Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cooperative Economic Insect Report, Vol. 12: December 21, 1962 The corn earworm was a more serious pest of commercial canning corn in northern Utah during 1957 and 1958 than in 1956, 1959, 1960, 1961 or 1962. This is reflected in the catch of corn earworm moths taken in the three blacklight traps operated each season. This study of the adult Heliothis zea moth catch was made possible through Cooperation of the management and agricultural field personnel, California Packing Corporation, which Operated a blacklight trap at Roy or Ogden in Weber County, and one each at Spanish Fork and Benjamin in Utah County during 1956 1957. The Spanish Fork light was moved to, and Operated at, nearby Salem during 1960, 1961 and 1962. The Weber County light was moved to the factory area a few miles to west Ogden, for operation during 1958 1962. This light - trapping program was carried out in an effort to better understand and record the flight habits of this important agricultural pest. Populations were annoying in oklahoma in homes and buildings in the north central area by mid - March. Populations of this pest remained below normal throughout mid-june but reached a peak of activity in late June. During July and August populations showed a downward trend which continued until early September, then populations increased. By late September and early October, house fly became numerous in sheltered areas as cooler weather prevailed. In kansas, house fly populations were present in normal numbers; whereas in nebraska, this pest ranged average to heavy throughout the season, with a late buildup in the sandhills area during October. Populations in illinois were heavier than in 1965. Corn losses in southern Illinois were percent compared with percent in 1965. This increase was partly due to drought. Infestations in indiana were much lower in 1966. The fall corn insect survey showed percent of corn infested with corn earworm in 1966 compared with percent in 1965. The heaviest infestations occurred in the southern quarter of Indiana. Very few corn earworm larvae were reported from southern michigan. The usual late summer moth flight from southern areas did not occur. Only A moths were taken in blacklight traps during the second week in September, thus seasonal catches for 1966 were the lightest recorded during recent years. Moths were first collected in blacklight traps July 29 in wisconsin. Moths and larvae were light and little damage to corn occurred. Temperatures in Wyoming Thursday afternoon ranged from 39° at Lander to 58° at Cheyenne. Thursday's maximums over the northern Great Plains ranged from the so's near the international boundary to the 6o's in northern Nebraska and Iowa. As this front advanced southeastward, cool autumn weather replaced summer heat. Much of the East was 20° or more cooler Sunday afternoon than on Saturday. Temperatures averaged slightly above normal along the Pacific coast. Inland portions of Washington, Oregon, and California and eastward to a line from northwestern Wisconsin to southeastern Texas averaged cooler than normal. Much of the Great Basin, the central Rocky Mountains, and the western edge of the Great Plains averaged from 9° to 11° colder than normal.
