Book A History of Horrors

Download or read book A History of Horrors written by Denis Meikle and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revised and updated edition of A History of Horrors traces the life and 'spirit' of Hammer, from its fledgling days in the late 1940s through its successes of the 1950s and '60s to its decline and eventual liquidation in the late 1970s. With the exclusive participation of all of the personnel who were key to Hammer's success, Denis Meikle paints a vivid and fascinating picture of the rise and fall of a film empire, offering new and revealing insights into 'the truth behind the legend.' Much has been written about Hammer's films, but this is the only book to tell the story of the company itself from the perspective of those who ran it in its heyday and who helped to turn it into a universal byword for terror on the screen.

Book Hammer Horror The Movie Fans Have Their Say 1

Download or read book Hammer Horror The Movie Fans Have Their Say 1 written by Ian Carroll and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-10-03 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For me, the Hammer films were some of the first ever horror films that I ever got to watch - coupled with the Universal 'monster movies' on BBC2, usually on Saturday late-night double bills. They were much more than just films, they were the beginning of a life long adoration of all things Hammer - the movies, the music, the clothing, the collectables - all were things of great joy for me, from being a child right up until now. We found a newsagent who was willing to sell the 'goriest' magazine on his shelves to myself and my friend - two children at the local Primary School. My parents were surprisingly ok about it, especially my mother who was a massive horror movie fan and so she saw it as the norm, which was lucky for me. So the magazines were folded out - after I read them from cover to cover - and the posters were displayed on my bedroom walls; I can recall having Christopher Lee as 'Dracula' and 'Vampire Circus' up on my walls at the time, in the mid '70s. So, with the start of the Horror Double Bills on BBC2, I got to lap up two films every week on a Saturday night, from the Universal Classic Monster Movies to timeless horror gems to my favourites of all, the Hammer Horror Films. I watched each double bill - with my parents - every time they were on, usually with a cup of hot chocolate made by my father; the season would go on for a few months and then sadly come to an end, returning again later in the year. Due to no video recorders way back then, we watched the films and that was it, until I had the idea of recording the full films soundtrack on my cassette player - which usually fitted perfectly on a C90 cassette - and then listening to them again and again, trying to remember the visuals that went with them. The one that I recollect listening to the most was the tape that I did of 'Vampire Circus', which is probably why it has remained my favourite Hammer film to this day - having recently purchased it on Blu-Ray from France. Years later, with the introduction of VHS Video Recorders, our family joined the 'space age' and I was able to record and watch the Hammer films whenever I wanted to, usually later in the evening when most of the programmes that my family wanted to watch had finished. Then with the beginning of the DVD age, I started to replace all of the films that I had purchased or recorded on VHS cassettes, with shiny new DVD's - I was over the moon. I then purchased a DVD recorder and recorded the films direct from the TV - the ones that I couldn't find to purchase on original DVD's. Finally we came to where we are now with the start of the Blu-Ray generation and I began to replace the DVD Hammer Films with the newer and much shinier Blu-Ray format. The Blu-Ray's all tended to come with many extras - documentaries, trailers, interviews, commentaries and stills galleries - it was now unbelievable, but greatly received!!! My fascination with Hammer continues, buying films, t-shirts, bags, books and autographs. I have also met several of the stars at film and collectors fairs including - Caroline Munro, Dave Prowse and the late Francis Matthews. So, we finally come to this book, which you are reading right now. It's been a true labour of love and I have really enjoyed getting acquainted with other like minded fans, who have all been very positive about the book and are looking forward to it's release - there have though been only a couple that have been negative about it and if you're reading this you know who you are, but if you are actually reading this, thanks to you too! This is only Book #1 in a new series of 'Movie Review Books', with other favourites of mine to follow over the coming years, hope you like them as much as I do and find them very educational if you are new to the joys of all things Hammer!!! Thanks and keep watching Hammer films!!!

