Book Consolidation Analyses of Soils

Download or read book Consolidation Analyses of Soils written by Jian-Hua Yin and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-12-28 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When stresses are applied to saturated soil, deformation will occur as water in voids is squeezed out. Consolidation Analyses of Soils focuses on the consolidation of fully saturated soils. The book follows a classic approach by beginning with one-dimensional constitutive relations of soils and one-dimensional consolidation. It then moves on to analytical solutions to several one-dimensional consolidation problems and one-dimensional finite strain consolidation. The authors also present a finite element method for consolidation analysis of one-dimensional problems, analytical solutions to consolidation of soil with vertical drains, and a finite difference method for consolidation analysis of one-dimensional problems. Simplified methods for consolidation analysis of soils exhibiting creep are introduced and applied to different cases. Three-dimensional consolidation equations and solutions of typical three-dimensional consolidation problems are covered, as well as simplified finite element consolidation analysis of soils with vertical drain and finite element method for three-dimensional consolidation problems. The book is unique in that it covers both classic solutions and state-of-the-art work in consolidation analyses of soils. Authors Jian-Hua Yin is Chair Professor of Soil Mechanics in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Guofu Zhu is a Professor in the Department of Engineering Structures and Mechanics at Wuhan University of Technology, China.

Book Analysis and Prediction of Soil Behaviour

Download or read book Analysis and Prediction of Soil Behaviour written by T. S. Nagaraj and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 1994 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Book Brings Out The Possibilities Of Generalizations Of Behaviour Of Soils And Hence Of Predicting The Required Engineering Properties Without Elaborate Testing. We Recognize That A Single Approach Cannot Be Evolved For All Soil Types And Hence The Necessity For Classifying Soils Into Different Categories And To Use Appropriate Model For Each. First Of All, Based On Mechanism Of Stress Transfer And Interaction Between The Phases, Two Obvious Classes, The Fine Grained And Coarse-Grained Soils Have Been Differentiated. The Discussions Bring Out That Because Of Identical Mode Of Stress Transfer, The Mechanical Behaviour I.E., Compressibility, Shear Strength Relations, Permeability Variations Etc. Can Be Generalized For All Fine Grained Soils, Enabling The Prediction Of Behaviour Of Such Soils With Just The Knowledge Of Certain State And Index Properties. The Sequence Of Discussion Is On The Characterization Of Specific Soil States And Prediction Of Proportion Starting From The Ideal Saturated Uncemented Soils, Both Normally And Over Consolidated, Cemented Saturated Soils And Partly Saturated Soils. In Dealing With The Behaviour Of Coarse Grained Soils, The Importance Of Microfabric And The Difficulties In Possible Generalizations Are Discussed. Perhaps The Unique Feature Of This Book Is That The Division Of The Chapters Is Based On Different Soil States, All The Mechanical Behaviours Being Discussed Under Each Soil State. The Book Will Be Of Interest To Both Academicians And Practising Engineers, Researchers And Postgraduate Students. It Would Serve As A Textbook For Undergraduate Students With Prior Knowledge Of Basic Soil Mechanics.

Book excerpt: An essential guide to improving preliminary geotechnical analysis and design from limited data Soil Properties and their Correlations, Second Edition provides a summary of commonly-used soil engineering properties and gives a wide range of correlations between the various properties, presented in the context of how they will be used in geotechnical design. The book is divided into 11 chapters: Commonly-measured properties; Grading and plasticity; Density; Permeability, Consolidation and settlement; Shear strength; California bearing ratio; Shrinkage and swelling characteristics; Frost susceptibility; Susceptibility to combustion; and Soil-structure interfaces. In addition, there are two appendices: Soil classification systems; and Sampling methods. This new, more comprehensive, edition provides material that would be of practical assistance to those faced with the problem of having to estimate soil behaviour from little or no laboratory test data. Key features: Soil properties explained in practical terms. A large number of correlations between different soil properties. A valuable aid for assessing design values of properties. Clear statements on practical limitations and accuracy. An invaluable source of reference for experienced professionals working on geotechnical design, it will also give students and early-career engineers an in-depth appreciation of the appropriate use of each property and the pitfalls to avoid.

Book Soil Mechanics

    Book Details:
  • Author : David Muir Wood
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2009-09-28
  • ISBN : 0521517737
  • Pages : 251 pages

Download or read book Soil Mechanics written by David Muir Wood and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-09-28 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This introductory course on soil mechanics presents the key concepts of stress, stiffness, seepage, consolidation, and strength within a one-dimensional framework. Consideration of the mechanical behaviour of soils requires us to consider density alongside stresses, thus permitting the unification of deformation and strength characteristics. Soils are described in a way which can be integrated with concurrent teaching of the properties of other engineering materials. The book includes a model of the shearing of soil and some examples of soil-structure interaction which are capable of theoretical analysis using one-dimensional governing equations. The text contains many worked examples, and exercises are given for private study at the end of all chapters. Some suggestions for laboratory demonstrations that could accompany such an introductory course are sprinkled through the book." --Book Jacket.
