Book American Indian and Alaskan Native Traditional Health Practices

Download or read book American Indian and Alaskan Native Traditional Health Practices written by Larry Murillo and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Few studies have examined specific traditional health practices (THP) used in American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) health programs. THP is the practice of medicine people and the AI/AN community through the use of cultural values, practices and knowledge. The purpose of this AI/AN THP research is to raise consideration of culture-based intervention as a legitimate option and examine how cultural health beliefs and practices are being used to reduce the health disparity of AI/AN communities. A multi-site case study design using qualitative data was employed at three AI/AN sites: Native American Health Center (Oakland, California); United Indian Health Service (Arcata, California); and the Natsoo-Gah-Nee Clinic and Tribal Health Program (Fort Hall, Idaho). Two weeks of participant observation (240 total hours) and four 45-60 minute interviews (12 total) were used to collect data. The data analysis revealed three themes: cultural connection, identity--being Indian, and interaction between western medicine and THP. Cultural connection was a primary component of intervention for AI/AN people who received alcohol treatment. The AI/AN health clinic has become a place of contact to reestablish identity and connection to those health practices that are specific to AI/AN cultures. Results from the data collection illuminated several key issues. THP is housed in the mental health and health promotion programs of an AI/AN clinic because they are more flexible and supportive of cultural activities. Each case site used medicine people who did not originate from the local community. Sharing cultural information is a sensitive issue and can create role confusion about who is responsible for teaching culture--the health agency, staff, or the local community. The medical clinic is limited in utilizing THP because medical providers do not have enough information about AI/AN THP, who practices it, and how to refer patients. The discussion focuses on AI/AN THP as a viable health intervention alternative. The use of THP has initiated an interactive role of cultural connection for the AI/AN health agency, the medicine people and the local community. A community-based process for developing a THP program is identified for creating or expanding an AI/AN traditional health program"--Page 1-2.

  • Author : Niraj Kumar
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media

Download or read book Biogeogens and Human Health written by Niraj Kumar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Health of the people is the most important indicator of the development of a nation. Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity (as defined by WHO). The state of health of an individual or population depends upon complex interaction of the physical, biological, political and social domains. The environment affects the human health in a big way. People tend to be most susceptible to illness when physically or mentally stressed. Stress, energy and immunity form a closely knit network. Through his experimental findings, the author has brought out this intricate concept of interdependence of biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) factors in an ecosystem, resulting in an impact on human health, in an explicitly marvelous manner. As a result, a new word “Biogeogens” has been coined, “bio” for living (biotic) , “geo” for non-living (abiotic/geographical/climatic/environment) and “gens” for the interactive proceeds of the two. The content included herein is directly concerned with the societal health and gives a clue to many socio-psycho health problems presently not handled with care. It also defines a multidimensional approach for dealing with many psychosomatic and health problems.

Book Ethnomedicinal Matrix

Download or read book Ethnomedicinal Matrix written by Pulucheru Vishnu Dev and published by Educreation Publishing. This book was released on with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While examining the relationship between health, culture and medicine in post-colonial India, the dominant perspective in sociological and anthropological literature conceptualizes medicine and culture as autonomous domains and views the relationship between the two in oppositional terms where culture (lay persons' beliefs and practices) is seen largely as impeding the progress of biomedicine (allopathic, modern medicine). In this conceptual scheme, all medical knowledge systems other than biomedicine is denied any valid medical status, clubbed as culture devoid of any cognitive content, and is seen as coterminous with religion and superstition. This perspective largely ignores the ground reality of the existence of ethno-medicine among Tribal communities. Tribal contributed tremendously to the development of indigenous medical systems in India. However, their contributions have not been documented and studied properly. This book makes a modest attempt to bridge this gap and offers a platform for debate and discussion towards safeguarding and development of Tribal medicine in India.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Loustaunau and Sobo demonstrate the ways in which cultural and social factors shape medicine and health care. After a discussion of culture, the social structure and the impact of poverty, class, gender, and family patterns on health, illness and care-seeking, they explain the similarities and differences of medical systems cross-culturally.
