Book Particles and Nuclei

    Book Details:
  • Author : Bogdan Povh
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2015-06-15
  • ISBN : 3662463210
  • Pages : 457 pages

Download or read book Particles and Nuclei written by Bogdan Povh and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This well-known introductory textbook gives a uniform presentation of nuclear and particle physics from an experimental point of view. The first part, Analysis, is devoted to disentangling the substructure of matter. This part shows that experiments designed to uncover the substructures of nuclei and nucleons have a similar conceptual basis, and lead to the present picture of all matter being constructed from a small number of elementary building blocks and a small number of fundamental interactions. The second part, Synthesis, shows how the elementary particles may be combined to build hadrons and nuclei. The fundamental interactions, which are responsible for the forces in all systems, become less and less evident in increasingly complex systems. Such systems are in fact dominated by many-body phenomena. A section on neutrino oscillations and one on nuclear matter at high temperatures bridge the field of "nuclear and particle physics" and "modem astrophysics and cosmology. The seventh revised and extended edition includes new material, in particular the experimental verification of the Higgs particle at the LHC, recent results in neutrino physics, the violation of CP-symmetry in the decay of neutral B-mesons, the experimental investigations of the nucleon's spin structure and outstanding results of the HERA experiments in deep-inelastic electron- and positron-proton scattering. The concise text is based on lectures held at the University of Heidelberg and includes numerous exercises with worked answers. It has been translated into several languages and has become a standard reference for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses.

  • Author : Philip J. Siemens
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 2018-03-08
  • ISBN : 0429962452

Download or read book Elements Of Nuclei written by Philip J. Siemens and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-03-08 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the present volume, Phillip J. Siemens, who has been a seminal contributor to our understanding of the nucleus as a many-body system, and his able collabourator, Aksel S. Jensen, introduce graduate students and colleagues in other fields to the basic concepts of nuclear physics in a way which connects clearly the methods of nuclear physics with those of condensed matter, atomic, and particle physics. Their book thus provides a lucid introduction to the key facts and concepts of nuclei, including many of the most recent developments, while emphasizing the similarities and the differences between the behaviour of nuclei, atoms, elementary particles, and condensed matter, It should thus prove useful, not only as a text for an introductory graduate course in nuclear physics, but as a reference book for all scientists interested in a unified picture of our understanding of physical phenomena associated with many-body systems.

Book Scattering Theory of Molecules Atoms and Nuclei

Download or read book Scattering Theory of Molecules Atoms and Nuclei written by Luiz Felipe Canto and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2013 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of the book is to give a coherent and comprehensive account of quantum scattering theory with applications to atomic, molecular and nuclear systems. The motivation for this is to supply the necessary theoretical tools to calculate scattering observables of these many-body systems. Concepts, which are seemingly different for the atomic/molecular scattering from those for nuclear systems, are shown to be the same once the physical units such as energy, length are diligently clarified. Many-body resonances excited in nuclear systems are the same as those in atomic systems and come under the name of Feshbach resonances. We clarify this. We also lean heavily on semi-classical methods to explain the physics of quantum scattering and especially the interference seen in the angle dependence of the cross section. Having in mind a wider readership, the book includes sections on scattering in two dimensions, which is of use in surface physics. Several problems are also included at the end of each of the chapters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear, Particle and Many Body Physics, Volume II, is the second of two volumes dedicated to the memory of physicist Amos de-Shalit. The contributions in this volume are a testament to the respect he earned as a physicist and of the warm and rich affection he commanded as a personal friend. The book contains 41 chapters and begins with a study on the renormalization of rational Lagrangians. Separate chapters cover the scattering of high energy protons by light nuclei; approximation of the dynamics of proton-neutron systems; the scattering amplitude for the Gaussian potential; Coulomb excitation of decaying states; the and optical potential for pions propagating in nuclear matter. Subsequent chapters deal with topics such as the elastic scattering of protons from analog resonances; internal Compton scattering in a muonic atom with an excited nucleus; and a formal theory of finite nuclear systems. The book also includes a eulogy and recollections of Amos de-Shalit.
