Download or read book Condemned Buildings written by Douglas Darden and published by Princeton Architectural Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Condemned Building is one of our most requested out-of-print books, so we've done a special limited edition reprint (only 750 copies) to meet the ongoing demand for this book. Not long after this book was published, the only one on the work of this gifted architect and delineator, Doug died of leukemia. Fans and friends, including legions of students, quickly bought up the remaining copies, and the difficulty of finding this book has undoubtedly only increased its appeal. Doug said that these projects were "the underbelly of canonical architectural principles and forms", and indeed many are dark, brooding, or sexual in nature: a "kamasutra with the negative." The book covers ten projects, in model, drawing, and "psychoanalytical" text. Douglas Darden taught at Harvard, Columbia, and most recently the University of Colorado at Denver. He was a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome. He is sorely missed, but we're happy to be able to offer his book once again.

Download or read book Private Property and Takings Compensation written by Yun-Chien Chang and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'This thought-provoking and skillfully executed book offers fresh theoretical and empirical insights into questions of eminent domain compensation. Chang's analysis of this interesting and important area is illuminating and sure to spark further dialogue.' – Lee Anne Fennell, University of Chicago Law School, US 'Chang's book represents the state of the art in the legal, economic, and political analysis of compensation for physical takings. Writing with analytical skill and clarity, Chang makes a strong case for fair market value compensation with financial bonuses to properly incentivize assessors.' – Daniel L. Rubinfeld, University of California, Berkeley, US This innovative volume offers a thorough breakdown of the issues surrounding takings compensation – payments made as reimbursement for government takeover of private property. Using examples from New York City and Taiwan, Yun-chien Chang discusses the advantages and disadvantages of different methods of compensation and offers insightful suggestions for future implementation. In an effort to fill the gaps in the current literature, the author identifies the five previously recognized types of compensation – zero, current value, fair market value, economic value and project value compensation – and uses a combination of previous research and new data to determine which is the most economically efficient. In doing so, he sets out a concrete methodology for the evaluation of takings compensation strategies that should prove vital to future policy decisions. Students and professors of law, economics and public policy will find much of interest in the author's careful analysis, as will policymakers and other government officials working on similar land use issues.

Download or read book Science and Heritage written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Lords: Science and Technology Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2006-11-16 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conservation of cultural artefacts, such as buildings, works of art and books presents a fascinating, rich and diverse range of scientific challenges, and the UK has a high reputation in the field, based in large part on past achievements. However, the Committee's report finds that our national standing is now under threat as the sector is fragmented and under-valued, and the DCMS has completely failed to grasp the threat to heritage science, and thus to conservation. The Department's emphasis on widening public access to our cultural heritage is a laudable objective, but this policy needs to be balanced by effective conservation, based on sound science, if we are to leave a sustainable cultural heritage for the benefit of future generations. The Committee also calls on the heritage sector to come together in developing a broad-based national strategy for heritage science, to be championed at departmental level by the newly appointed DCMS Chief Scientific Adviser, and co-ordinated administratively by English Heritage, drawing on input from all bodies active in the sector including those in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
