Une technique acoustique nous permet de mesurer des profils de la concentration moyenne en fluide le long de l'echantillon. Instabilites : il est bien connu qu'en utilisant des liquides de differentes viscosites et/ou de densites, les zones de melanges dans de tels deplacements peuvent etre affectees par des digitations visqueuses ou gravitationnelles (instabilites de saffman-taylor et de rayleigh-taylor). Dans des milieux poreux homogenes, nous mesurons les vitesses critiques seuils de l'instabilite de deplacements verticaux, lorsque ces deux effets agissent simultanement mais avec une contribution opposee sur la stabilite de l'interface. Les resultats obtenus sur trois decades de rapports de viscosites, concordent bien avec une theorie aux petites longueurs d'onde, tenant compte de l'extension spatiale de l'interface due a la dispersion. Heterogeneites : la dispersion hydrodynamique d'un traceur passif a ete amplement etudiee dans les milieux poreux heterogenes. Nous considerons ici des ecoulements de fluides actifs, afin de comprendre le couplage entre un rapport de viscosites (et/ou un contraste de densites) avec des heterogeneites. A cette fin, nous travaillons dans des milieux constitues de plusieurs strates (2, 4, ou 6) de differentes permeabilites, disposees parallelement au sens de l'ecoulement. Pour un traceur, la progression de fronts distincts dans chacune des couches reflete les contrastes de permeabilites. L'effet stabilisant ou destabilisant de la viscosite (et/ou de la densite) masque ou amplifie ces contrastes.

Box 5800, Albuquerque, NM 87185, USA Gas and vapor transport in porous media occur in a number of important applications includingdryingofindustrialandfoodproducts,oilandgasexploration,environm- tal remediation of contaminated sites, and carbon sequestration. Understanding the fundamental mechanisms and processes of gas and vapor transport in porous media allows models to be used to evaluate and optimize the performance and design of these systems. In this book, gas and vapor are distinguished by their available states at stan- ? dard temperature and pressure (20 C, 101 kPa). If the gas-phase constituent can also exist as a liquid phase at standard temperature and pressure (e. g. , water, ethanol, toluene, trichlorothylene), it is considered a vapor. If the gas-phase constituent is non-condensable at standard temperature and pressure (e. g. , oxygen, carbon di- ide, helium, hydrogen, propane), it is considered a gas. The distinction is important because different processes affect the transport and behavior of gases and vapors in porous media. For example, mechanisms specific to vapors include vapor-pressure lowering and enhanced vapor diffusion, which are caused by the presence of a g- phase constituent interacting with its liquid phase in an unsaturated porous media. In addition, the “heat-pipe” exploits isothermal latent heat exchange during evaporation and condensation to effectively transfer heat in designed and natural systems.

Flowing matter is a subject at the crossroads between physics, mathematics, chemistry, engineering, biology and earth sciences, and relies on a multidisciplinary approach to describe the emergence of the macroscopic behaviours in a system from the coordinated dynamics of its microscopic constituents. Depending on the microscopic interactions, an assembly of molecules or of mesoscopic particles can flow like a simple Newtonian fluid, deform elastically like a solid or behave in a complex manner. When the internal constituents are active, as for biological entities, one generally observes complex large-scale collective motions. Phenomenology is further complicated by the invariable tendency of fluids to display chaos at the large scales or when stirred strongly enough. This volume presents several research topics that address these phenomena encompassing the traditional micro-, meso-, and macro-scales descriptions, and contributes to our understanding of the fundamentals of flowing matter.
