The author argues that this model emerged through the fusion of market Leninism and global capitalism in the early 1990s within the post-Cold War and post-Communist global context. While driving robust export-led growth, this approach hindered China's structural transformation and limited its ascent, ironically leading to the regime's accelerating totalitarian turn and the onset of a new Cold War. In line with the call for ‘Capitalism 3.0,’ the book advocates Western decoupling from China and promoting the country's transition to a democratic developmental state, fostering a safer world for democracy over autocracy. The first myth is that globalization led directly to China’s rise; the second is that China is another East Asian developmental state; the third that China’s market reform had been implemented in an incremental way; and fourth that China’s ‘resilient authoritarianism’ has been effective in ensuring the country’s economic and political transformation. Yue argues that the China model is one of ‘crony comprador capitalism’ that has hindered the country’s attempts at economic and political modernity. It is argued that the United States’ strategy of integrating China into the international system is self-defeating in the long run; not because such an approach has created a 'restless empire' capable of challenging US primacy, but because the Chinese 'miracle' has subsequently backfired on the liberal order created after World War Two. Covering the entire reform period from the end of the Cultural Revolution in 1976 to the present day, the author calls for readers to rethink globalization and leave more policy space for China and the developing nations to pursue national development through internal integration, which is more conducive to democratic transition and global peace.

In reality, the short-lived governance arrangements which followed the January 2011 popular revolt in Egypt, for example, were little more than extensions of the authoritarian governance system the revolt set out to overthrow. There were differences, of course, between the three short-lived regimes that took power since then, but in form, rather than substance. This book uses a structuralist political economy framework rather than a detailed historical account as it considers how the ALT may prove to be an historic opportunity for human renaissance in the Arab World – or alternatively a disaster of epic proportions.

Book excerpt: This study of India's political economy provides a thorough examination of one critique of globalization, that it causes economic segmentation, and possibly disintegration, of the national economy as some sectors benefit and others are left behind. Economic segmentation is the breaking up of national markets, resulting in distinct winners and losers. Nayar's examination challenges this critique by demonstrating that, on balance, the active role of the Indian state in the areas of economic planning, fiscal federalism, and tax reform has resulted in improved economic integration, not increased segmentation. Similarly, his investigation of trade, investment, entrepreneurship, and migration, all reveal tendencies inherent in the market in favor of economic integration, especially when assisted by the state. Nayar's findings lead to the conclusion that while globalization both offers benefits (greater economic growth) and involves costs (external shocks), India's experience since its opening in 1991 suggests that India has benefited from, more than been victimized, by globalization.
