Book excerpt: Copper and Zn are essential micronutrients for plants, animals, and humans; however, they may also be pollutants if they occur at high concentrations in soil. Therefore, knowledge of Cu and Zn cycling in soils is required both for guaranteeing proper nutrition and to control possible risks arising from pollution.rnThe overall objective of my study was to test if Cu and Zn stable isotope ratios can be used to investigate into the biogeochemistry, source and transport of these metals in soils. The use of stable isotope ratios might be especially suitable to trace long-term processes occurring during soil genesis and transport of pollutants through the soil. In detail, I aimed to answer the questions, whether (1) Cu stable isotopes are fractionated during complexation with humic acid, (2) d65Cu values can be a tracer for soil genetic processes in redoximorphic soils (3) d65Cu values can help to understand soil genetic processes under oxic weathering conditions, and (4) d65Cu and d66Zn values can act as tracers of sources and transport of Cu and Zn in polluted soils.rnTo answer these questions, I ran adsorption experiments at different pH values in the laboratory and modelled Cu adsorption to humic acid. Furthermore, eight soils were sampled representing different redox and weathering regimes of which two were influenced by stagnic water, two by groundwater, two by oxic weathering (Cambisols), and two by podzolation. In all horizons of these soils, I determined selected basic soil properties, partitioned Cu into seven operationally defined fractions and determined Cu concentrations and Cu isotope ratios (d65Cu values). Finally, three additional soils were sampled along a deposition gradient at different distances to a Cu smelter in Slovakia and analyzed together with bedrock and waste material from the smelter for selected basic soil properties, Cu and Zn concentrations and d65Cu and d66Zn values.rnMy results demonstrated that (1) Copper was fractionated during adsorpti.

Book excerpt: The Superfund program of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was created in the 1980s to address human-health and environmental risks posed by abandoned or uncontrolled hazardous-waste sites. Identification of Superfund sites and their remediation is an expensive multistep process. As part of this process, EPA attempts to identify parties that are responsible for the contamination and thus financially responsible for remediation. Identification of potentially responsible parties is complicated because Superfund sites can have a long history of use and involve contaminants that can have many sources. Such is often the case for mining sites that involve metal contamination; metals occur naturally in the environment, they can be contaminants in the wastes generated at or released from the sites, and they can be used in consumer products, which can degrade and release the metals back to the environment. This report examines the extent to which various sources contribute to environmental lead contamination at Superfund sites that are near lead-mining areas and focuses on sources that contribute to lead contamination at sites near the Southeast Missouri Lead Mining District. It recommends potential improvements in approaches used for assessing sources of lead contamination at or near Superfund sites.

Book excerpt: Since the end of the 19th century, the use of copper (Cu)-based fungicides has resulted in increased Cu concentrations in vineyard soils, but also in downstream aquatic ecosystems. The aim of the thesis was to better understand the fate of this Cu in an agrosystem based on assessing Cu isotope fractionation (65Cu/63Cu). The results have shown that the surface vineyard soils have become enriched in Cu from 9 to 28 times compared to the background level during 4 to 5 decades of vine-growing and that clay minerals were the major Cu sorbing phases in the soils. During rainfall, runoff mobilized ~1% of the applied Cu during the, mainly associated with clays. The stormwater wetland collecting the runoff retained in average 68% of the dissolved and more than 92% of particulate Cu. Cu isotope ratios measured in the wetland suggested dissolved Cu sorption to the sediments and in situ reduction of Cu(II) due to biogeochemical processes.

