S., At Loysville, Perry County, Pa This was the work of Christianity which has the honor of origi nating Asylums and Homes for the distressed. The love of Him who redeemed this orphaned world has taught it to be a promi nent duty of the Christian to care for and visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction; and so the Orphan Houses of Halle and Bristol came to be such blessings. It was the same spirit that established the Tressler Orphans' Home at Loysville, Pa. The history of this Institution is one of recent events, but it embraces at the same time the story of preparations made by Providence farther back than the Revolutionary war. The brick academy building at Loysville occasioned the suggestion to place an orphan school there, but the occasional services in Sherman's Valley, amid Indian war-hoops and murder, was fol lowed up by pastors from neighboring places until a regular charge, about 1788, was formed, from whose band arose intelligent members such as Col. John Tressler, who built near the Lutheran Church at Loysville the academy which was destined to be the chief part of the Orphans' Home.
