Book The Canadian Naval Chronicle 1939 1945

Download or read book The Canadian Naval Chronicle 1939 1945 written by Robert A. Darlington and published by St. Catharines, Ont. : Vanwell Pub.. This book was released on 1998 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In World War II the Canadian Navy embarked on a five-year anti-submarine offensive with a tiny fleet of six destroyers and a navy largely untrained in submarine warfare. This chronicle of ship successes and losses charts the increase in fighting capability of the Canadian naval forces and their growing success against enemy submarines and surface warships. From the dreadful loss of sixteen ships out of a single convoy in 1941, to the painstaking teamwork of hunting down and destroying an asdic contact a few years later, the authors have managed to capture the drama of these events in considerable detail. The information provided in each account represents comprehensive research into the incident from available records and from personal recollections and interviews collected by the authors. Each includes the ships and crews involved on both sides, their movements just prior to the event, the action itself, the casualty lists, and the medals awarded as a result of the action. This book also contains, for the first time, a complete record of all the Canadian owned Merchant ships lost, as well as a table of RCAF Squadron successes against enemy U-boats. --

This book was released on 2003 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of a forgotten fighting service. During the Second World War the Royal Canadian Navy expanded from a tiny force of ten warships in 1939 to the third largest Allied navy by 1945. The RCN's primary wartime role was convoy escort in the North Atlantic, and Canadian warships served in this grim theatre, where the weather was an enemy almost as dangerous as the U-boats, for nearly six years. In Peril on the Sea is the story of the Canadian navy and its important contribution to Allied victory in the Battle of the Atlantic -- the most crucial battle of the Second World War. Much of this fascinating saga is presented through the personal accounts of 65 eyewitnesses -- British, Canadian, German... sailors, submariners and merchant seamen -- who participated in the Second World War's longest operation. In Peril on the Sea contains nearly 200 photographs, drawings, maps, graphics and ship profiles which bring to life with compelling immediacy the grim but courageous struggle to preserve the sea lanes of freedom between 1939 and 1945. Commissioned by the Canadian Naval Memorial Trust and written by one of Canada's foremost historians, In Peril on the Sea will appeal to general and specialist readers alike. Book jacket.

Book excerpt: The Far Distant Ships, first published in 1950, recounts the often overlooked but vital contribution made by the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) to the Allied victory in World War II. Especially critical in protecting the endless convoys crossing the North Atlantic from the US to Great Britain, the Canadian navy used its limited men and ships to their utmost. Their resourcefulness was also reflected in their development of the corvette, a small convoy escort ship, built in Canadian shipyards, that proved to be one of the most effective antisubmarine vessels of the war. The RCN also served important roles in Allied landings in North Africa, Italy, and Normandy. Illustrated throughout with photographs, maps, and figures; and an appendix details principal ships of the RCN and their commanders, and other organizational details.

Book excerpt: The Canadian escort group C 2 was comprised of the RCN destroyers Gatineau and Chaudiere, the frigate St. Catharines, the Corvettes Chilliwack and Fennel, and the RN destroyer Icarus. these six and the RN corvette Kenilworth castle combined to sing U-744 in the North Atlantic in a prolonged drama on March 5 and 6, 1944. At 32 hours, this the second-longest successful hunt of the war. Chilliwack able seaman Ralph Chartrand recalls the action: When the sub started to surface, everything that could shoot went into action and we fired all we could. While the crew of U-744 was jumping out of the conning tower, St. Catharines was closing in, but our captain outmanoeuvred Chilliwack in front to make sure that this was our sub. He gave the order "Prepare to ram," but soon the sub was empty, so we didn't ram. We lowered a lifeboat with a boarding party and they proceeded to U-744. While the lifeboat was tied to the sub, some members boarded the sub. then a big wave hit our lifeboat and flipped the crew into the water with the German Sailors. We took 17 prisoners on board. It was almost a major coup. Three lifeboats reached the Type VII C boat. German code books and the cypher machine were seized, but all three seaboats capsized in the rough sea and only one book was saved. All the Canadians were picked up. So, too, were 40 Germans. Icarus then dispatched the unsalable U-744 with a torpedo. Eleven Germans died, including the captain. Praise for Corvettes Canada. "It was the ubiquitous corvette, built in Canada, manned by volunteers and often as not based in a Canadian or Newfoundland port, that carried the burden of our Atlantic war...and few wartime sailors escaped at least some time aboard them. "For the most part, their experiences have gone unrecorded--especially those of the lower deck--and time will soon erase what the enemy and the sea itself could not. Fortunately, Mac Johnston has salvaged the experiences of 250 of these fast-departing corvette veterans, and has drawn their story together into a superb collective memoir of the Atlantic war. "Johnston has woven these memories...and the history of the wartime RCN into a tight fabric, one that is both entertaining and extremely valuable. If you have never read anything on the Canadian navy's part in the Battle of the Atlantic, start with this one; if you've read everything that's already available, you will find this one a gem." --Marc Milner, University of New Brunswick "I like your presentation. It's right from the horse's mouth so to speak. It is so authentic, I say it is a classic. It's as true a story as can be told. Corvette men who read your book, contributors or not, will marvel at your format and will live again the tortures of the Atlantic, the friendship of shipmates, the action stations alarm bell and the roar of depth changes... "Your book proves that these Corvette men were tough to stand the day-to-day tensions, rough seas, dangers and the boredom that was part of their sea life. You have done a wonderful story." -- Leo McVarish, HMCS Alberni, Winnipeg, Man.

