Book Cooperative Effects in Matter and Radiation

Download or read book Cooperative Effects in Matter and Radiation written by C. Bowden and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the large majority of the papers presented at the Cooperative Effects Meeting which was held as part of the US Army Sponsored Symposium on New Laser Concepts at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama, from November 30 through December 2, 1976. The motivation for the meeting was to bring together a representative cross-section of research scientists active in related areas of cooperative effects in matter-radiation field interaction and coherent pulse generation and propagation. An emphasis was placed upon the rapidly developing areas of superradiance and superf1uorescence, with a balance between theory and experiment in regard to the choice of speakers. This meeting came at a very fortunate time when new experimental results in metal vapors and gases have just recently been realized. Also represented on the programwereareas dealing with new laser concepts such as the free electron laser and two photon amplifier. A few supplemental papers are included in this volume which were authored by participants at the meeting, but were not present on the agenda, primarily due to limited time. These were included because of their relation to the content of papers which were presented and/or were the subject of discussion among attendees. The meeting consisted of eleven invited papers and two work shop sessions, each with a panel. The order of the papers in this volume generally follows the order of their presentation on the agenda. However, the supplemental papers have been inserted where appropriate.

Book Cooperative Effects in Optics Superradiance and Phase Transitions

Download or read book Cooperative Effects in Optics Superradiance and Phase Transitions written by Andreev and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cooperative Effects in Optics: Superradiance and Phase Transitions presents a systematic treatment of the modern theory of cooperative optical phenomena-processes in which the behavior of many-body systems of radiators or absorbers is essentially determined by their collective interactions with each other. The book focuses on the theory of collective spontaneous radiation (superradiance) and provides a detailed physical explanation of the mechanism of collective spontaneous emission. It considers numerous models of novel nonequilibrium light-induced phase transitions in a typical quantum electronics system, including two-level atoms interacting with the radiation field and more complex systems of three-level atoms, two-bank semiconductors, and other interatomic interactions with the electrostatic and lattice displacement fields. The book uses some of these models for the interpretation of experimentally observed light-induced critical phenomena. Cooperative Effects in Optics is of great value to research workers in the field of cooperative optical phenomena, especially in the determination of the physical essence of theoretical models developed to describe cooperative effects in multi-atomic systems.

Book Characteristics of Cooperative Spontaneous Radiation with Applications to Atom Microscopy and Coherent XUV Radiation Generation

Download or read book Characteristics of Cooperative Spontaneous Radiation with Applications to Atom Microscopy and Coherent XUV Radiation Generation written by Juntao Chang and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cooperative effect in the radiation process has been studied in for more than half a century. It is important in the sense of both basic physics and applied science. In this work, we study the dynamics of the cooperative spontaneous emission from an ensemble of N atoms which is uniformly excited by absorbing a single photon. We reveal that there are two different regimes in which the system exhibits totally different behaviors. One of them is the superradiance type of behavior: the system decays much quicker than single atom decay, with a decay rate proportional to N(a/R)2, where N is the atom numbers, R is the size of the atom cloud, and a the wavelength. We call it Markovian regime because the sytem does not persist memory effect. The other regime is called non-Markovian regime and the system oscillates with effective Rabi oscillation frequency while slowly decaying with a rate proportional to the photon escaping rate. The effective Rabi oscillation is a new type of dynamics which analogs well known Cavity QED behavior. Particularly in the Markovian regime, we study the system dynamics as a manybody eigenfunction and eigenvalue problem. For a dense cloud, we find analytical solutions for the eigenstates and corresponding eigenvalues, which can help to generally describe the system dynamics for any initial conditions in this regime. One of the applications is in atom microscopy. We propose a scheme to measure the distance between two atoms/molecules beyond diffraction limit. It covers the whole range from half the wavelength to sub-nanometers, utilizing both the atom localization technique and the collective frequency shift effect due to the cooperative effect in the radiation of the two atoms. Another application that we propose is to generate Coherent XUV radiation using Raman-type superradaince. We prove that intense short pulses of XUV radiation can be produced by Raman type superradiance from an ensemble of atoms/ions driven by visible or IR laser pulses.

Book Infrared and Millimeter Waves

Download or read book Infrared and Millimeter Waves written by Kenneth Button and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Infrared and Millimeter Waves, Volume 1: Sources of Radiation explores modern sources of radiation available for use in the far-infrared and near-millimeter wavelength range of the spectrum. This book describes the operating principles and comparative performances of all three types of device: electron tubes, solid state devices, and optically pumped lasers. This volume is comprised of seven chapters; the first of which reviews the developments in the design and construction of high-power, high-efficiency millimeter sources and in the nonlinear theory for cyclotron masers. The second chapter deals with IMPATT devices for millimeter-wave power generation, with emphasis on device physics design considerations as well as cw and pulsed operations of IMPATT oscillators and amplifiers at millimeter frequencies. The chapters that follow focus on optically pumped lasers, backward wave oscillators, the Ledatron, and infrared and submillimeter-wave waveguides. This book concludes with a discussion on free electron lasers based on stimulated scattering from relativistic electron beams. An original reformulation of stimulated scattering theory that attempts to encompass all previous treatments is described and compared with available experimental data. This text also presents a semi-qualitative analysis of nonlinear saturation. This book will appeal to scientists and professional engineers.

Book Cooperative Stewardship

Download or read book Cooperative Stewardship written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-01-08 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Committee on Developing a Federal Materials Facilities Strategy was appointed by the National Research Council (NRC) in response to a request by the federal agencies involved in funding and operating multidisciplinary user facilities for research with synchrotron radiation, neutrons, and high magnetic fields. Starting in August 1996, a series of conversations and meetings was held among NRC staff and officials from the National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (Department of Commerce), and the National Institutes of Health. The agencies were concerned that facilities originally developed to support research in materials science were increasingly used by scientists from other fields-particularly the biological sciences-whose research was supported by agencies other than those responsible for the facilities. This trend, together with the introduction of several new, large user facilities in the last decade, led the agencies to seek advice on the possible need for interagency cooperation in the management of these federal research facilities.

Book Multiple Photon Excitation and Dissociation of Polyatomic Molecules

Download or read book Multiple Photon Excitation and Dissociation of Polyatomic Molecules written by Cyrus D. Cantrell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1970s, researchers in Canada, the Soviet Union and the United States discovered that powerful infrared laser pulses are capable of dissociating mole cules such as SiF4 and SF6' This result, which was so unexpected that for some time the phenomenon of multiple-photon dissociation was not recognized in many cir cumstances in which we now know that it occurs, was first publicized at a time when the possibility of using lasers for the separation of isotopes had attracted much attention in the scientific community. From the mid-1970s to the early 1980s, hun dreds of experimental papers were published describing the multiple-photon absorp tion of C02 laser pulses in nearly every simple molecule with an absorption band in the 9 - 11 jJm region. Despite this impressive volume of experimental results, and despite the efforts of numerous theorists, there is no agreement among re searchers in the field on many fundamental aspects of the absorption of infrared laser light by polyatomic molecules. This book is devoted to reviells of the experimental and theoretical research that provides the foundations for our current understanding of molecular multiple photon exc itat i on, and to rev i ews of research that is pert i nent to the 1 aser sep aration of isotopes.
