Book Constant Mean Curvature Surfaces in Homogeneous Manifolds

Download or read book Constant Mean Curvature Surfaces in Homogeneous Manifolds written by Julia Plehnert and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2012 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this dissertation new constant mean curvature surfaces in homogeneous 3-manifolds are constructed. They arise as sister surfaces of Plateau solutions. The first example, a two-parameter family of MC H surfaces in ∑(k) x R with H ∈ [0,1/2] and k + 4H2 ≤ 0, has genus 0,2 k ends and k-fold dihedral symmetry, k ≥ 2. The existence of the minimal sister follows from the construction of a mean convex domain. The projection of the domain is non-convex. The second example is an MC 1/2 surface in H2 ∈ R with k ends, genus 1 and k-fold dihedral symmetry, k ≥ 3. One has to solve two period problems in the construction. The first period guarantees that the surface has exactly one horizontal symmetry. For the second period the control of a horizontal mirror curve proves the dihedral symmetry. For H=1/2 all surfaces are Alexandrov-embedded.

Book Prescribing the Curvature of a Riemannian Manifold

Download or read book Prescribing the Curvature of a Riemannian Manifold written by Jerry L. Kazdan and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1985-12-31 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These notes were the basis for a series of ten lectures given in January 1984 at Polytechnic Institute of New York under the sponsorship of the Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences and the National Science Foundation. The lectures were aimed at mathematicians who knew either some differential geometry or partial differential equations, although others could understand the lectures. Author's Summary:Given a Riemannian Manifold $(M,g)$ one can compute the sectional, Ricci, and scalar curvatures. In other special circumstances one also has mean curvatures, holomorphic curvatures, etc. The inverse problem is, given a candidate for some curvature, to determine if there is some metric $g$ with that as its curvature. One may also restrict ones attention to a special class of metrics, such as Kahler or conformal metrics, or those coming from an embedding. These problems lead one to (try to) solve nonlinear partial differential equations. However, there may be topological or analytic obstructions to solving these equations. A discussion of these problems thus requires a balanced understanding between various existence and non-existence results. The intent of this volume is to give an up-to-date survey of these questions, including enough background, so that the current research literature is accessible to mathematicians who are not necessarily experts in PDE or differential geometry. The intended audience is mathematicians and graduate students who know either PDE or differential geometry at roughly the level of an intermediate graduate course.

Book New Trends in Geometric Analysis

Download or read book New Trends in Geometric Analysis written by Antonio Alarcón and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-11-25 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to provide an overview of some of the progress made by the Spanish Network of Geometric Analysis (REAG, by its Spanish acronym) since its born in 2007. REAG was created with the objective of enabling the interchange of ideas and the knowledge transfer between several Spanish groups having Geometric Analysis as a common research line. This includes nine groups at Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Universidad de Granada, Universidad Jaume I de Castellón, Universidad de Murcia, Universidad de Santiago de Compostela and Universidad de Valencia. The success of REAG has been substantiated with regular meetings and the publication of research papers obtained in collaboration between the members of different nodes. On the occasion of the 15th anniversary of REAG this book aims to collect some old and new contributions of this network to Geometric Analysis. The book consists of thirteen independent chapters, all of them authored by current members of REAG. The topics under study cover geometric flows, constant mean curvature surfaces in Riemannian and sub-Riemannian spaces, integral geometry, potential theory and Riemannian geometry, among others. Some of these chapters have been written in collaboration between members of different nodes of the network, and show the fruitfulness of the common research atmosphere provided by REAG. The rest of the chapters survey a research line or present recent progresses within a group of those forming REAG. Surveying several research lines and offering new directions in the field, the volume is addressed to researchers (including postdocs and PhD students) in Geometric Analysis in the large.

Book Total Mean Curvature And Submanifolds Of Finite Type

Download or read book Total Mean Curvature And Submanifolds Of Finite Type written by Bang-yen Chen and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 1984-04-01 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to introduce the reader to two interesting topics in geometry which have developed over the last fifteen years, namely, total mean curvature and submanifolds of finite type. The theory of total mean curvature is the study of the integral of the n-th power of the mean curvature of a compact n-dimensional submanifold in a Euclidean m-space and its applications to other branches of mathematics. The relation of total mean curvature to analysis, geometry and topology are discussed in detail. Motivated from these studies, the author introduces and studies submanifolds of finite type in the last chapter. Some applications of such submanifolds are also given. This book is self-contained. The author hopes that the reader will be encouraged to pursue his studies beyond the confines of the present book.

Book Riemannian Manifolds and Homogeneous Geodesics

Download or read book Riemannian Manifolds and Homogeneous Geodesics written by Valerii Berestovskii and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-05 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to Killing vector fields and the one-parameter isometry groups of Riemannian manifolds generated by them. It also provides a detailed introduction to homogeneous geodesics, that is, geodesics that are integral curves of Killing vector fields, presenting both classical and modern results, some very recent, many of which are due to the authors. The main focus is on the class of Riemannian manifolds with homogeneous geodesics and on some of its important subclasses. To keep the exposition self-contained the book also includes useful general results not only on geodesic orbit manifolds, but also on smooth and Riemannian manifolds, Lie groups and Lie algebras, homogeneous Riemannian manifolds, and compact homogeneous Riemannian spaces. The intended audience is graduate students and researchers whose work involves differential geometry and transformation groups.

Book Homogeneous Manifolds with Negative Curvature Part II

Download or read book Homogeneous Manifolds with Negative Curvature Part II written by Robert Azencott and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1976 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper is the second in a series dealing with the structure of the full isometry group I(M) for M a connected, simply connected, homogeneous, Riemannian manifold with non-positive sectional curvature. It is shown that every such manifold determines canonically a conjugacy class of subgroups of I(M) which act simply transitively on M. The class of all simply transitive subgroups of I(M) is identified and it is demonstrated that an arbitrary simply transitive subgroup may be modified slightly to produce a subgroup in the canonical class. The class of all connected Lie groups G for which there exists such a manifold M with G isomorphic to the identity connected component of I(M) is identified by means of a list of structural conditions on the Lie algebra of G. Given an arbitrary connected, simply connected Riemannian manifold M together with a given simply transitive group S of isometries, an algorithm is exhibited to explicitly compute the Lie algebra of I(M) from the transported Riemannian data on S.

Book Two Reports On Harmonic Maps

Download or read book Two Reports On Harmonic Maps written by James Eells and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1995-03-29 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harmonic maps between Riemannian manifolds are solutions of systems of nonlinear partial differential equations which appear in different contexts of differential geometry. They include holomorphic maps, minimal surfaces, σ-models in physics. Recently, they have become powerful tools in the study of global properties of Riemannian and Kählerian manifolds.A standard reference for this subject is a pair of Reports, published in 1978 and 1988 by James Eells and Luc Lemaire. This book presents these two reports in a single volume with a brief supplement reporting on some recent developments in the theory. It is both an introduction to the subject and a unique source of references, providing an organized exposition of results spread throughout more than 800 papers.
