Book Un Believing in Modern Society

Download or read book Un Believing in Modern Society written by Jörg Stolz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-23 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This landmark study in the sociology of religion sheds new light on the question of what has happened to religion and spirituality since the 1960s in modern societies. Exposing several analytical weaknesses of today's sociology of religion, (Un)Believing in Modern Society presents a new theory of religious-secular competition and a new typology of ways of being religious/secular. The authors draw on a specific European society (Switzerland) as their test case, using both quantitative and qualitative methodologies to show how the theory can be applied. Identifying four ways of being religious/secular in a modern society: 'institutional', 'alternative', 'distanced' and 'secular' they show how and why these forms have emerged as a result of religious-secular competition and describe in what ways all four forms are adapted to the current, individualized society.

Book The Republican Alternative

Download or read book The Republican Alternative written by André Holenstein and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Republican Alternative seeks to move beyond the mere notion of scholarly inquiry into the republic—the subject of recent rediscovery by political historians interested in Europe’s intellectual heritage—by investigating the practical similarities and differences between two early modern republics, as well as their self-images and interactions during the turbulent seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Among the world’s most economically successful societies, Switzerland and the Netherlands laid much of the foundation for their prosperity during the early modern period discussed here. This volume attempts to clarify the special character of these two countries as they developed, including issues of religious plurality, the republican form of government, and an increasingly commercially-driven agrarian society.

  • ISBN : 9780198295846
  • Pages : 272 pages

Download or read book Choice and Religion written by Steve Bruce and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1999 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Choice and Religion provides a detailed critique of 'rational choice' to demonstrate that industrialisation has secularised the western world and that diversity, far from making religion more popular by allowing individuals to maximize their returns, undermines it. The claim that competition promotes religion is refuted with evidence from a wide variety of western societies. Bruce also examines the Nordic countries and the ex-communist states of eastern Europe to explore the consequences of different sorts of state regulation, and to show that ethnicity is a more powerful determinate of religious change than market structures. Where religion matters, it is not because individuals are maximising their returns but because it defines group identity and is deeply implicated in social conflict."--BOOK JACKET.

  • Author : Giuseppe Giordan
  • Publisher : Springer

Download or read book Religious Pluralism written by Giuseppe Giordan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-08 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume illustrates both theoretically and empirically the differences between religious diversity and religious pluralism. It highlights how the factual situation of cultural and religious diversity may lead to individual, social and political choices of organized and recognized pluralism. In the process, both individual and collective identities are redefined, incessantly moving along the continuum that ranges from exclusion to inclusion. The book starts by first detailing general issues related to religious pluralism. It makes the case for keeping the empirical, the normative, the regulatory and the interactive dimensions of religious pluralism analytically distinct while recognizing that, in practice, they often overlap. It also underlines the importance of seeking connections between religious pluralism and other pluralisms. Next, the book explores how religious diversity can operate to contribute to legal pluralism and examines the different types of church-state relations: eradication, monopoly, oligopoly and pluralism. The second half of the book features case studies that provide a more specific look at the general issues, from ways to map and assess the religious diversity of a whole country to a comparison between Belgian-French views of religious and philosophical diversity, from religious pluralism in Italy to the shifting approach to ethnic and religious diversity in America, and from a sociological and historical perspective of religious plurality in Japan to an exploration of Brazilian religions, old and new. The transition from religious diversity to religious pluralism is one of the most important challenges that will reshape the role of religion in contemporary society. This book provides readers with insights that will help them better understand and interpret this unprecedented transition.

Book excerpt: Cahiers Parisiens/Parisian Notebooks publish selected papers drawn from the various advanced-level activities at the University of Chicago Center in Paris. In Volume Seven, scholars from across the continent consider Europe as a discourse made of the sediments of historical experience and utopian ideas. Attached to a geographical region with constantly shifting boundaries, the group considers EUtROPEs as the cultural codes that endow Europe with the many meanings that it has held for different actors at different times. Twenty historians, linguists, cultural scientists, musicologists, and scholars of philosophy, urban studies, and film studies who came together at the University of Chicago's Center in Paris discuss these tropes in different fields and consider whether the present can continue to bear the weight of the many ideas and legacies of Europe.
