Book excerpt: Crushed Hopes and Hopeful Beginnings: a Roman-era adventure with dangerous choices, unlikely friendships, and world views in conflict. Can God work all things for good if you don't even think he's real? Lusario was content in Cyrene as part of the Philandros household. After he returns from serving the youngest son, Diokles, while he studies in Alexandria, Lusario expects to become a paid tutor for his master, earning the money to buy his freedom. But when Diokles uses him to pay a gambling debt, he must go to Carthago as the slave of a man who hates him. His once-bright future is gone forever. So why does his Christian friend Timon insist things will turn out so much better than he expects? But Carthago brings new people, like Caelus Martinus, and new possibilities into Lusario's hopeless world. Could Timon be right? When Lusario sees a chance to escape his fate, will going for it give him a future again, or only hasten his death? Crushed Hopes and Hopeful Beginnings is a short novel about the turbulent lives of Lusario and his friends three years before Carol Ashby's next full-length novel, River of Life, when two of them embark on a journey up the Nile that changes everything. "This is a fabulous ancient-world series of novels that follow the lives of fictional early Christians. Carol is meticulous with her research and a true expert on Ancient Rome! History lovers and those who enjoy my biblical books are going to LOVE this series!" -- Roseanna White, best-selling author and Christy Award winner. If you enjoy the Roman-era Biblical fiction of Tessa Afshar and Francine River's Mark of the Lion series, you'll love the stand-alone novels of the Light in the Empire series.

Book Howard Hughes Was Bob Hope in Make Up

Download or read book Howard Hughes Was Bob Hope in Make Up written by Joseph Polillo and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2019-06-23 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I always knew Howard Hughes was Bob Hope in makeup. I knew who Bob Hope was since the ’70s. I began gathering facts and proofs to prove beyond reasonable doubt that I knew what I was talking about! I wrote this book because I was tired of telling my theory to just one or two people at a time. Howard Hughes was Bob Hope in makeup, and he told you so in his TV skits, in his movies, and in his books. The life of Bob Hope was a cover story bought and paid for by the United States government—an alleged life. Howard Rupert Hughes Jr. was “Sonny” billionaire industrialist, oilman, movie producer, screenwriter, director, photographer, and inventor of satellites, lasers, ships, planes, jets, and rockets. Hope himself stated that he had a group of writers, and he was the one with two (2) heads. And most of all, he was a character actor in his own movies from his own studios. I have in my possession a magazine ad with Hope lying in bed, and the header above his picture read: “Two of the most famous names in America sleep together.” My theory is, Howard Hughes disappeared, went underground, and reappeared in makeup as Bob Hope in an “alleged life,” wearing a mask. Howard Hughes was talking behind his Bob Hope face. Here’s a quote from Hope: “I do my best impersonations right in front of the people, and they don’t get it. They don’t listen.” Hope stated “my names” would go down in history. Another quote from Hope stated, “My sixty years with NBC proves Lincoln was wrong. You can fool all the people all the time.” He did!

Book excerpt: Can the deepest loss bring the greatest gain? Rome's conquering army took Ariana's family and freedom, but nothing can take her faith in Jesus. When she rescues a tribune's wife from certain death, her reward is freedom and a chance to free her brother and sister. But first she must catch up with the slave caravan before they vanish forever, and tracking them from Dacia to the coast seems impossible for one woman alone. Discharged from the legion with a hand crippled by a Dacian knife, Donatus faces a future without hope. When the tribune asks him to escort Ariana on her quest, it's the only work he can find. It means four weeks with a Dacian woman and a gladiator bodyguard, but it takes money to eat. A man without options must take what he can get. But a lot can happen in four weeks. Even battle-hardened men can be touched by love and forgiveness, and it's easier to face an enemy with a sword than to face the truth. When his moment of truth comes, what will Donatus choose, and what will that mean for all of them? Dangerous times, difficult friendships, lives transformed by forgiveness and love The Light in the Empire series follows the interconnected lives of four Roman families during the reigns of Trajan and Hadrian. Each can be read stand-alone. The nine novels of the series will take you around the Empire, from Germania and Britannia to Thracia, Dacia, and Judaea and, of course, to Rome itself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before his death in 1870, Robert E. Lee penned a letter to Col. Charles Marshall in which he argued that we must cast our eyes backward in times of turmoil and change, concluding that “it is history that teaches us to hope.” Charles Pierce Roland, one of the nation’s most distinguished and respected historians, has done exactly that, devoting his career to examining the South’s tumultuous path in the years preceding and following the Civil War. History Teaches Us to Hope: Reflections on the Civil War and Southern History is an unprecedented compilation of works by the man the volume editor John David Smith calls a “dogged researcher, gifted stylist, and keen interpreter of historical questions.”Throughout his career, Roland has published groundbreaking books, including The Confederacy (1960), The Improbable Era: The South since World War II (1976), and An American Iliad: The Story of the Civil War (1991). In addition, he has garnered acclaim for two biographical studies of Civil War leaders: Albert Sidney Johnston (1964), a life of the top field general in the Confederate army, and Reflections on Lee (1995), a revisionist assessment of a great but frequently misunderstood general. The first section of History Teaches Us to Hope, “The Man, The Soldier, The Historian,” offers personal reflections by Roland and features his famous “GI Charlie” speech, “A Citizen Soldier Recalls World War II.” Civil War–related writings appear in the following two sections, which include Roland’s theories on the true causes of the war and four previously unpublished articles on Civil War leadership. The final section brings together Roland’s writings on the evolution of southern history and identity, outlining his views on the persistence of a distinct southern culture and his belief in its durability. History Teaches Us to Hope is essential reading for those who desire a complete understanding of the Civil War and southern history. It offers a fascinating portrait of an extraordinary historian.

Book Shattered Hopes

Download or read book Shattered Hopes written by Josh Ruebner and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2014-10-07 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: President Barack Obama’s first trip abroad in his second term took him to Israel and the Palestinian West Bank, where he despondently admitted to those waiting for words of encouragement, “It is a hard slog to work through all of these issues.” Contrast this gloomy assessment with Obama’s optimism on the second day of his first term, when he appointed former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell as his special envoy for Middle East peace, boldly asserting that his administration would “actively and aggressively seek a lasting peace between Israel and the Palestinians.” How is it that Obama’s active and aggressive search for progress has become mired in the status quo? Writer and political analyst Josh Ruebner charts Obama’s journey from optimism to frustration in the first hard-hitting investigation into why the president failed to make any progress on this critical issue, and how his unwillingness to challenge the Israel lobby has shattered hopes for peace. Written in a clear and accessible style by the advocacy director of a national peace organization and former Middle East analyst for the Congressional Research Service, Shattered Hopes offers an informed history of the Obama administration’s policies and maps out a true path forward for the United States to help achieve Israeli-Palestinian peace.
