Book Compresses Air Practice Classic Reprint

Download or read book Compresses Air Practice Classic Reprint written by Frank Richards and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Compresses Air Practice It is only the simple truth that the average power and fuel cost of the compressed air now used - compressed by steam power, directly or indirectly, as most of it still is-is not more than one third as great, per quantity unit, as it was twenty years ago; and perhaps there has been, but concerning this no assertion is here made, an equal augmentation of advantage in the useful applications of the air. As to the increase in the twenty years in the volume Of air more or less compressed and industrially employed a thousand fold may be a conservative guess, while to say a hundred fold would suggest an excess of caution or a deficiency of information. It follows that with the vast extension of the field of compressed air employment, there has been a corresponding accumulation of knowledge concerning it, an increase in the number and variety of the things to be told about it, leaving the scope Of the inquiry as to the possibilities beyond the present more extensive than ever. This book just tells what it can, within the permissible limits of it, leaving still more than ever unsaid, but perhaps suggesting things to be supplied by others who may come after. We designedly have to do here with the general rather than with the specific, with the approximate rather than the precise. The book is intended for the many rather than for the few, for those who know little about air rather than for those who mostly know all that is known. Those who need more accurate and detailed information for practical guidance may perhaps get some hints here as to the how, if not so much the where, to look for it. Book Compressed Air

Download or read book Compressed Air written by Theodore Simons and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Compressed Air: A Treatise on the Production, Transmission and Use of Compressed Air In preparing a second edition of this book, its character as an elementary treatise on the principles of Compressed Air has been maintained throughout. To bring the subject up-to-date, however, the greater portion of the chapter on Transmission has been re-written. Modern formulas were introduced with examples of their application. The important effect of altitude differences on Compressed Air installations has been illustrated by reference to new equations in Article 4 and by the example under Article 97. A new Table VIII, containing the principal Compressed Air formulas was substituted for the old table that has become superfluous. The obsolete Hurricane valve in Article 147 has been replaced by a description of the modern Ingersoll-Rogler valve. Altogether, a general revision of the original text and the addition of new material brings the second edition of the book abreast of modern theory and practice. Book Compressed Air

Download or read book Compressed Air written by Lucius I. Wightman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Compressed Air: A Reference Work on the Production, Transmission, and Application of Compressed Air; The Selection, Operation, and Maintenance of Compressed Air Machinery; And the Design of Air Power Plants Compressed air and electricity to-day share between them the great field of power transmission, to the practical exclusion of all other transmission agents. Steam, because of its rapid condensation, can hardly be considered as a practical power transmitter for any but the shortest distances. Hydraulic transmission has had no general application. Mechanical means of transmission, such as shafts, belts, ropes, chains, and gears, are necessarily very limited in their possibilities. Compressed air and electricity, on the contrary, offer almost unlimited possibilities of extension and of diversified application; and in all cases, where properly applied, they are entirely successful when measured by the modem standards of commercial economy. With the relative merits or shortcomings of compressed air and electricity as power-transmitting agents, the pages following have nothing to do. Modem engineering has defined, with reasonable clearness, the respective fields of these agents, into either of which the other agent cannot hope to enter with any degree of success. The rivalry of the earlier days between these two forms of power transmission has given place to a mutual recognition of one another's merits and cordial cooperation in certain classes of work for which neither alone is fully adapted. Book Compressed Air

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Compressed Air: Its Production, Uses, and Applications To limit the consideration of the properties of air when sim ply compressed above the ordinary pressure of the atmosphere was believed to be wanting in scope to make the treatment of the subject complete; this work includes, therefore, a consider ation of the properties of air below atmospheric pressure, for the reason that we are surrounded by an atmosphere compressed by gravity, but it is used in the arts in many ways much below atmospheric pressure, even approaching the zero condition of a vacuum, so that, remote as the connection appears, this subject of partial pressures below the atmosphere properly belongs to a treatise on compressed air. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Compressed Air: Practical Information Upon Air-Compression and the Transmission and Application of Compressed Air IT is only proper to say that much of the matter con tained in the following pages has appeared at intervals dur ing the pasth'two years in the columns of the American of the articles referred to and the remarks which they .have elicited have served to em phasize to me the too evident fact of the general scarcity of practical information about air-compression and the uses of compressed air, and the wide diffusion of misinfor mation and prejudice upon this subject. In spite of it all the use of compressed air is rapidly spreading, and every where with satisfaction to the users. I would gladly do What I can to extend the field of its usefulness, and I have so much faith in its powers that I believe that the best'of all ways to advertise it is simply to tell the straight truth about it, and that I have tried to do. Book Compressed Air

