Book Particulate Gravity Currents

Download or read book Particulate Gravity Currents written by W. D. McCaffrey and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2009-03-05 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume arises from the conference Sediment Transport andDeposition by Particulate Gravity Currents held in the UK in 1998.The field of particulate gravity currents ranges from turbiditycurrents in the oceans, lakes and reservoirs to pyroclastic densitycurrents and avalanches, debris flows and lahars, grainflows, powder snow avalanches, effluent dispersal and ancient gravitycurrent deposits. Although the sub-division of particulate gravity currents intodiscrete sub-categories (such as grain flows, turbidity currents ordebris flows) provides a convenient descriptive shorthand, itundermines the sense of process continuum needed to describe manynatural flows. The structure of this volume reflects an integrativeaim, with papers grouped by research approach. The first section ofthe book contains six papers on theoretical and numerical modellingof a range of flow types. The following four papers are focusedupon combined theoretical and experimental modelling approaches. The next section contains four papers describing experimentalmodelling and the final section includes five papers detailingfield-based studies. The volume stands as a testament to the broad range of researchcarried out on particulate gravity currents, and hints at theenhanced rate of progress that is likely to be achieved throughfurther integrated studies. Book Landslide Analysis and Early Warning Systems

Download or read book Landslide Analysis and Early Warning Systems written by Benni Thiebes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-21 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent landslide events demonstrate the need to improve landslide forecasting and early warning capabilities in order to reduce related risks and protect human lives. In this thesis, local and regional investigations were carried out to analyse landslide characteristics in the Swabian Alb region, and to develop prototypic landslide early warning systems. In the local study area, an extensive hydrological and slope movement monitoring system was installed on a seasonally reactivated landslide body located in Lichtenstein- Unterhausen. Monitoring data was analysed to assess the influence of rainfall and snow-melt on groundwater conditions, and the initiation of slope movements. The coupled hydrology-slope stability model CHASM was applied to detect areas most prone to slope failures, and to simulate slope stability using a variety of input data. Subsequently, CHASM was refined and two web-based applications were developed: a technical early warning system to constantly simulate slope stability integrating rainfall measurements, hydrological monitoring data and weather forecasts; and a decision-support system allowing for quick calculation of stability for freely selectable slope profiles. On the regional scale, available landslide inventory data were analysed for their use in evaluation of rainfall thresholds proposed in other studies. Adequate landslide events were selected and their triggering rainfall and snow-melting conditions were compared to intensity-duration and cumulative thresholds. Based on the results, a regional landslide early warning system was developed and implemented as a webbased application. Both, the local and the regional landslide early warning systems are part of a holistic and integrative early warning chain developed by the ILEWS project, and could easily be transferred to other landslide prone areas.

Book Terzaghi Lectures

Download or read book Terzaghi Lectures written by Karl Terzaghi and published by ASCE Publications. This book was released on 1986-01-01 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sponsored by the Executive Committee of the Geotechnical Engineering Division of ASCE. This Geotechnical Special Publication contains eight lectures given between 1974 and 1983 in honor of Karl Terzaghi and repressenting diverse aspects of geotechnical engineering and engineering geology. Topics include: the relationship of geology and geotechnical engineering and how a study of the geology of engineering sites is an important starting point for all geotechnical site studies; effects of dynamic soil properties on soil-structure interaction; bearing capacity and settlement of pile foundations; design and construction of drilled shafts; evaluating calculated risk in geotechnical engineering; proposal forØthe establishment of a national center for investigating civil engineering failures, with several case studies; pre-Columbian earth construction in the Americas and technological developments between 2,500 and 500 years ago; and recent progress in the design and construction of concrete-face rockfill dams. The 1978 lecture by the late N.M. Newmark is not included.
