The editor's own contributions reveal the inner workings of his renowned structural research applications which are used in hundreds of universities worldwide. Commercial and non-commercial applications of particular interest to structural geologists are reviewed. This volume will prove an invaluable resource for professors, instructors, and research students, as well as research scientists in the public services and exploration industries. If you are such a person, have you lectured with the aid of a gyroscopic mouse? Or used Bézier curves to model heterogeneous deformation? Or analyzed a fold structure using a digital terrain model? Book excerpt: This is the most comprehensive listing of commercial earth science, mining & related software available. The format includes the name & address of the vendor, short software description, hardware requirements, & price. Approximately 36 categories of software are covered related to mining, geology, geophysics, economics, hydrology, environmental, mineral processing, geographic information systems, & more. The listings cover programs written for all types of computers from PCs to mainframes. The DIRECTORY is indexed by program name, by vendor & by key words. A companion volume is titled PUBLIC DOMAIN SOFTWARE FOR EARTH SCIENTISTS, which contains information primarily on public domain software & inexpensive (less than $500) commercial packages. Software information has been collected from government agencies, universities & individuals. A VARIOGRAM PRIMER is one of a series of how-to books for analyzing earth science data.Variogram calculation is the first step in a geostatistical analysis & has been applied in minerals, agriculture, forestry, hazardous waste contamination studies, vegetation, & other spatial data. The primer bridges the gap between theory & actual practice.

Book Exploration with a Computer

Download or read book Exploration with a Computer written by William R. Green and published by Pergamon. This book was released on 1991 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive guide to the uses of computers in exploration where "exploration" means the application of scientific methods to discover unknown features of the earth's surface and crust. This includes the search for new mineral and oil resources as well as such related problems as identifying geologic hazards and mapping patterns of pollution. The emphasis is on the practical aspects of using computers. The principles of the various exploration techniques are given only in outline to concentrate on the problems of getting information into a computer-acceptable form, running programs in an efficient manner and maintaining flexibility in choosing analytical methods. The software to do all the tasks related to exploration data analysis is readily available, so mathematical details have not been included.

Book Earth System Modelling Volume 2

Download or read book Earth System Modelling Volume 2 written by Luca Bonaventura and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-10-08 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collected articles in this series are dedicated to the development and use of software for earth system modelling and aims at bridging the gap between IT solutions and climate science. The particular topic covered in this volume addresses the historical development, state of the art and future perspectives of the mathematical techniques employed for numerical approximation of the equations describing atmospheric and oceanic motion. Furthermore, it describes the main computer science and software engineering strategies employed to turn these mathematical methods into effective tools for understanding earth's climate and forecasting its evolution. These methods and the resulting computer algorithms lie at the core of earth system models and are essential for their effectiveness and predictive skill.

Book Geostatistics with Applications in Earth Sciences

Download or read book Geostatistics with Applications in Earth Sciences written by D.D. Sarma and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-09-30 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geostatistics is expanding very fast: concept- and technique-wise. Keeping in view the importance of the subject, it was thought appropriate to bring out the second edition of this book. In this process, Chapter I has been expanded In Chapter 2, incorporating more details on sampling and sampling designs. a section on simulation has been introduced with emphasis on Monte-Carlo simulation with worked out examples. In Chapter 5, a procedure to compute variogram in the case of irregular grid has been outlined. Minor modifications have been made in all other chapters. A new chapter on Introduction to Advanced Geostatistics has been introduced with discussions on universal kriging, disjunctive kriging, conditional simulation and median polish kriging. Review Questions are given at the end of each chapter to facilitate a better understanding of the subject by the student/practitioner. The software codes are put in a CD for convenience of the students/practitoner of geostatistics. A few additions have been made in the bibliography making it more exhaustive. This contains references to the concepts and methods presented, in-depth treatment of related topics and possible extensions. My grateful thanks are due to Dr. B.S. Saini, Principal, Guru Nanak Engg. College, Hyderabad for very helpful support. I hope that this edition will be a welcome one.

Book Exploration Geochemical Data Analysis with the IBM PC

Download or read book Exploration Geochemical Data Analysis with the IBM PC written by G.S. Koch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is another contribution in the continuing series on Computer Methods in the Geosciences. As its title suggests, this volume will be of interest to explorational geochemists who want to analyze their own data on a personal computer (PC). To make it easy for the user, the programs and two trial data sets are provided on the accompanying diskettes. And, by supplying the diskettes, another first is accom plished for the series: instant involvement and interaction for the user. Although other books in the series have provided listings of computer pro grams, Exploration-Geochemical Data Analysis with the IBM PC is the first to supply diskettes. The diskettes, along with the instructions outlined in the text, eliminate the bother (and errors) of pu tting the programs in man ually. The suite of programs for handling and sorting data files; computing and displaying summary statistics; and working with logarithms, geochemical thresholds, and regression - will give geochemists a good repertoire for geochemical exploration data analysis. The diskettes are easy to use and have been tested thoroughly.
