Die Studie lädt bereits durch ihren Untertitel "Der reformatorische Beitrag zum ökumenischen Dialog über kirchliche Einheit" zur ökumenischen Verständigung ein, Die Intention geht weit über die Entfaltung des Selbstverständnisses der reformatorischen Kirchen hinaus. Neben der innerprotestantischen Klärung des Themas ist daher das Gespräch mit anderen christlichen Kirchen hierüber unerlässlich. Eine besondere Bedeutung dieser Konsultation lag aber auch darin, dass das Thema der Ekklesiologie in den Dialogen zwischen den Kirchen der Reformation und den Orthodoxen Kirchen bisher nicht zentraler Gegenstand war. Bei der Analyse der Studie "Die Kirche Jesu Christi" wurden bestimmte Textaussagen als Ausdruck von gemeinsamen Positionen (Kirche als Geschöpf des dreieinigen Gottes) hervorgehoben, andere aus orthodoxer Sicht als erklärungsbedürftig (Unterscheidung von Grund und Gestalt der Kirche) und wieder andere als noch kontrovers (Kirche als Sünderin) eingeschätzt, wie in dem gemeinsam verabschiedeten Schlusskommuniqué aufgezeigt ist. Das Präsidium der Konferenz Europäischer Kirchen und der Exekutivausschuss der "Gemeinschaft evangelischer Kirchen in Europa", haben deshalb beschlossen, den vertrauensvoll begonnenen Dialog fortzusetzen und an den noch offenen Fragen in einer zweiten Gesprächsrunde theologisch weiterzuarbeiten.

The relationship of European Baptists during the cold war era is explored, as is the relationship to two key mission agencies from the USA who have done much work in Europe. This represents ground-breaking work in terms of an examination of how Baptists in Europe work together trans-nationally.

In this original and substantial work Lorelei Fuchs proposes the theological idea of koinonia, commonly translated as "communion" or "fellowship," as the key to moving fractured churches toward a future unity. Fuchs challenges churches to move beyond mere dialogue and to apply ecumenical insights at the local level. She begins by relating the exegetical meaning of koinonia to its ecumenical meaning, tracing the place of koinonia both within the churches and between the churches. She then examines the concept of koinonia in the extensive and fruitful dialogues that have taken place between Lutherans, Anglicans, and Roman Catholics, finally articulating a "symbolic competence for communionality" that provides a rich and workable way forward for church unity at all levels.
