Book excerpt: Lung cancer has seen a paradigm shift in disease treatment over the past few years, with major changes in the therapeutic drugs now available as well as in the overall management approach. For targeted and immunotherapeutic approaches, understanding the biology of acquired resistance is a key strategy that has yielded productive advances in the subsequent treatment. Future advances also include incorporating biomarker data obtained from solid and liquid biopsies, as well as combination of immunotherapy with radiotherapy and in special populations such patients with CNS involvement.

Book excerpt: Lung cancer researchers are on the march. They made significant discoveries in 2004 leading to improved understanding of what causes the disease, new ways to treat it, and even in some new ways to cure it. Survival rates are improving, although modestly, because what researchers are passing along to the doctors who screen for, diagnose and treat lung cancer. Of course, thereâs still a long way to go. Lung Cancer Update is a monthly newsletter that reports significant findings in lung cancer research and treatment in language understandable to lay persons. This book is a compendium of important milestones in lung cancer research and treatment reported in Lung Cancer Update in 2004. In it, youâll find stories about new drug discoveries, what weâre learning about the role of various genes in causing lung cancer and practical advice on what you can do to reduce your risk of getting it or succumbing to it. The stories are coveniently indexed so you can go right to the questions about current lung cancer research and treatment findings that are of direct interest to you.The book was edited by Noel Griese, who in addition to serving as editor of Lung Cancer Update newsletter, has written three other books about cancer, New Hope: Avoiding Lung Cancer, Conquering Cancer: Progress in 2004 and Kathieâs Story: Misdiagnosed with Lung Cancer. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Defining the Lung Cancer Problem 1 Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the world. It kills almost as many Americans as cancers of the breast, prostate, colon, rectum, pancreas, and 2 kidney combined, and accounts for 28.6% of all US cancer deaths. With an increase in the 5-year relative survival rate from 13% to only 16% in the more than 2 30 years from 1974 to the present, it will take us another 840 years to eradicate lung cancer deaths if we do not improve the current rate of progress. As discussed in this text, lung cancer prevention has received substantial att- tion. The decrease in smoking in recent decades has helped, but smoking is not the only problem. Lung cancer in people who have never smoked is currently the 5th 3 leading cause of cancer death in the United States. Several factors contribute to the lethality of lung cancer, including the rapidity of tumor growth, advanced stage at diagnosis (due to nonspecificity of early sy- toms and the uncertain efficacy of screening), early development of metastases, and resistance to therapy. Several chapters in this book discuss new molecular targets that may be potentially exploitable in the future, as well as discussing our track record to date in exploiting them.

These people may never have questioned their oncologists, believing that they were in the best possible hands with their physicians’ advanced education, their knowledge of the latest treatments, and all the tools of modern research at their disposals. In Overcoming Cancer, Gary Null explores the alternative treatments that most mainstream doctors will never discuss with their patients. Did you know that eating melons balances your body’s pH, which can help slow the growth of cancer? You were aware that fiber is an important part of a healthy diet, but did you know that it lowers the risk of breast, colorectal, uterine, and prostate cancers? Find health and vitality with Dr. Null’s five most powerful tools for fighting cancer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CONQUERING CANCER: THE FIGHT FOR A CURE INTRODUCTION TO CANCER: UNDERSTANDING THE DISEASE Cancer is a complex and devastating disease that affects millions of people worldwide. It is caused by abnormal growth and division of cells in the body, which can lead to the formation of tumors and the spread of cancer cells to other parts of the body. Cancer can occur in any part of the body and can affect people of all ages, genders, and ethnicities. There are many different types of cancer, each with its own set of characteristics and treatment options. Some of the most common types include breast cancer, lung cancer, prostate cancer, and colorectal cancer. Other types of cancer, such as leukemia and lymphoma, involve the blood and immune systems. The development of cancer is a multi-step process that can take many years. It begins with genetic mutations in the DNA of cells, which can be caused by a variety of factors such as exposure to certain chemicals or radiation, viral infections, or inherited genetic mutations. These mutations lead to the activation of certain genes that promote the growth and division of cells, eventually leading to the formation of a tumor. The spread of cancer cells from the primary tumor to other parts of the body is known as metastasis. This can occur through the blood and lymph systems, as well as through direct invasion of surrounding tissues. Once cancer cells have spread to distant parts of the body, they can form secondary tumors and continue to grow and divide. Cancer can cause a wide range of symptoms, depending on the type and stage of the disease. Common symptoms include fatigue, weight loss, pain, and changes in the skin. Many people with cancer also experience emotional and psychological distress, including anxiety and depression. Diagnosis of cancer typically begins with a physical examination and a review of the patient's medical history. Imaging tests such as X-rays, CT scans, and MRI scans can help detect tumors and determine their size and location. Biopsy, a procedure in which a sample of tissue is taken for examination under a microscope, is often used to confirm the diagnosis of cancer and to identify the specific type of cancer cells present. Treatment for cancer is tailored to the individual patient and the stage of the disease. Surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy are among the most common treatments for cancer. Targeted therapies and immunotherapies are newer treatment options that are showing promise in certain types of cancer. In addition, supportive care, such as pain management and psychological counseling, is an important aspect of cancer care.

Book A Global Scientific VisionPrevention Diagnosis and Treatment of Lung Cancer

Download or read book A Global Scientific VisionPrevention Diagnosis and Treatment of Lung Cancer written by Marta Adonis and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2017-03-01 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lung cancer is the number one cause of cancer deaths around the world. This devastating disease takes strength not only in people who smoke but also in poor people that eat polluted food and use heating sources, and in those exposed naturally to toxic compounds present in indoor and outdoor environments. Lung cancer patients and their families wait actions from the science that give not only answer to their demands but also a light of hope at the moment of receiveing the diagnosis. This book meets the experience of several researchers who dedicate many hours a day to find not only the cure of lung cancer but also the way to convert the pathology of this chronic disease. In 12 chapters, the lectures will give information related to the relationship of lung cancer and smoking habit, the crucial role of the image technology for diagnosis of lung cancer, and a molecular vision of prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of lung cancer. The authors with a clinic and/or lab vision and with a great spirit to collaborate with the science and with each past, present, and future patient and their families have dedicated many hours to write each chapter. Probably, the final answer to find the cure of lung cancer is not in this book. However, the lectures will give scientific information that will contribute in the near future improvement to the life quality of the patients.