Download or read book The U boat Hunters written by Marc Milner and published by US Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Royal Canadian Navy is best known for its role in the defence of convoys against attacks by U-boats, particularly those in the mid-Atlantic from 1941 to 1943. Marc Milner's 1985 book, North Atlantic Run: The Royal Canadian Navy and the Battle for the Convoys, was the first scholarly analysis of those crucial defensive operations. The U-Boat Hunters takes up the story for the last two years of the war, when the measurement of operational effectiveness at sea shifted from success in defending convoys to the ability to hunt down and sink U-boats. The U-Boat Hunters, which completes Milner's analysis of the RCN's battle with Germany's submarines, is a pioneering study of the final years of the Atlantic war and a landmark work in both Canadian and modern naval history.

Book The Necessary War Volume 1

Download or read book The Necessary War Volume 1 written by Tim Cook and published by Penguin Canada. This book was released on 2014-09-09 with total page 734 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Co-winner of the 2014-2015 Charles P. Stacey Award Tim Cook, Canada’s leading war historian, ventures deep into World War Two in this epic two-volume story of heroism and horror, of loss and longing, sacrifice and endurance. Written in Cook’s compelling narrative style, this book shows in impressive detail how soldiers, airmen, and sailors fought—the evolving tactics, weapons of war, logistics, and technology. It gauges Canadian effectiveness against the skilled enemy whom they confronted in battlefields from 1939 to 1943, from the sweltering heat of Sicily to the frigid North Atlantic, and from the urban warfare of Ortona to the dark skies over Germany. The Necessary War examines the equally important factors of morale, discipline, and fortitude of the Canadian citizen-soldiers. The war was an engine of transformation for Canada. With a population of fewer than twelve million, Canada embraced its role as an arsenal of democracy, exporting war supplies, feeding its allies, and raising a million-strong armed forces that served and fought in nearly every theatre of war. The nation was mobilized like never before in the fight to preserve the liberal democratic order. The six-year-long exertion caused disruption, provoked nationwide industrialization, ushered in changes to gender roles, exacerbated the tension between English and French, and forged a new sense of Canadian identity. Canadians were willing to bear almost any burden and to pay the ultimate price in the pursuit of victory. As with his award-winning two-volume series on WWI, Tim Cook uses original sources, letters from soldiers, rare documents, and maps of battlefields to illustrate the contributions and sacrifices made by what is often called the greatest generation. Magisterial in its scope, The Necessary War illuminates Canada’s past as never before. From the Western Front to the home front, Canadians served many roles in a war that had to be fought and won.

Book Flower Class Corvettes

Download or read book Flower Class Corvettes written by John Lambert and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2010-10-30 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A guide to creating models of the World War II warship, featuring history on the ship as well as crafting tips. The “ShipCraft” series provides in-depth information about building and modifying model kits of famous warship types. Lavishly illustrated, each book takes the modeler through a brief history of the subject class, highlighting differences between sister-ships and changes in their appearance over their careers. This includes paint schemes and camouflage, featuring color profiles, highly detailed line drawings, and scale plans. The modelling section reviews the strengths and weaknesses of available kits, lists commercial accessory sets for super-detailing of the ships, and provides hints on modifying and improving the basic kit. This is followed by an extensive photographic gallery of selected high-quality models in a variety of scales, and the book concludes with a section on research references—books, monographs, large-scale plans and relevant websites. This volume includes all the features of the regular series, but the extent has been doubled to include far more detailed drawings of a class of ship that was built in huge numbers and in many variations. Mainstay of the Atlantic battle against the U-boats, Flower class corvettes were used by the British, Canadian, French, and U.S. Navies. “An excellent guide to an important ship in the Second World War, for modeler and maritime enthusiasts alike.” —The Nautical Magazine