Their isotopic ratios are robust tracers used to understand the origin of the Solar System, planetary formation and differentiation processes. In this thesis, I focus on their isotopic behaviors during magmatic processes. I report the Zn isotopic compositions of representative igneous rocks to determine potential isotopic fractionations associated with magmatic processes, and to estimate the bulk silicate Earth value. I report isotopic compositions of various groups of iron meteorites (samples of which represent the core of asteroids) and discuss the data's implications for volatile history of the parent bodies of these meteorites. Chapter 1 is a short introduction to this dissertation. I summarize the geochemical properties of Zn and Cu, and discuss why their isotopes are powerful tracers in geochemistry and cosmochemistry studies. Next I introduce some basic knowledge about the meteorites with an emphasis on irons, which represent most of the meteoritic samples used in this thesis. In addition, I discuss the general concepts of mass-dependent and mass-independent isotopic fractionations, as well as Rayleigh distillation during evaporation processes. Finally, I review the isotopic analysis technique of Zn and Cu using anion-exchange chromatography and MC-ICP-MS. Chapter 2 evaluates Zn isotopic fractionation during magmatic processes and the bulk Earth value. This work has been published in Earth and Planetary Sciences Letters (Chen et al., 2013). Non-traditional stable isotopes are new and powerful proxies in the study of planetary formation and differentiation processes. However, their applications are currently limited by our knowledge of how these isotope systems are affected by igneous processes. This is particularly important because most of the materials available from planetary bodies are differentiated igneous rocks, and therefore, it is necessary to understand isotopic behavior during magmatic processes as well as to evaluate the isotopic composition of the bulk Earth for inter-planetary comparison. In order to assess the isotopic behavior of Zn, I precisely measured the Zn isotopic compositions of two suites of igneous rocks (Kilauea Iki lava lake, Hawaii, and Hekla volcano, Iceland). Book excerpt: Coastal areas worldwide are under strong pressure from anthropogenic contamination, as most of the global population and of economic activities are concentrated along the coasts and estuaries. The threaten of contaminant releasing into these ecosystems makes imperative the development of tools capable of detecting biogeochemical changes in order to help prevention, monitoring and prediction of risks in environmental studies. In this way, this thesis investigates the isotope biogeochemistry of Zinc (Zn) in order to develop a tool capable of tracing natural and anthropogenic sources, identifying biogeochemical processes and enabling the biomonitoring of metal contamination in coastal areas and mangroves. To this end, Zn isotopes compositions were determined in several natural samples collected from Sepetiba bay (southeastern Brazil), an estuarine-lagoon impacted by an industrialized coastal area near Rio de Janeiro. This bay constitutes an ideal natural laboratory for evaluating the Zn isotopic system to environmental issues, since it hosts important ecosystems of commercial and ecological interest - estuaries, mangroves and tidal flats - threaten by the metal contamination resultant of old electroplating activity and other anthropogenic diffuse sources. The collected samples include sediment cores, surface mangrove sediments, suspended particulate matter (SPM), leaves of mangrove's trees, tissues of bivalve mollusks (oysters and mussels) and rocks. Ores from Vazante deposit, Brazil were collected to represent the raw material used in the old electroplating industry. Firstly, an initial laboratory work established a method for accurate and precise determinations of Zn isotope compositions in natural samples by multi-collector inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS). Spatial and temporal analysis of Zn isotope compositions of sediment and rock samples fits well in a model of mixing between three main end-members: i) continental materials brought via rivers; ii) marine sources; and iii) a major anthropogenic source associated to the old electroplating wastes released into the bay. Sediment cores collected in the mud flat showed high correlation between Zn isotope compositions and Zn enrichment factors, suggesting (i) good preservation of isotopic records of natural and anthropogenic sources and (ii) no significant isotopic fractionation during sediment transport or as a result of diagenetic reactions post-deposition in the estuarine system. The sediment core sampled from a mangrove located in the zone impacted by the old electroplating activity presented levels of Zn up to 4% (dry weight) and preserved the isotopic signatures of electroplating wastes. However, there is evidence that biogeochemical processes triggered by hydrodynamics, bioturbation or rhizosphere processes slightly changed the isotopic signatures in some layers. Calculations based in this mixing model quantified contributions of the major anthropogenic source of Zn, ranging from negligible values in the pre-industrial period to nearly 80% during periods of electroplating activities between the 60's and 90's.

Book excerpt: Documented variations in the isotopic compositions of some chemical elements are responsible for expanded uncertainties in the standard atomic weights published by the Commission on Atomic Weights and Isotopic Abundances of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry. This report summarizes reported variations in the isotopic compositions of 20 elements that are due to physical and chemical fractionation processes (not due to radioactive decay) and their effects on the standard atomic weight uncertainties. For 11 of those elements (hydrogen, lithium, boron, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, silicon, sulfur, chlorine, copper, and selenium), standard atomic weight uncertainties have been assigned values that are substantially larger than analytical uncertainties because of common isotope abundance variations in materials of natural terrestrial origin. For 2 elements (chromium and thallium), recently reported isotope abundance variations potentially are large enough to result in future expansion of their atomic weight uncertainties. For 7 elements (magnesium, calcium, iron, zinc, molybdenum, palladium, and tellurium), documented isotope-abundance variations in materials of natural terrestrial origin are too small to have a significant effect on their standard atomic weight uncertainties.
