Book Economic Spaces of Pastoral Production and Commodity Systems

Download or read book Economic Spaces of Pastoral Production and Commodity Systems written by Richard Le Heron and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pastoralism as a land use system is under recognized in terms of its contribution to food provision, livelihoods as well as to human security. This book is the first attempt to explore the dynamics of economic spaces of pastoral production and commodity systems for explicit South and North positionings. It develops and applies a new approach in combining agri-food, market and commodity chain perspectives with livelihood approaches. This enables new understandings of re-aligning exchange relations between the global south and the global north. The case studies presented open up new empirical insights in largely under-researched areas, such as Afghanistan, Chad, Tibet and Siberia and very recent changes in industrialized economies with major pastoral sectors. The book reveals new evidence and theoretical insights about significant changes in established producer-consumer relations in agriculture and food.

Book Political Ecologies of Meat

Download or read book Political Ecologies of Meat written by Jody Emel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-15 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Livestock production worldwide is increasing rapidly, in part due to economic growth and demand for meat in industrializing countries. Yet there are many concerns about the sustainability of increased meat production and consumption, from perspectives including human health, animal welfare, climate change and environmental pollution. This book tackles the key issues of contemporary meat production and consumption through a lens of political ecology, which emphasizes the power relations producing particular social, economic and cultural interactions with non-human nature. Three main topics are addressed: the political ecology of global livestock production trends; changes in production systems around the world and their implications for environmental justice; and existing and emerging governance strategies for meat production and consumption systems and their implications. Case studies of different systems at varying scales are included, drawn from Asia, Africa, the Americas and Europe. The book includes an editorial introduction to set the context and synthesize key messages for the reader.

Book Marketing of Sheep in Sudan An Economic Analysis

Download or read book Marketing of Sheep in Sudan An Economic Analysis written by Elsedig Elbadawi and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2014-03 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sudan is one of the largest exporters of sheep in Africa. However, the sheep marketing is still undeveloped due to lack of infrastructures such as extension services, roads and telecommunication, market information system, R&D and logistical supports. One of the major policy instruments that discourage innovations is the imposition of direct taxes on the producers and marketers at all level of marketing chains. This book aims to provide some insights on the marketing system of sheep in Sudan with a special focus on the production sector in the North Kordofan, Gadarif and Khartoum states in Sudan. Specifically, it intends to; (i) provide a better understanding of the existing sheep marketing system, (ii) identify key constraints and potentials, (iii) describe the marketing channels and margins and; (iv) measure the competitiveness and comparative advantage of the sheep industry using policy analysis matrix (PAM) framework. Based on the findings, this book recommend that there is a need to reorganize and shorten the marketing channel, to institute a price support for the supply of fodder, provide water and veterinary care, and waive income taxes on the farmers and traders.

Book Money Meat and Inflation

Download or read book Money Meat and Inflation written by Rodney Ramcharan and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sudanese inflation dramatically fell in 2000. But just prior to the sharp decline, an export ban was placed on Sudanese livestock. Motivated by this clue, and in the absence of any reliable income or employment data, this paper systematically develops simultaneous models of the consumer price index (CPI) and the exchange rate to assess the economic impact of the export ban. It finds that livestock exports play a large economic role as an important source of income and as a store of value. In the long run, livestock exports are positively associated with nonfood inflation. In the short run, food price movements are negatively associated with livestock exports: to help smooth income, lower food prices generate increased livestock exports. Therefore, unable to export livestock, farmers may have flooded the local market with meat, lowering food prices. Moreover, the loss of income and the decline in wealth lowered aggregate demand, leading to the decline in nonfood prices.

Book Sheep and Goats in Developing Countries

Download or read book Sheep and Goats in Developing Countries written by Winrock International Livestock Research and Training Center and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives of this study are to assess the role of small ruminants (sheep and goats) in the food production systems of developing countries, examine their advantages and disadvantages, analyze the constraints limiting their further contribution to the welfare of small farm/low income rural producers, prescribe measures for overcoming these constraints, and make recommendations related to potential donor involvement in support of the development of sheep and goat production. Small ruminants are viewed as an integral, but not dominant component of complex agricultural systems. Particular emphasis is placed on sheep and goats in mixed herds grazing dry rangelands and in small mixed farm systems in medium to high rainfall areas. An analysis of major constraints -- ecological, biological, policy, and socio-economic -- leads to recommendations on the need for a balanced production system approach for research, training and development programs, and for a combination of support activities such as herd health programs, and formulation of favorable credit, marketing and pricing policies for small ruminants and their products.
