Download or read book The General Chapter in a Religious Institute written by Elizabeth M. Cotter and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the historical antecedents of the concept of general chapter, the supreme authority in an institute of consecrated life. This provides the basis for an examination of the contemporary understanding of the nature of its power and authority, as portrayed in the 1983 Code of Canon Law. The general chapter is analysed in terms of its juridic status, collegial nature, participative character and representative function as well as its dynamic aspects and faith dimension. The author applies the findings to one institute of consecrated life, Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary Loreto Branch. This application provides an example of the challenges inherent in working participatively and collaboratively within a hierarchical structure. Because consecrated life has an inalienable ecclesial dimension, understanding authority and power and their exercise in institutes of consecrated life has relevance for understanding authority and its exercise in other organs of authority at all levels in the church.

Download or read book The Impact of Vatican II on Women Religious written by Louise O’Reilly and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2013-08-19 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book opens up a new area of research in the history of the institution of the Irish Presentation Sisters and the impact of Vatican II, 1962–1965 on women religious life in Ireland. The challenges offered by the Council were taken on by the Presentation Congregation and resulted in a trans-national structure known today as the ‘Union of Presentation Sisters’. In the latter half of the twentieth century, Vatican II called for the need for ‘adaptation’ and ‘renewal’ of religious life. This involved not just changes within the structures of religious life, but also meant that, psychologically, religious needed to change how and what they thought religious life in the twentieth century should be. The traditions of centuries had to be examined in the context of the ‘modern’ twentieth-century world and had to adapt to this change. However, the scope of the work is wide-ranging as it also examines issues that surrounded the transformation experienced by the Presentation Sisters. These included relations with the Church at both diocesan level and international level. In their efforts to implement change, they were often hampered by the local Bishops in Ireland but were supported by the Church in Rome. This book explores the whole area of women religious life in Ireland in the post-Vatican II period and examines the implications of these changes in relation to women religious and the Church.

Download or read book Marialis Cultus written by Holiness Paul and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-01-02 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marialis Cultus is the title of a Mariological Apostolic Exhortation by Pope Paul VI on February 2, 1974. It is subtitled: "For the Right Ordering and Development of Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary," and focuses Marian devotions, clarifiying the way in which the Roman Catholic Church celebrates and commemorates Mary, the mother of Jesus. The preparation of the document reportedly took 4 years. The exhortation has three parts: Part 1 discusses the history of Catholicism's Marian devotions, as well as their rationale. Part 2 focuses on what should/will take place in the Church's Marian devotions in the future Part 3 touches on the Angelus and the Rosary prayers. Marialis Cultus gives guidelines for devotions to Mary by the Church - that is, it attempts to make sure that all Marian liturgical celebrations and public expressions of devotion align with established doctrine. It noted that every element of the church's prayer life, including Marian devotions, should draw its inspiration from the Bible and harmonize with the liturgy. The conclusion to the document emphasizes the theological and pastoral value of devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Download or read book My Hennessy Family History and Memoir written by Sister Lucy Hennessy SMG and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2018-10-26 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sister Lucy Hennessy, a member of the Servants of the Mother of God, became interested in her family history after her parents died. With both of them gone, she wanted to connect with the relatives that walked the roads she walked, prayed in the church she prayed in, and who, in some cases, went to the school she attended. What were their names? Where were they born? What were their hopes and dreams? She explores those questions and more in this family history, revealing a hardworking, Irish-Catholic family who lovingly and courageously passed on the deeds of the Lord, His power, and the wonders He has done. They toiled and labored in difficult times and lived out their lives doing routine tasks. They were men and women like us who lived ordinary lives and struggled with ordinary problems – and in some cases, very difficult problems. This book presents a history, including documents and photos, of the author’s parents (Patrick Reardon Hennessy and Annie Murphy Donovan), their parents and grandparents, and sketches of other family members. Pause and reflect on your own family and its wonderful history as the author delves into the past to reveal the glory of God.

Download or read book The Oxford History of British and Irish Catholicism written by Liam Chambers and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-10 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third volume of The Oxford History of British and Irish Catholicism examines the period from the defeat of the Jacobite army at the battle of Culloden in 1746 to the enactment of Catholic emancipation in 1829. The first part of the volume offers a chronological overview tracing the decline of Jacobitism, the easing of penal legislation which targeted Catholics, the complex impact of the French Revolution, the debates about the place of Catholics in the post-Union state, and - following the mass mobilisation of Irish Catholics - the passage of emancipation. The second part of the volume shows that this political history can only be properly understood with reference to the broader transformations that occurred in the later eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The period witnessed the expansion of Catholic infrastructure (pastoral structures, chapel building, elementary education and finances) and changes in Catholic practice, for example in liturgy and devotion. The growing infrastructure and more public profession of Catholicism occurred in a society where anti-Catholicism remained a force, but the volume also addresses the accommodations and interactions with non-Catholics that attended daily life. Crucially, the transformations of this period were international, as well as national. The volume examines the British and Irish convents, colleges, friaries and monasteries on the continent, especially during the events of the 1790s when many institutions closed and successor or new ones emerged at home. The international dimensions of British and Irish Catholicism extended beyond Europe too as the British Empire expanded globally, and attention is given to the involvement of British and Irish Catholics in imperial expansion. This volume addresses the literary, intellectual and cultural expressions of Catholicism in Britain and Ireland. Catholics produced a rich literature in English, Irish, Scots Gaelic and Welsh, although the volume shows the disparities in provision. They also engaged with and participated in the Catholic Enlightenment, particularly as they grappled with the challenges of accommodation to a Protestant constitution. This also had consequences for the public expression of Catholicism and the volume concludes by exploring the shifting expression of belief through music and material culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Regimes of Happiness' is a comparative and historical analysis of how human societies have articulated and enacted distinctive notions of human fulfillment, determining divergent moral, ethical and religious traditions, and incommensurate and conflicting understanding of the meaning of the ‘good life’. A two-part book, it provides a historical view of the way in which Western societies, the descendants of the Latin Roman Empire, created languages and institutions that established specifi c and occasionally antithetical conceptions of a fulfilled human life or ‘happiness’ in the first part. In the second part, it explores how non-Western societies and non-Christian religions have conceived and established their own ideals of human perfection. 'Regimes of Happiness' is a critical reflection on modern notions of happiness which are typically focused on individual feelings of pleasure.