Book 50 Years of Hammer Horror

Download or read book 50 Years of Hammer Horror written by John L. Flynn and published by . This book was released on 2006-10 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 50 Years of Hammer Horror by John L. Flynn, Ph.D. is the follow-up book to his popular 75 Years of Universal Monsters. Hammer Film Productions was the most successful independent film company in the world. Between 1935 and 1983, the company produced more than 250 motion pictures and television shows, and their signature productions headlined theater marquees all around the globe. Those productions included thrillers, comedies, historical dramas, and science fiction. The company was best known for its series of gothic horror films, now termed Hammer Horror, that were produced from the late Fifties to the middle Seventies. During those nineteen years, from 1957 to 1976, Hammer Films reigned supreme as the world's premier producer of horror movies, enjoying worldwide financial success and creative freedom. Chief among its box office successes were new incarnations of Frankenstein, Dracula, the Mummy, the Werewolf, the Phantom of the Opera, and many others. In fact, Hammer emerged as the successor to Universal Pictures' horror film legacy. Virtually, every creature-feature Universal had filmed in black-and-white monochrome, Hammer remade in glorious Eastman Technicolor. This book is a celebration of the small independent studio that changed the look of horror films forever.

Book excerpt: In this book the author takes a fresh look at horror film series as series and presents an understanding of how the genre thrived in this format for a large portion of its history. It sheds light on older films such as the Universal and the Hammer series films on Dracula, Frankenstein and the Mummy as well as putting more recent series into perspective, such as The Nightmare on Elm Street films. Book The Spectacle of Isolation in Horror Films

Download or read book The Spectacle of Isolation in Horror Films written by Carl Royer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Go behind the scenes with an insightful look at horror films--and the directors who create them The Spectacle of Isolation in Horror Films: Dark Parades examines the work of several of the genre's most influential directors and investigates how traditional themes of isolation, alienation, death, and transformation have helped build the foundation of horror cinema. Authors Carl and Diana Royer examine the techniques used by Alfred Hitchcock that place his work squarely in the horror (rather than suspense) genre, discuss avant-garde cinema's contributions to mainstream horror, explore films that use the apartment setting as the "cell of horror," and analyze how angels and aliens function as the supernatural "Other." A unique resource for film students and film buffs alike, the book also examines Sam Raimi's Evil Dead trilogy and the fusion of science, technology, and quasi-religious themes in David Cronenberg's films. Instead of presenting a general overview of the horror genre or an analysis of a specific sub-genre, actor, or director, The Spectacle of Isolation in Horror Films offers an imaginative look at classic and contemporary horror cinema. The book examines Surrealist films such as Un Chien Andalou and Freaks, the connections among the concepts of voyeurism, paranoia, and alienation in films like Rear Window, Rosemary's Baby, Blue Velvet, and The Blair Witch Project; the use of otherworldly creatures in films such as The Prophecy, Dogma, and The Day The Earth Stood Still; and the films of directors George Romero, John Waters, and Darren Aronofsky, to name just a few. This unique book also includes an extensive A-to-Z filmography and a bibliography of writings on, and about, horror cinema from filmmakers, film critics, and film historians. The Spectacle of Isolation in Horror Films examines: "Body Doubles and Severed Hands"--the common ancestry of avant-garde "art" films and exploitation horror B-movies "And I Brought You Nightmares"--recurring themes of psychological terror in Alfred Hitchcock's films "Horror, Humor, Poetry"--Sam Raimi's transformation of "drive-in" horror cinema "Atheism and 'The Death of Affect'"--David Cronenberg's obsessions, interests, and cautionary messages in films ranging from Videodrome to Dead Ringers to eXistenZ and much more! The Spectacle of Isolation in Horror Films: Dark Parades is a unique resource of critical analysis for academics working in film and popular culture, film historians, and anyone interested in horror cinema.

Book Terror and Everyday Life

Download or read book Terror and Everyday Life written by Jonathan Lake Crane and published by SAGE. This book was released on 1994-09-19 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does the horror in film relate to the horror we experience in everyday life? This is one of the questions addressed in this examination of the genre of horror film. The author argues that horror films today have broken with the tradition of the genre to embrace far more violent imagery, images that are in keeping with the escalating violence in society. By examining the horror film, its history and its current trends, the author hopes to further our understanding of the meaning of the genre in today's culture and our fascination with violence.
