Excerpt: ... say that all such experiences must be hallucinatory. The logical implication of a thorough-going theory of hallucination is that only sense impressions are possible to men, although these may be either true or false. By definition a hallucination is a "perception of objects with no reality, or experience of sensations with no external cause." To explain all experiences in which men have felt that they have come into immediate contact with God as hallucinations is equivalent to saying either that there is no God who can come into immediate contact with men, or that if there is a God he does not come into immediate contact with men. In other words, if there is a God who comes into immediate contact with men, then some of these experiences are not hallucinations. It may be pointed out in this connection that the conclusion arrived at by very careful and critical treatment of the results of the only extensive census of hallucinations ever made was that hallucinations of the presence of human beings were "veridical," i. e., correspond to some demonstrable fact, 440 times as often as they might be expected to do on the laws of chance. This should be kept in mind in forming a final judgment as to the explanation of the phenomena we are investigating.29 B. Psychological Theories. 1. Automatisms: Self-hypnosis: Extatic Intoxication. The consideration of the theory of hallucination leads by a natural and easy transition to the consideration of the first of the definitely psychological theories in explanation of such experiences as we are studying, the theory of automatisms. The theory of automatisms underlies most of the other psychological explanations and itself leads easily to, and to some extent implies, theories of the subconscious. Coe gives...

Book The Image of God and the Psychology of Religion

Download or read book The Image of God and the Psychology of Religion written by Richard L Dayringer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-04-03 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the implications of a client’s image of God? Improve your confidence—and your practice skills—by enhancing your knowledge of how individuals are likely to perceive God, and of how those perceptions impact the way they function as human beings. Theologians have long speculated and theorized about how humans imagine God to be. This book merges theology with science, presenting empirical research focused on perceptions of God in a variety of populations living in community and mental health settings. Each chapter concludes with references that comprise an essential reading list, and the book is generously enhanced with tables that make data easy to access and understand. “Liberating Images of God” discusses the constriction and impoverishment of God images due to the traditional restrictions of God images to those that are male and personified. This chapter examines the potential for the client and counselor’s co-creation of images of God which embrace the feminine as well as the masculine, the nurturer as well as the warrior, and the natural world in all its dimensions as well as the human world, to liberate, enrich, sustain, and transform the client’s relationships with God and with him/herself. “Attachment, Well-Being, and Religious Participation Among People with Severe Mental Disorders” examines the relationship between attachment states of mind and religious participation among people diagnosed with severe mental illness. “Concepts of God and Therapeutic Alliance Among People with Severe Mental Disorders” explores the transferential aspects of God representation among severely mentally ill adults. It highlights research on the relationship between a patient’s image of God and that patient’s working relationship with his/her case manager, and discusses the implications for clinical practice of those findings. “The Subjective Experience of God” presents a theory about the psychological basis for the experience of God that argues that this experience is essentially a form of projection and as such is an internal event that does not exist independent of an individual’s psyche. This chapter draws a distinction between faith in a particular belief—namely, faith in the existence of a loving, omnipotent God—and an attitude of faith, which is the basis for experiences of transcendence. “Relationship of Gender Role Identity and Attitudes” presents the results of a study in which nearly 300 Catholic attendees at three university Catholic centers completed the Bern Sex Role Inventory, the Attitudes Toward Women Scale, and the Perceptions of God Checklist. This chapter looks at images of God as masculine or feminine, and at the connection for people between the way they perceive God and the way they relate towards men and women. “Reflections on a Study in a Mental Hospital,” brings you groundbreaking new research on perceptions of God in an inpatient population. This chapter examines the positive effects (as opposed to the negative effects previously portrayed by the psychological community) of religious belief and practice for residential care patients in a psychiatric hospital.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you think that there is some new truth to be learned humanly, you will be disappointed because there is not a single new truth in the entire world. The truth revealed in this book is not my truth or my message, but the word of God which has been imparting itself to universal consciousness throughout all time. That word of God is already embodied in your consciousness, and this truth, which is already your consciousness, is now being unveiled to you within you. Unless God is my consciousness, there will be no truth expressing itself through, or as, me; and, moreover, unless God is your consciousness, you will not understand the truth that is being presented. But, since God is universal consciousness and since God is my consciousness, truth is expressing itself as this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religious Consciousness: A Psychological Study I have also sought to cover the field with a fair degree of adequacy; to do justice by both religion and science; to hold the scales even between the individual and society (no easy matter in these days); and to make my book of value and (if possible) of interest to both the general reader and the technical student. I am, of course, painfully aware of the fact that in many ways I have fallen short of my aims. It is now over twelve years ago that I began writing the book; and in that length of time so many changes come over one's evaluations and one's style that in looking through the completed volume I can plainly see (though I hope the reader will not) several distinct strata of thought and language superimposed upon each other. Book Who Knows

Download or read book Who Knows written by Raymond M. Smullyan and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is there really a God, and if so, what is God actually like? Is there an afterlife, and if so, is there such a thing as eternal punishment for unrepentant sinners, as many orthodox Christians and Muslims believe? And is it really true that our unconscious minds are connected to a higher spiritual reality, and if so, could this higher spiritual reality be the very same thing that religionists call "God"? In his latest book, Raymond M. Smullyan invites the reader to explore some beautiful and some horrible.
