Book Confessions in the Courtroom

Download or read book Confessions in the Courtroom written by Lawrence S. Wrightsman and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 1993-05-28 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the prosecution introduces confession testimony during a criminal trial, the effect is usually overwhelming. In fact, jurors′ verdicts are affected more by a confession than by eyewitness testimony. While eyewitness studies are massive in numbers, the topic of confession evidence has been largely ignored by psychologists and other social scientists. Confessions in the Courtroom seeks to rectify this discrepancy. This timely book examines how the legal system has evolved in its treatment of confessions over the last half century and discusses, at length, the U.S. Supreme Court′s decision regarding Arizona v. Fulminante which caused a reassessment of the acceptability of confessions generated under duress. The authors examine the causes of confessions and the interrogation procedure used by the police. They also evaluate the process for determining the admissability of confession testimony and provide excellent research on jurors′ reactions to voluntary and coerced confessions. Social scientists, attorneys, members of the criminal justice system, and students will find Confessions in the Courtroom to be an objective and readable treatment on this important topic. "In this short volume, the authors seek "to describe and evaluate what we know about confessions given to police and their impact at the subsequent trial." It is a comprehensive review of the social psychological literature and legal decisions surrounding confessions. One of the primary strengths of the manuscript is the interplay between social science and law fostered by the authors′ clear understanding of the boundaries between these disciplines and appreciation of the substantive areas they share. . . . [The authors] have produced a comprehensive and imminently readable legal and psychological treatise on confessions, valuable for established scholars and for students." --Journal of Contemporary Criminal Justice

Book excerpt: The author of Continental Drift, Rule of the Bone and The Sweet Hereafter returns with a very original, riveting mystery about a young outcast, and a contemporary tale of guilt and redemption. The perfect convergence of writer and subject, Lost Memory of Skin probes the zeitgeist of a troubled society where zero tolerance has erased any hope of subtlety and compassion. Suspended in a modern-day version of limbo, the young man at the centre of Russell Banks's uncompromising and morally complex new novel must create a life for himself in the wake of incarceration. Known in his new identity only as the Kid, he is shackled to a GPS monitoring device and forbidden to go near where children might gather. He takes up residence under a south Florida causeway, in a makeshift encampment with other convicted sex offenders. Barely beyond childhood himself, the Kid, despite his crime, is in many ways an innocent. Enter the Professor, a university sociologist of enormous size and intellect who finds in the Kid the perfect subject for his research. But when the Professor's past resurfaces and threatens to destroy his carefully constructed world, the balance in the two men's relationship shifts. Banks has long been one of our most acute and insightful novelists. Lost Memory of Skin is a masterful work of fiction that unfolds in language both powerful and beautifully lyrical.

The Evil and the Innocent presents a real life and true inside look at the tragedies and suffering of the victims of sexual assault. Those who committed these crimes against the innocent are described and discussed in detail revealing the sadistic fantasies that swirl in the heads of child sex offenders and how these fantasies manifest themselves into reality with total disregard for the pain and suffering inflicted on the victims - the children. These real and actual cases expose heartbreaking and sometimes nauseating facts of sexual assaults and molestations. As difficult as it may be for the reader, these documented details are openly displayed in the book and will stay with the reader for a long time. Seeing the dead eyes and helpless faces of little children who suffered the onslaught of cruel and inhumane acts are necessary ingredients if change is to occur. The book may startle and sicken you because of the cold, hard, facts that until now have been hidden from you. Why? to protect you. Book excerpt: Battle for the Mind by William Sargant is a thought-provoking book that explores the intricacies of human behavior, the power of persuasion, and the influence of social conditioning on our minds. Drawing from his extensive research in psychiatry and psychology, Sargant presents compelling insights into the manipulation of beliefs, ideologies, and thought patterns. Key Aspects of Battle for the Mind: Understanding the Dynamics of Persuasion: Sargant delves into the various techniques employed to influence and manipulate individuals' thoughts and behaviors. He examines the role of propaganda, advertising, religious indoctrination, and other forms of social control in shaping our perceptions and decision-making processes. By unraveling the mechanisms behind persuasion, readers gain a deeper understanding of how external influences can impact their thoughts and beliefs. Unmasking Manipulation and Mind Control: The book explores the darker side of psychological manipulation, focusing on methods used to exploit and control individuals. Sargant sheds light on psychological warfare, brainwashing, and mind control techniques, highlighting their potential to subvert personal autonomy and undermine critical thinking. By exposing these tactics, readers are empowered to recognize and resist manipulative influences, fostering personal growth and self-determination. Empowering Personal Development: Despite delving into the darker aspects of manipulation, Battle for the Mind also emphasizes the importance of personal development and self-awareness. Sargant encourages readers to cultivate independent thinking, strengthen their mental resilience, and reclaim control over their own minds. The book serves as a call to action, urging individuals to actively engage in their own personal growth, break free from societal conditioning, and embrace their authentic selves. Battle for the Mind provokes introspection and prompts readers to question the beliefs and ideologies they hold. It challenges us to examine the sources of our thoughts, the influences that shape our worldview, and the extent to which we have agency over our own minds. By arming readers with knowledge and awareness, Sargant equips them to navigate the complexities of the modern world and take charge of their own personal development. William Sargant: William Sargant, born in 1907, was a British psychiatrist and author. His research and writings focused on the field of psychopharmacology and the effects of drugs on the human mind. Sargant's work, particularly his book Battle for the Mind, examined the ways in which psychological techniques and drug therapies could be used for both therapeutic and manipulative purposes. While his methods and theories have been subject to controversy and debate, Sargant's contributions to the understanding of mental health and the impact of drugs on the brain have had a lasting influence on psychiatric research and practice.

Book The Logic of Hatred

  • Author : Jacob Rogozinski
  • Publisher : Fordham Univ Press
  • Release : 2024-02-06
  • ISBN : 1531505384

Download or read book The Logic of Hatred written by Jacob Rogozinski and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2024-02-06 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book works to uncover the logic of hatred, to understand how this affect manifests itself historically in persecution and terror apparatuses. More than a historical genealogy of persecution, The Logic of Hatred shows what phenomenology can offer to historical understanding. Focusing on the witch-hunts waged in the fifteenth through seventeenth centuries, the first part of the book analyzes the techniques instigators used to designate and annihilate their targets: the search for diabolical stigma, the confession of “truth” extracted by torture, the constitution of an absolute Enemy through the suggestion of conspiracy, of a world turned upside-down, or the figure of Satan. Rogozinski locates one of the origins of the witch-hunt in the anguish that popular uprisings arouse in dominant classes. The second part of the book extends the investigation to related phenomena, such as the extermination of lepers in the Middle Ages and the Reign of Terror during the French Revolution. By studying these historical experiences and marking their differences and similarities, this book shows the passage from exclusion to persecution and how revolts of the oppressed can let themselves be transformed and captured by persecutory politics. The analyses presented thus shed light on conspiracy theory and the terror apparatuses of our time.
