Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cotton Mills of South Carolina Five years ago The News and Courier detailed me to investigate and report on the conditions of the cotton mills in South Carolina. These observations were printed in the early part of 1903. Since that publication, 'five years ago, there have been momentous changes in the industrial and social world. The cotton mills of South Carolina have prospered as have the people of this great State. Again The News and Courier has asked me to visit and report upon the conditions of the cotton mills. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . 1907 edition.: ...hour and a half in which to play. At a mill such as Chiquola, where they make print cloths, the boys doff about four times a day and have the balance of the day in which to play. Most of the mills in this State are engoged in manufacturing this class of goods. At Monoghan 1 spent about an hour in a soda water establishment and talked to several of the boys there as to their doffing. They told me that they averaged about seventy-five cents a day, and the four boys with whom 1 talked "doffed" thirty-two frames, with two hundred iind twenty-four bobbins to the frame. It took them seventy-five minutes in which to change the spools and they ran for four hours; altogether they doffed three times a day and had the balance of the time for themselves. They reported for work at (i o'clock in the morning and got off a few minutes later. On No 27 yarns it took twenty-five minutes to doff, and the frames run in the neighborhood of four hours, !n that way giving the boys forty minutes out of every hour and ten minute.! in which to play. At Piedmont the warp was "doffed" every two hours, and it took thirty rainU.tes in which to "doff," and Ihe filling was "doffed" every fifty minutes, and half of the time being rest. But the same thing applies wherever there is a cotton mill, and it is needless to emphasize the fact that the mechanism of..he spinning department is such that it takes time for the bobbins to fill, and during that time thei'e is absolutely nothing for the "doffers" to do except to play. The beys engaged in "doffing," therefore, work only half of their time, and thsy easily earn seventy-five cents A day. if there is anything else in which they can engage that is lighter, or at which they can do better, it certainly has not been found in this State. At Pacolet 1 talked to. several boys, among them Bachelor Floyd and George Ladd, who were, engaged in "doffing." Floyd told me...

Book excerpt: Since its original publication in 1987, Like a Family has become a classic in the study of American labor history. Basing their research on a series of extraordinary interviews, letters, and articles from the trade press, the authors uncover the voices and experiences of workers in the Southern cotton mill industry during the 1920s and 1930s. Now with a new afterword, this edition stands as an invaluable contribution to American social history. "The genius of Like a Family lies in its effortless integration of the history of the family--particularly women--into the history of the cotton-mill world.--Ira Berlin, New York Times Book Review "Like a Family is history, folklore, and storytelling all rolled into one. It is a living, revelatory chronicle of life rarely observed by the academe. A powerhouse.--Studs Terkel "Here is labor history in intensely human terms. Neither great impersonal forces nor deadening statistics are allowed to get in the way of people. If students of the New South want both the dimensions and the feel of life and labor in the textile industry, this book will be immensely satisfying.--Choice

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rise of Cotton Mills in the South My purpose has been to describe the birth of the industry in the South rather than its development. In only a small number of instances has this plan been departed from; many topics rich in interest have not been broached. I regret that two books did not come into my hands in time to be used in this study. Holland Thompson's The New South, and George T. Winston's A Builder of the New South (the story of the life work of D. A. Tomp kins), are contributions which will be found valuable. Book Linthead

Download or read book Linthead written by Wilt Browning and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was never a term of endearment --linthead-- but some people whose lives were formed in the cotton mill villages of the South wore it as a badge of honor. One is Wilt Browning, part of the last generation to be born and raised on the mill hill. This book is a look at mill hill life from the 1940s through the early 50s, when the mills began selling off company houses and life on the mill hills began changing rapidly. Linthead is a revisiting of the life that thousands of Carolinians and other Southerners once lived, a life that exists now only in memories. Browning brings those memories to life.
