Book excerpt: Excerpt from Costs and Economies of Scale in Egg-Type Chick Hatcheries A nationwide survey of the hatchery industry in 1959 indicated that the industry was changing Since that time, both the number of firms and the incubator capacities have decreased steadily. On January 1, 1961, there were chick hatcheries (broiler and egg-type) in the United States. These firms had a total incubator capacity of eggs. Four years later, on January 1, 1965, there were only chick hatcheries with an incubator capacity Of eggs All size groups of hatcheries have decreased in number except the largest-those with an incubator capacity of eggs or more. The continuing movement to fewer and larger hatcheries suggests that economies of scale exist, that is, that costs per unit of output decrease as size Of hatchery increases. Small or inefficient hatcheries are experiencing greater difficulty in remaining competitive. Decreases in the number of farms that raise chickens and eggs, shifts in regional output of broilers and eggs, and increases in the size of the remain ing flocks are also contributing to the difficulties of many small hatcheries. This publication analyses the potential economies of scale in hatching straight-run broiler chicks, the cost of distributing broiler chicks, and the combined costs of an integrated poultry system consisting of broiler processing, chick hatching, broiler assembling, and chick distributing functions. The authors appreciate the cooperation of the hatchery operators who provided information and data on input-output relationships and costs and those manufacturers and suppliers of hatchery equipment and supplies who furnished data on specifications, capacities and costs.
