Book Current Concepts in Parenteral Nutrition

Download or read book Current Concepts in Parenteral Nutrition written by J.M. Greep and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: J. E. Fischer, M.D. Professor Greep, ladies and gentlemen. It is a great pleasure for me and the participants to be present at this International Meeting of Parenteral Nutri tion. This meeting would not have been possible five years ago. At that time we were still arguing about central vs. peripheral routes, efficacy of the tech nique, and still getting accustomed to our ability to support patients nutri tionally. Within the last five years these discussions, which seem almost futile in retrospect, have been put aside. Both techniques, we know how, work quite well and have their own indications. Having become comfortable with the technique, it is now time to enter the second phase of parenteral nutrition, and that is the differentiation of the technique for the benefit of different patients. Over the next two days we will be discussing several problems which at the present time are central to the entire subject of parenteral nutrition. Is a fat calorie the same as a carbo hydrate calorie? What is the effect on protein metabolism of the fat calorie as opposed to the carbohydrate calorie? Are they equivalent? Are'there situations in which one is superior to the other? Perhaps we will find out tomorrow in the panel.

Book Current Concepts in Neonatal Nutrition an Issue of Clinics in Perinatology

Download or read book Current Concepts in Neonatal Nutrition an Issue of Clinics in Perinatology written by Brenda Poindexter and published by . This book was released on 2014-06-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past several decades, advances in neonatal nutrition have focused on the provision of early parenteral nutrition and the development of formulas and supplements that most closely approximate maternal breast milk. The overall outcomes for infants, including premature infants, have greatly benefited from these advances, but there are still many nutritional unknowns that impact the lives of neonates. This is an exciting time in neonatal nutrition as the focus has shifted from survival and growth, which are still important goals, to effects of each micro/macronutrient on development, prevention of disease states such as ROP, the effects of neonatal nutrition on future health as an adult, and opportunities to improve long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes by optimal early nutrition. This issue focuses on aspects of enteral and parenteral nutrition that are at the forefront of neonatal care: assessing growth, parenteral nutrition components (including alternate lipid formulations), optimal storage and use of human milk (including donor milk), post-discharge nutrition, and the effects of various micro/macronutrients on long-term developmental outcomes. It is anticipated that the study and implementation of many of these novel concepts into the care of neonates, many of whom are severely premature, will be of value to practitioners, researchers, and, most of all, patients.

Book The Role of Nutrition in Maintaining Health in the Nation s Elderly

Download or read book The Role of Nutrition in Maintaining Health in the Nation s Elderly written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-06-09 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malnutrition and obesity are both common among Americans over age 65. There are also a host of other medical conditions from which older people and other Medicare beneficiaries suffer that could be improved with appropriate nutritional intervention. Despite that, access to a nutrition professional is very limited. Do nutrition services benefit older people in terms of morbidity, mortality, or quality of life? Which health professionals are best qualified to provide such services? What would be the cost to Medicare of such services? Would the cost be offset by reduced illness in this population? This book addresses these questions, provides recommendations for nutrition services for the elderly, and considers how the coverage policy should be approached and practiced. The book discusses the role of nutrition therapy in the management of a number of diseases. It also examines what the elderly receive in the way of nutrition services along the continuum of care settings and addresses the areas of expertise needed by health professionals to provide appropriate nutrition services and therapy.

Book Nutrition and Gastroenterology

Download or read book Nutrition and Gastroenterology written by Myron Winick and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1980 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The latest research on the interrelationships of nutrition and gastrointestinal function is presented for physicians and nutritionists, as a reference in specific areas and a general framework for those responsible for patient care. The first section deals with the structure of the intestinal tract and the absorption of nutrients, especially fat, carbohydrate, protein, and minerals. The present status of nutrition knowledge is described, and the gaps therein are identified. Part 2 provides detailed consideration of the causes, interactions, effects, and treatment of nutrient malabsorption, including discussions of surgical procedures and such diseases as colitis, ulcers, and alcoholism. The final part discusses the influences of early nutrition and malnutrition on gastrointestinal function, such as enzyme activity, cellular turnover, and immune respones.

A series of chapters specifically address important strategies in the nutritional, pharmacological, and surgical treatment of intestinal failure as well as the concept of intestinal rehabilitation. Finally, two significant emerging developments are considered: regenerative medicine and distraction enterogenesis. The authors are internationally recognized experts from Europe and North America who are ideally placed to describe current knowledge and progress in the field.

Book Advances in Clinical Nutrition

Download or read book Advances in Clinical Nutrition written by I.D.A. Johnston and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advent of any new and effective therapy is soon followed by large numbers of publications in which the indications and benefits are explored critically. It is not unexpected, therefore, that within five years of the first Bermuda Symposium on advances in parenteral nutrition that a second Symposium was considered appropriate to review progress and explore new areas of investigation, as well as enlarging the scope of the meeting to include enteral nutrition. The rate of progress can be judged by the number of subjects which were not discussed at the first Symposium. For example, home parenteral nutrition, computer assisted assessment and prescribing, Studies of body protein synthesis and breakdown and the role of branched-chain amino acids are all new subjects for this Symposium which were not covered at all in the first meeting. Much progress has also been made to our understanding of the biochemi cal complications of parenteral nutrition and the problems related to long term access to the circulation. Nutritional care has become safer and more effective. There is an increasing awareness of the difficulties in making a true nutritional assessment in selecting patients for total parenteral nutrition and more attention has also been focussed on different approaches to enteral support in the management of undernourished patients. There is also continuing debate on the cost effectiveness of this expensive method of treatment and critics look in vain for evidence of efficacy based on controlled trials in specific groups of patients.

Book Total Parenteral Nutrition in the Hospital and at Home

Download or read book Total Parenteral Nutrition in the Hospital and at Home written by Khursheed N. Jeejeebhoy and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-05-04 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is therefore obvious that good patient management necessitates the use of an alternative route of nutritional support in patients unable to eat or absorb an oral diet. This alternative is parenteral nutrition, which is the subject of this book. While there are many texts on the subject of parenteral nutrition, very few if any are directed to the practical details of organizing the delivery of parenteral nutrition from a multidisciplinary point of view. In this publication we present the practice of parenteral nutrition as viewed by a team of a physician, nurse, and pharmacist.
