Book Failure Modes in a Type 316 Stainless Steel Under Biaxial Strain Cycling

Download or read book Failure Modes in a Type 316 Stainless Steel Under Biaxial Strain Cycling written by DC. Davis and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discussed are the failure modes observed in a Type 316 stainless steel under biaxial high temperature low cycle fatigue (HTLCF) and creep-fatigue strain cycling. All tests were carried out in air at 621°C (1150°F) using thin-walled tubular type specimens specially designed for axial, torsional, and combined axial-torsional (biaxial) cyclic loadings. Results from HTLCF and creep-fatigue tests at six different biaxiality ratios (? = ??xy/??xx): 0.0, 1.0, 2.0, 2.5, 3.6, and ?, are given. At these biaxiality ratios, crack initiation in HTLCF is a shear process and crack propagation occurs mainly in a normal mode. With the introduction of creep through a combined in-phase tensile-torsional hold-time imposed on the biaxial HTLCF cycle, the direction of the crack propagation was found to be dominated by the axial creep-fatigue component. These results are compared with some multiaxial fatigue strain-based failure criteria.

Book Creep and Ageing Interactions in Biaxial Fatigue of Type 316 Stainless Steel

Download or read book Creep and Ageing Interactions in Biaxial Fatigue of Type 316 Stainless Steel written by FA. Kandil and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A high-strain, biaxial (tension/torsion) fatigue study has been conducted on Type 316 stainless steel at 550°C. The tests were under strain control, some with dwell periods up to 10 min at the positive strain peaks. The deformation and fracture behavior under these conditions revealed a strengthening effect due to the fast carbide precipitation which extended life in some cases. Also it is shown that the form of the multiaxial fatigue failure criterion, modes, and directions of cracking were functions of hold time. The multiaxial cyclic stress-strain curve is best described in terms of shear stress and strain components on the maximum shear plane for a given hold time.

Book Isothermal and Thermomechanical Fatigue of Type 316 Stainless Steel

Download or read book Isothermal and Thermomechanical Fatigue of Type 316 Stainless Steel written by SY. Zamrik and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discussed is the thermomechanical fatigue (TMF) life of Type 316 stainless steel under in-phase and out-of-phase cycling and a comparison with the isothermal fatigue case. The TMF tests were conducted in air over a temperature range of 399‡C (750‡F) to 621‡C (1150‡F) at several mechanical strain ranges: ??m = 0.4% through 1.0%. The isothermal fatigue data were from total strain range (??m = 0.35%, 0.5%, 0.68% and 1.0%) tests conducted at 621‡C (1150‡ F). The results show that in-phase TMF is the most damaging cycle for Type 316 stainless steel at the high strain range levels (??m > 0.7%), followed by isothermal fatigue cycling at 621‡C (1150‡F) and then out-of-phase TMF cycling. The out-of-phase TMF life curve was observed to cross over the isothermal fatigue life curve at ??m ? 0.6%, and the trend of the data indicate that the out-of-phase TMF life curve will cross over the in-phase TMF life curve at ??m

Book A Metallographic Study of Multiaxial Creep Fatigue Behavior in 316 Stainless Steel

Download or read book A Metallographic Study of Multiaxial Creep Fatigue Behavior in 316 Stainless Steel written by ER. de los Rios and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A metallographic examination of elevated temperature multiaxial fatigue specimens of 316 stainless steel was conducted to identify the type of damage and other microstructural changes that occurred during testing. The work hardening which takes place at the beginning of the test is associated with the development of either a cell or a maze dislocation structure. Two main factors contribute to the flow stress, that is, dislocation and carbide precipitation hardening. Dislocation hardening prevails, but precipitation hardening, which increases with testing time, becomes significant for long hold-time and low-strain range tests. Fatigue cracks are predominantly transgranular. However, intergranular cracks have been observed in hold-time specimens and are related to grain-boundary sliding and grain-boundary precipitation. The fatigue fracture is a three stage process, the initial stage (Stage I) is crystallographic, extending for one to three grains. The intermediate stage (Stage II) is dominated by striations, with the exception of some featureless facets in biaxial specimens. The final stage (Stage III) is a dimple type fracture (tension fracture), beginning at shorter crack lengths in the hold-time and high-strain range specimens. Striation spacing calculations give approximate life estimates in low-cycle fatigue.

