Book Corrosion and Failure Characteristics of Zirconium Alloys in High Pressure Steam in the Temperature Range 400 to 500 C

Download or read book Corrosion and Failure Characteristics of Zirconium Alloys in High Pressure Steam in the Temperature Range 400 to 500 C written by A. B. Johnson and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A nuclear fuel-failure phenomenon prompted a study of the corrosion properties of the Zircaloy-2 fuel cladding. The principal studies were conducted at 400, 450, 475, and 500 C in steam at 1700 psig. Materials tested were: five lots of Zircaloy-2; one lot of Ozhennite (Zr-0.2Sn-0.1Fe-0.1Ni-0.1Nb); and one lot of crystal bar zirconium. As-fabricated (rolled or extruded) Zircaloy-2 underwent a rapid approach to failure in tests at 475 and 500 C. The attack involved nucleation of nodular oxide which spread across the surface, finally resulting in an accelerated, relatively uniform attack. Ozhennite was resistant to the attack. Heat treatments (? and ? anneals) delayed the catastrophic attack on Zircaloy-2 but not on crystal bar zirconium.

Book Effect of Alloying Elements on Uniform Corrosion Resistance of Zirconium based Alloys in 360 C Water and 400 C Steam

Download or read book Effect of Alloying Elements on Uniform Corrosion Resistance of Zirconium based Alloys in 360 C Water and 400 C Steam written by K. Abe and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of alloying and impurity elements on the uniform corrosion properties of zirconium-based alloys were studied, Tin, iron, chromium, nickel, vanadium, niobium, and tantalum (as alloying elements), and oxygen, carbon, nitrogen, silicon, aluminum, and phosphorus (as impurities), were selected. These alloys consisted of two groups: Zircaloy-type alloys and zirconium-based alloys. Corrosion tests were performed in 633 K water and 673 K steam for a total of 7200 h. The effect on hydrogen pick-up was also studied.

Book Corrosion Studies of Ternary Zirconium Alloys in High temperature Water and Steam

Download or read book Corrosion Studies of Ternary Zirconium Alloys in High temperature Water and Steam written by R. D. Misch and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examination of the oxide film from alloys containing scandium and molybdenum showed only monoclinic ZrO2. It is believed that stabilization of this form of ZrO2 instead of the cubic or tetragonal forms is a factor in promoting corrosion resistance. In this way the protective character of the film can be improved independently of the addition of cathodes.

Book The Corrosion of Zircaloy Base Fuel Alloys in High Temperature Water

Book Oxidation of Zirconium and Zirconium Alloys

Download or read book Oxidation of Zirconium and Zirconium Alloys written by and published by . This book was released on 1959 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The oxidation rate was found to be relatively insensitive to various types of surface preparations in the temperature range 400 to 700 deg C. No dependence of reaction rate on oxygen pressure was observed. The cubic rate law also was obeyed by foil specimens at 700 deg C; however, the rate constants were slightly larger than values obtained from parallelepiped samples.