Download or read book Compressed Air written by Elmo G. Harris and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Compressed Air: Theory and Computations After five years trying-out of the first edition the second has been prepared with the view to eliminate all errors and ambiguities and to add matter of value where possible without burdening the text with illustrations and descriptions of matter of only temporary value, such as machines and devices that are in use today but may be succeeded by better ones in a few years. It is the author's opinion that current practice, in the general form of machines and their details, can best be studied in trade circulars, of which there are many very creditable productions illustrating and describing a greater variety of machines than can possibly be shown in a text-book. A new chapter has been added on centrifugal fans and turbine compressors. The author has found a need for a clear, concise presentation of the theory underlying such machines, and believes that a more general knowledge of the technicalities of the subject will lead to material betterment of the cheaper forms of fans that make up the greater portion of the total in use. Appendix B, on design of Logarithmic charts, should be welcome to most students since such matter has not appeared in textbooks in common use. Compressed air has long held the Held for rock drilling underground, though electricity has several times attempted to get into that business. At one time it seemed that compressed air would prove the best motive power for underground pumps, but in more recent years the improvements in centrifugal pumps seem to give electricity the advantage. In general, it may be assumed that where rotation is desired electricity will have the advantage, while where rapid reciprocating motion is desired air will have the advantage. In the latter class are all kinds of pneumatic hammers, which have revolutionized several industries since they have been introduced. It is not the intention to enumerate here the applications of compressed air. It is a very versatile, willing and good-natured servant. It offers a fascinating field for the inventor and its usefulness and already numerous applications will surely increase. Download or read book A Practical Treatise on Compressed Air and Pneumatic Machinery Classic Reprint written by Edward A. Rix and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on Compressed Air and Pneumatic Machinery Within a radius of IO to 20 miles or more, it is not a matter of theoretical speculation, but a result of actual facts, extend ing over a period of many years' experience, that compressed air can be economically produced, conveyed, and utilized as a motive power; and if this power is to be distributed through out a number of buildings or factories, or in the interior of a mine, the absolute safety consistent with the use of compressed air is an element of superiority to which the electrical trans mission has no possible claim. However well insulated the conductors may be, the vicinity of a dynamo is always dangerous, either on the ground of fire or of bodily injury. In a large power station, manned by a picked staff of attend ants, this danger is small indeed; but the conditions are alto gether different if the motor is under the care of a miner or of an ordinary workman. Book Compressed Air Plant

Download or read book Compressed Air Plant written by Robert Peele and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Compressed Air Plant: The Production, Transmission and Use of Compressed Air Among rock-drills, the old piston type has been little changed. Its field of work has become somewhat narrower, chiefly because of the improvements and larger use of hammer-drills for nearly all kinds of rock excavation. For this edition a number of the chapters have been entirely rewritten and several have been expanded. As it was not desired to increase the size of the book, added space has been made by condensation and omission of old matter. The matter contained in the appendix to the 1913 edition has been incorporated in Chapter XX. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Compressed Air Practice in Mining Classic Reprint

Download or read book Compressed Air Practice in Mining Classic Reprint written by David Penman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-21 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Compressed Air Practice in Mining Compressed air has proved itself in very many ways an exceedingly useful agent in coal and metalliferous mining; for transmitting energy into the working-face for drilling and cutting, and for tunnelling Operations, haulage, pumping, and other purposes. The introduction of electricity for mining threatened for a time to supersede compressed air, but experience has proved that electricity 18, under certain condi tions, a source of grave danger, so much so that stringent legislative restrictions have been found necessary. Compressed air, in regard to safety, convenience, and general suitability, has many advantages over electricity and other modes of transmitting power, and should in no wise suffer in comparisons of efficiency if more attention is given to the proper application of the system. Mining engineers in Britain and her colonies do not appear to have given the attention to this subject which it deserves, and possibly the absence of a textbook dealing with it may partly account for this. An endeavour is here made to supply this need, in the first place for students in mining schools and colleges, but it is also hoped the book may prove serviceable to those in practice. It is based upon lectures given to students, and whilst in the first chapter a knowledge of elemen tary mathematics is assumed, and in the second the calculus is used as far as thought necessary, the remainder is for the most part descriptive. A thorough understanding of the principles underlying the generation and use of compressed air in mining practice is most important, and to help students to test their knowledge numerous examples of fully worked out calculations are included In the book.
