Book Conjugacy Classes in Semisimple Algebraic Groups

Download or read book Conjugacy Classes in Semisimple Algebraic Groups written by James E. Humphreys and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1995 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides a useful exposition of results on the structure of semisimple algebraic groups over an arbitrary algebraically closed field. After the fundamental work of Borel and Chevalley in the 1950s and 1960s, further results were obtained over the next thirty years on conjugacy classes and centralizers of elements of such groups.

Book Conjugacy Classes in Lie Algebras and Algebraic Groups

Download or read book Conjugacy Classes in Lie Algebras and Algebraic Groups written by R. W Richardson (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kostant has shown that a complex semi-simple Lie algebra has only a finite number of nilpotent conjugacy classes. This paper shows how Kostant's theorem can be obtained as a special case of an elementary theorem on conjugacy classes in reductive subgroups of algebrais subgroups. As a corollary of this theorem we show that a semi-simple algebrais group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p> 5 has only a finite number of unipotent conjugacy classes. Related conjugacy theorems are proved for subalgebras and homomorphisms of Lie algebras. (Author).

Book Unipotent and Nilpotent Classes in Simple Algebraic Groups and Lie Algebras

Download or read book Unipotent and Nilpotent Classes in Simple Algebraic Groups and Lie Algebras written by Martin W. Liebeck and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2012-01-25 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book concerns the theory of unipotent elements in simple algebraic groups over algebraically closed or finite fields, and nilpotent elements in the corresponding simple Lie algebras. These topics have been an important area of study for decades, with applications to representation theory, character theory, the subgroup structure of algebraic groups and finite groups, and the classification of the finite simple groups. The main focus is on obtaining full information on class representatives and centralizers of unipotent and nilpotent elements. Although there is a substantial literature on this topic, this book is the first single source where such information is presented completely in all characteristics. In addition, many of the results are new--for example, those concerning centralizers of nilpotent elements in small characteristics. Indeed, the whole approach, while using some ideas from the literature, is novel, and yields many new general and specific facts concerning the structure and embeddings of centralizers.

Book Cohomology for Quantum Groups via the Geometry of the Nullcone

Download or read book Cohomology for Quantum Groups via the Geometry of the Nullcone written by Christopher P. Bendel and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2014-04-07 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In general, little is known about the representation theory of quantum groups (resp., algebraic groups) when l (resp., p ) is smaller than the Coxeter number h of the underlying root system. For example, Lusztig's conjecture concerning the characters of the rational irreducible G -modules stipulates that p=h. The main result in this paper provides a surprisingly uniform answer for the cohomology algebra H (u ? ,C) of the small quantum group.

Book Algebraic Quotients Torus Actions and Cohomology The Adjoint Representation and the Adjoint Action

Download or read book Algebraic Quotients Torus Actions and Cohomology The Adjoint Representation and the Adjoint Action written by A. Bialynicki-Birula and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second volume of the new subseries "Invariant Theory and Algebraic Transformation Groups". The aim of the survey by A. Bialynicki-Birula is to present the main trends and achievements of research in the theory of quotients by actions of algebraic groups. This theory contains geometric invariant theory with various applications to problems of moduli theory. The contribution by J. Carrell treats the subject of torus actions on algebraic varieties, giving a detailed exposition of many of the cohomological results one obtains from having a torus action with fixed points. Many examples, such as toric varieties and flag varieties, are discussed in detail. W.M. McGovern studies the actions of a semisimple Lie or algebraic group on its Lie algebra via the adjoint action and on itself via conjugation. His contribution focuses primarily on nilpotent orbits that have found the widest application to representation theory in the last thirty-five years.

Book Forty Years Of Algebraic Groups Algebraic Geometry And Representation Theory In China In Memory Of The Centenary Year Of Xihua Cao s Birth

Download or read book Forty Years Of Algebraic Groups Algebraic Geometry And Representation Theory In China In Memory Of The Centenary Year Of Xihua Cao s Birth written by Jie Du and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2022-10-21 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Xihua Cao (1920-2005) was a leading scholar at East China Normal University (ECNU) and a famous algebraist in China. His contribution to the Chinese academic circle is particularly the formation of a world-renowned 'ECNU School' in algebra, covering research areas include algebraic groups, quantum groups, algebraic geometry, Lie algebra, algebraic number theory, representation theory and other hot fields. In January 2020, in order to commemorate Professor Xihua Cao's centenary birthday, East China Normal University held a three-day academic conference. Scholars at home and abroad gave dedications or delivered lectures in the conference. This volume originates from the memorial conference, collecting the dedications of scholars, reminiscences of family members, and 16 academic articles written based on the lectures in the conference, covering a wide range of research hot topics in algebra. The book shows not only scholars' respect and memory for Professor Xihua Cao, but also the research achievements of Chinese scholars at home and abroad.

Book Nilpotent Orbits In Semisimple Lie Algebra

Download or read book Nilpotent Orbits In Semisimple Lie Algebra written by William.M. McGovern and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the 1990s, a circle of ideas emerged relating three very different kinds of objects associated to a complex semisimple Lie algebra: nilpotent orbits, representations of a Weyl group, and primitive ideals in an enveloping algebra. The principal aim of this book is to collect together the important results concerning the classification and properties of nilpotent orbits, beginning from the common ground of basic structure theory. The techniques used are elementary and in the toolkit of any graduate student interested in the harmonic analysis of representation theory of Lie groups. The book develops the Dynkin-Konstant and Bala-Carter classifications of complex nilpotent orbits, derives the Lusztig-Spaltenstein theory of induction of nilpotent orbits, discusses basic topological questions, and classifies real nilpotent orbits. The classical algebras are emphasized throughout; here the theory can be simplified by using the combinatorics of partitions and tableaux. The authors conclude with a survey of advanced topics related to the above circle of ideas. This book is the product of a two-quarter course taught at the University of Washington.