Book Cumulative Creep Fatigue Damage Evolution in an Austenitic Stainless Steel

Download or read book Cumulative Creep Fatigue Damage Evolution in an Austenitic Stainless Steel written by MA. McGaw and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A model of cumulative creep-fatigue damage has been developed which is based on the use of damage curve equations to describe the evolution of creep-fatigue damage for four basic creep-fatigue cycle types. These cycle types correspond to the four fundamental cycles of the StrainRange Partitioning Life Prediction approach of Manson, Halford, and Hirschberg. A concept referred to as Damage Coupling is introduced to analytically account for the differences in the nature of the damage introduced by each cycle type. For application of this model, the cumulative creep-fatigue damage behavior of Type 316 stainless steel at 816°C has been experimentally established for the two-level loading cases involving fatigue and creep-fatigue, in various permutations. The tests were conducted such that the lower life (high strain) cycling was applied first, for a controlled number of cycles, and the higher life (lower strain) cycling was conducted at the second level, to failure. The proposed model correlated the majority of the observed cumulative creep-fatigue data.

Book Assessment of High Temperature Low Cycle Fatigue Life of Austenitic Stainless Steels by Using Intergranular Damage as a Correlating Parameter

Download or read book Assessment of High Temperature Low Cycle Fatigue Life of Austenitic Stainless Steels by Using Intergranular Damage as a Correlating Parameter written by C. Levaillant and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strain-controlled continuous fatigue and creep-fatigue experiments are reported for two types of 316 steel tested at 600°C (1112°F). It is shown that, although the continuous fatigue properties of the two materials are very similar, the one containing a controlled amount of nitrogen exhibits a better creep-fatigue resistance than the other alloy. Detailed measurements of intergranular damage made either on the fracture surfaces or in the bulk of creep-fatigue specimens indicate that the susceptibility of the materials to the effect of tensile hold times can be related to their propensity to intergranular cracking. A stress relaxation-propagation reduction factor per cycle correlation is proposed in order to account for the detrimental effect of tensile hold times on the fatigue life. This correlation relies upon experimental results on austenitic stainless steels published in the literature. It is shown that the proposed approach, derived largely from the quantitative measurement of intergranular damage, holds some promise for predictive purposes.

Book Cyclic plasticity modeling and multiaxial fatigue assessment for an austenitic steel

Download or read book Cyclic plasticity modeling and multiaxial fatigue assessment for an austenitic steel written by Jie Fang and published by Herbert Utz Verlag. This book was released on 2015-07-23 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present work aims at engineers and scientists in the field of computational mechanics of materials. The objective of this work is to develop a suitable constitutive law and apply it to study effects of cyclic loading and geometry on the fatigue assessment. Firstly, a systematical investigation on the mechanic behaviors of an austenitic stainless steel is carried out. Different multiaxial fatigue life prediction models are studied to assess fatigue damage. The Karim-Ohno kinematic hardening model is extended to incorporate more complex mechanical behaviors. The proposed constitutive model is implemented into FEM code ABAQUS. Finally a computational fatigue analysis methodology is proposed for performing life prediction of notched components based on elastic-plastic computation.

Book Continuous and Sequential Multiaxial Low Cycle Fatigue Damage in 316 Stainless Steel

Download or read book Continuous and Sequential Multiaxial Low Cycle Fatigue Damage in 316 Stainless Steel written by A. Pineau and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tension and torsion low-cycle fatigue tests were carried out on thin tubular specimens of 316 stainless steel, tested at both room temperature and 600°C. Two types of experiments were performed: (1) conventional continuous isothermal tests, and (2) isothermal sequential tests with different sequences of tension/compression and torsional loading. Most of these tests were carried out under air environment at the equivalent total strain amplitude of ??t/2 = ±0.80% in tension or ??t/2 = ±0.80 ?3% in torsion. Optical and scanning electron microscopy were used to analyze the failure modes, the orientation of microcracks and macrocracks which lead to failure, and crack density.
