Book Inductive Databases and Constraint Based Data Mining

Download or read book Inductive Databases and Constraint Based Data Mining written by Sašo Džeroski and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-11-18 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about inductive databases and constraint-based data mining, emerging research topics lying at the intersection of data mining and database research. The aim of the book as to provide an overview of the state-of- the art in this novel and - citing research area. Of special interest are the recent methods for constraint-based mining of global models for prediction and clustering, the uni?cation of pattern mining approaches through constraint programming, the clari?cation of the re- tionship between mining local patterns and global models, and the proposed in- grative frameworks and approaches for inducive databases. On the application side, applications to practically relevant problems from bioinformatics are presented. Inductive databases (IDBs) represent a database view on data mining and kno- edge discovery. IDBs contain not only data, but also generalizations (patterns and models) valid in the data. In an IDB, ordinary queries can be used to access and - nipulate data, while inductive queries can be used to generate (mine), manipulate, and apply patterns and models. In the IDB framework, patterns and models become ”?rst-class citizens” and KDD becomes an extended querying process in which both the data and the patterns/models that hold in the data are queried.

Book Proceedings of the Seventh SIAM International Conference on Data Mining

Download or read book Proceedings of the Seventh SIAM International Conference on Data Mining written by Chid Apte and published by Proceedings in Applied Mathema. This book was released on 2007 with total page 674 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Seventh SIAM International Conference on Data Mining (SDM 2007) continues a series of conferences whose focus is the theory and application of data mining to complex datasets in science, engineering, biomedicine, and the social sciences. These datasets challenge our abilities to analyze them because they are large and often noisy. Sophisticated, highperformance, and principled analysis techniques and algorithms, based on sound statistical foundations, are required. Visualization is often critically important; tuning for performance is a significant challenge; and the appropriate levels of abstraction to allow end-users to exploit sophisticated techniques and understand clearly both the constraints and interpretation of results are still something of an open question.

Book Content Addressable Memories

Download or read book Content Addressable Memories written by T. Kohonen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designers and users of computer systems have long been aware of the fact that inclusion of some kind of content-addressable or "associative" functions in the storage and retrieval mechanisms would allow a more effective and straightforward organization of data than with the usual addressed memories, with the result that the computing power would be significantly increased. However, although the basic principles of content-addressing have been known for over twenty years, the hardware content-addressable memories (CAMs) have found their way only to special roles such as small buffer memories and con trol units. This situation now seems to be changing: Because of the develop ment of new technologies such as very-large-scale integration of semiconduc tor circuits, charge-coupled devices, magnetic-bubble memories, and certain devices based on quantum-mechanical effects, an increasing amount of active searching functions can be transferred to memory units. The prices of the more complex memory components which earlier were too high to allow the application of these principles to mass memories will be reduced to a fraction of the to tal system costs, and this will certainly have a significant impact on the new computer architectures. In order to advance the new memory principles and technologies, more in formation ought to be made accessible to a common user.

Book Formal Concept Analysis

Download or read book Formal Concept Analysis written by Raoul Medina and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-02-15 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Formal Concept Analysis (FCA) is a mathematical theory of concepts and c- ceptualhierarchyleadingtomethodsforconceptuallyanalyzingdataandkno- edge. The theoryitselfstronglyreliesonorderandlatticetheory, whichhasbeen studied by mathematicians over decades. FCA proved itself highly relevant in several applications from the beginning, and, over the last years, the range of applicationshaskeptgrowing. The mainreasonfor this comesfromthe fact that our modern society has turned into an “information” society. After years and years of using computers, companies realized they had stored gigantic amounts of data. Then, they realized that this data, just rough information for them, might become a real treasure if turned into knowledge. FCA is particularly well suited for this purpose. From relational data, FCA can extract implications, - pendencies, concepts and hierarchies of concepts, and thus capture part of the knowledge hidden in the data. The ICFCA conference series gathers researchers from all over the world, being the main forum to present new results in FCA and related ?elds. These results range from theoretical novelties to advances in FCA-related algorithmic issues, as well as application domains of FCA. ICFCA 2008 was in the same vein as its predecessors: high-quality papers and presentations, the place of real debate and exchange of ideas. ICFCA 2008 contributed to strengthening the links between theory and applications. The high quality of the presentations was the result of the remarkable work of the authors and the reviewers. We wish to thank the reviewers for all their valuable comments, which helped the authors to improve their presentations.

Book Pattern Detection and Discovery

Download or read book Pattern Detection and Discovery written by David J Hand and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-08-02 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collation of large electronic databases of scienti?c and commercial infor- tion has led to a dramatic growth of interest in methods for discovering struc- res in such databases. These methods often go under the general name of data mining. One important subdiscipline within data mining is concerned with the identi?cation and detection of anomalous, interesting, unusual, or valuable - cords or groups of records, which we call patterns. Familiar examples are the detection of fraud in credit-card transactions, of particular coincident purchases in supermarket transactions, of important nucleotide sequences in gene sequence analysis, and of characteristic traces in EEG records. Tools for the detection of such patterns have been developed within the data mining community, but also within other research communities, typically without an awareness that the - sic problem was common to many disciplines. This is not unreasonable: each of these disciplines has a large literature of its own, and a literature which is growing rapidly. Keeping up with any one of these is di?cult enough, let alone keeping up with others as well, which may in any case be couched in an - familiar technical language. But, of course, this means that opportunities are being lost, discoveries relating to the common problem made in one area are not transferred to the other area, and breakthroughs and problem solutions are being rediscovered, or not discovered for a long time, meaning that e?ort is being wasted and opportunities may be lost.
