossible task to make a complete bibliography, especially as in no State can there be found a complete set of the documents of the State itself. This preliminary endeavor has had, indeed, one useful effect in calling the attention of State Librarians and Historians to the gaps in their own collections and to the imperfections of their own records, and it is hoped that, on the completion of this work, librarians not only in the State Library of the State concerned, but in other libraries of the State and in libraries of other States, will make comparison of these records with their own collections or knowledge, and place their results at the service of their fellow-librarians. This will be a patriotic service to the State concerned, as well as a professional service to all libraries. The volume is so published, with column margins, as to invite such com plementary work in each library, as well as to permit additional entry, in the proper place, of new volumes of current series or new publications. In many cases local or historical libraries were found to have documents or information which the State Library altogether lacked, and the editor extends especial thanks to the libraries not State libraries which have thus cooperated. A serial is defined as any publication issued regularly or irregularly for an indefinite period. Any serial was considered current if it was not known to have ceased publication, and, if issues had been received since January 1947. All publicly available serials, Whether printed or processed, are included except dailies, forms, and United States Government publications intended primarily for administrative use. Each entry includes the title of the serial and the call number used in this Library. The place of publication, if given, comes between the title and the call number. The city has been given only when it was necessary to distinguish between two serials with the same title, and for publications of the United States Government issued outside Washington, D. C. The country is given for all serials published outside the United States unless the name of the country appears in English in the title.
