Book Autobiography of Protest in Hawaii

Download or read book Autobiography of Protest in Hawaii written by Robert H. Mast and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autobiography of Protest in Hawai‘i explores the state's social and economic fabric through the comments of 35 progressive activists. The activists, ranging in age from the mid-30s to the late 70s, comment on their involvement on issues such as housing, labor, land use, poverty, environment, sexual harassment, seniors, and sovereignty. Almost one-half are women and there is an even split between those born in Hawai‘i and those born elsewhere. The book begins with an overview of political activism in Hawai‘i, and then records the oral history of the individual activists. Each was asked to respond to factors that shaped their moral and political lives. They were invited to explore the forces and events in their past that led them to take on an activist role. The activists were also asked to provide personal assessments of insights gained from their experiences and how they can be applied today, their analysis of Hawai‘i at that time, and some speculation on Hawai‘i's future. The result is a book that produces some very interesting and controversial viewpoints on Hawai‘i's political socialization and history.

Book Spoken Hawaiian

Download or read book Spoken Hawaiian written by Samuel H. Elbert and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2021-05-25 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Hawaiian language text, intended for self-learning as well as classroom use, presents the principal conversational and grammatical patterns of the language in 67 lessons, each containing English-Hawaiian dialogues. Emphasis is given to idiomatic speech, and a vocabulary of approximately 800 words, selected on the basis of frequency of usage and cultural importance, is introduced. The frequent humor of the lessons makes Elbert's Spoken Hawaiian an enjoyable learning experience. Also noteworthy is the author's inclusion of old Hawaiian in the text - legends, songs, stories - to enable the student to read the rich Hawaiian traditional literature in the vernacular language. The illustrations by noted artist Jean Charlot are a charming and amusing complement to the text. Spoken Hawaiian will help the student not only to read and speak the language, but at the same time to appreciate the rich heritage of the Hawaiian past and its literature. of the sixty-seven lessons is a sample dialog in Hawaiian with English translation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999. The kaukau a li‘i were lower ranked chiefs who served the AIVi Nui (high chiefs). This work describes how that service role changed over time. Equally important is this study's attempt to understand the Native Hawaiian past in the context of how the kaukau ali 7 lived. The formal relationship between a kaukau alVi and an AIVi Nui was based on the routine performance of hana laxvelawe or "service tasks."

Through all of them is the connecting spirit of the Islands, its special mana, its people, its surf, bringing times past into the present in a special, intimate way. There is Mango Lady, who lived in Waikiki since childhood, watching her ancient preoccupations become irrelevant in the new bustle of development. There is The Man to Whom Surf Cam, the tale of a magical Urban who never failed to attract surf. There is A November Surfer, an adventure of a senior surfer at remote Rabbit Island. There is Hard Port, an intriguing pulling together of Hawaii and Russia, when a longtime surfer visits Nakhodka in the Russian Far East, the land of his ancestors. Finally, there is the flamboyant and unsettling Captain Aloha, a tale of two old surfing friends from Hawaii and the horrors of the war in Vietnam, a unique portrait of psychology and culture, of friendship and passing time."

Download or read book Haoles in Hawaii written by Judy Rohrer and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2010-07-22 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Haoles in Hawai‘i strives to make sense of haole (white person/whiteness in Hawai‘i) and "the politics of haole" in current debates about race in Hawai‘i. Recognizing it as a form of American whiteness specific to Hawai‘i, the author argues that haole was forged and reforged over two centuries of colonization and needs to be understood in that context. Haole reminds us that race is about more than skin color as it identifies a certain amalgamation of attitude and behavior that is at odds with Hawaiian and local values and social norms. By situating haole historically and politically, the author asks readers to think about ongoing processes of colonization and possibilities for reformulating the meaning of haole.
