Integrating history, biodiversity, ethnobotany, geology, ecology, archaeology, anthropology, and other disciplines, The Lowland Maya Area is a valuable guide to the fascinating relationship between man and his environment in the Yucatán peninsula. This book covers virtually every aspect of the biology and ecology of the Maya Lowlands and the many ways that human beings have interacted with their surroundings in that area for the last three thousand years. You'll learn about newly discovered archaeological evidence of wetland use; the domestication and use of cacao and henequen plants; a biodiversity assessment of a select group of plants, animals, and microorganisms; the area's forgotten cotton, indigo, and wax industries; the ecological history of the Yucatán Peninsula; and much more. The Lowland Maya Area explores: the impact of hurricanes and fire on local environments historic and modern Maya concepts of forests the geologic history of the Yucatán challenges to preserving Maya architecture newly-discovered evidence of fertilizer use among the ancient Maya cooperation between locals and researchers that fosters greater knowledge on both sides recommendations to help safeguard the future The Lowland Maya Area is an ideal single source for reliable information on the many ecological and social issues of this dynamic area. Book The Maritime Political Boundaries of the World

Download or read book The Maritime Political Boundaries of the World written by Victor Prescott and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the often vexed question of national maritime claims and the delimitation of international maritime boundaries. The number of undelimited international maritime boundaries is much larger than the number of agreed lines. The two boundaries that define the marine domain of coastal states are examined. First, the baselines along the coast may consist of low-water lines or straight lines or a combination of both. When straight lines are used they define the seaward limit of the state's internal waters. Second, the outer limits of claims to territorial seas, contiguous zones and exclusive economic zones are measured from the baselines. All states will have to delimit at least one international boundary with a neighbouring state, whether adjacent or opposite. In confined seas no state can claim the full entitlement and must negotiate international boundaries with all neighbours. Many states bordering oceans can claim the full entitlement seawards, although they will need to delimit national boundaries with adjacent neighbours.

Book Central American Biodiversity

Download or read book Central American Biodiversity written by Falk Huettmann and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 811 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights key results and lessons learnt from two field sites, La Suerte in Costa Rica and Ometepe Nicaragua. It provides long term data on species abundance and distribution. Primates receive specific attention in this book, as they are flagship species and good indicators for the “health” of an ecosystem, but as well a money maker. Many primate species are sensitive to habitat alteration, and are often hunted out first. But they play an important role as seed dispersal agents for the regeneration of the forest. The book then compares results from the two field sites with regional trends, and explores potential solutions such as REDD+. This book strongly calls for new approaches in conservation, it makes the case for looking beyond the pure species biology and classic conservation angle and to take into account the economic and political realities.

Book Conservation of Biological Resources

Download or read book Conservation of Biological Resources written by E. J. Milner-Gulland and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-07-15 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the issues surrounding the conservation of wildspecies and ecosystems used by people. It is aimed at final yearundergraduate and master's students taking courses in conservation, environmental management, ecological economics and relatedsubjects, as well as conservation professionals, includingmanagers, policy-makers and researchers. The structure of the bookis ideal for a course in conservation, comprising a theoreticalsection written by the authors, and a set of ten contributed casestudies intentionally diverse in discipline, geographical regionand system of study. The theoretical section provides the knowledgethat is needed to understand the issues, while the case studies canform the basis of seminars. Readers will emerge with a clearrecognition of the difficulties of limiting the harvesting ofbiological resources to sustainable levels, and of the boundariesof sustainable use as a conservation tool. The authors, an ecologist and an anthropologist, have bothworked on the conservation and sustainable use of wildlife forseveral years, including the ivory and rhino horn trades. The first book to examine the issues underlying thesustainable use debate in a fully interdisciplinary manner. Boththe theoretical section and the case studies approach the issuesusing methods from economics, ecology, anthropology and otherfields Designed as a course textbook, combining a theoretical sectionwith invited case studies written by expert practitioners in thefield Outlines the new direction that conservation biology (and thusconservation biologists) must take if it is to be successful
