Book Compilation of Neutron Reaction and Total Cross Sections at 14 Mev

Download or read book Compilation of Neutron Reaction and Total Cross Sections at 14 Mev written by Suresh C. MATHUR and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A list of cross section data and related information was compiled for total neutron cross sections and the reaction cross sections, (n, p), (n, alpha), and (n,2n) in the energy region around 14 Mev. This compilation includes published data through June 1963. A gamma ray spectral atlas containing 54 sets of spectra of some of the more common elements in the periodic table was obtained by activation analysis with 14.8 Mev neutrons. A one and a five minute irradiation of each element was made and spectra recorded at various times after irradiation to emphasize decay characteristics of the radioactive products from the irradiated element. Gamma ray peaks from the reaction products were identified as well as radioactive decay products from trace impurities in each element whenever possible. Carbon and nitrogen surface contamination of several high purity beryllium samples were measured by proton irradiation. The results seem to indicate that a large percentage of this contamination is in surface layers suggesting that these contaminants may have been added during a machining process. (Author).

Book excerpt: Available 14-MeV experimental neutron activation cross sections are compiled and evaluated for the following reactions of interest for nuclear-energy technology applications: 27Al(n, p)27Mg, Si(n, X)28Al, Ti(n, X)46Sc, Ti(n, X)47Sc, Ti(n, X)48Sc, 51V(n, p)51Ti, 51V(n, .cap alpha.)48Sc, Cr(n, X)52V, 55Mn(n, .cap alpha.)52V, 55Mn(n,2n)54Mn, Fe(n, X)54Mn, 54Fe(n, .cap alpha.)51Cr, 59Co(n, p)59Fe, 59Co(n, .cap alpha.)56Mn, 59Co(n,2n)58Co, 65Cu(n, p)65Ni, Zn(n, X)64Cu, 64Zn(n,2n)63Zn, 113In(n, n')/sup 113m/In, 115In(n, n') /sup 115m/In. The compiled values are listed and plotted for reference without adjustments. From these collected results those values for which adequate supplementary information on nuclear constants, standards and experimental errors is provided are selected for use in reaction-by-reaction evaluations. These data are adjusted as needed to account for recent revisions in the nuclear constants and cross section standards. The adjusted results are subsequently transformed to equivalent cross sections at 14.7 MeV for the evaluation process. The evaluations are performed utilizing a least-squares method which considers correlations between the experimental data. 440 refs., 41 figs., 46 tabs.

Book Nuclear Cross Sections for 95 Mev Neutrons

Download or read book Nuclear Cross Sections for 95 Mev Neutrons written by James DeJuren and published by . This book was released on 1950 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The total cross sections of twelve different elements were measured using the neutron beam from the 184-in. cyclotron, operating with deuterons. Bismuth fission ionization chambers were employed as both monitor and detector in conventional 'good geometry' attenuation measurements in the neutron flux emerging from the 3-in. diameter collimating port in the 10-ft-thick concrete shielding. The mean energy of detection of the neutrons in this experiment is estimated to be 95 Mev. Measurements were also made with a monitor and detector placed inside the concrete shielding where an intense neutron flux over a large area could be obtained. Attenuators of four different elements were placed in front of the detector in a 'poor geometry' arrangement so that attenuation was due essentially to inelastic collisions which degrade the neutron energy below the fission threshold. A second detector was placed outside the concrete shielding In the collimated neutron beam in line with the neutron source, absorber, and first detector. Attenuation in it is caused by both inelastic and elastic scattering. By this arrangement the ratio of inelastic to total cross section can be determined directly in one experiment. The nuclear radii as calculated from the observed cross section, using the theory of the transparent nucleus, vary as 1.38 x 10(exp-13) A(exp(1/3)) cm. In this energy range the ratios of the inelastic to total cross sections are all less than one-half.

Book excerpt: Neutron Cross Sections, Volume 2: Neutron Cross Section Curves presents data for total reaction cross sections and related fission parameters as a function of incident-neutron energy. This book covers energy range from 0.01 eV to 200 MeV to exclude crystalline and magnetic effects for slow neutrons and relativistic effects for high energy neutrons. The data in this volume are grouped into sections corresponding to the element of the target nucleus in the neutron-induced reaction. These sections are ordered in increasing atomic number. Within a section, graphical data are presented for the natural element followed by the isotopes of that element in order of increasing atomic mass. A list of the reaction types is provided at the end of each section. This book also provides graphical section, wherein each graphical page is annotated on the outer edge with a symbol for an element or isotope followed by the list of the cross section data for that element or isotope. The data plotted in the graphical section are tagged by a mnemonic consisting of year, laboratory, and author's last name. This tag can be used to find the corresponding reference on the bibliographic pages.

Book excerpt: Neutron Cross Sections presents the principles of cross-section measurement and use, as well as sufficient theory so that the general behavior of cross sections is made understandable. This compilation is a direct result of experiences connected with the collection and evaluation of cross-section data during the past eight years at ""Sigma Centre"", Brookhaven National Laboratory. Here, experimental results received from laboratories throughout the world are carefully evaluated and compiled in the curves and tables of the large volume Neutron Cross Sections, The most recent version of the compilation, known as BNL 325, appeared 1 July 1955, and Supplement 1 to BNL 325 was published on 1 January 1957. The compilation itself consists almost completely of cross sections at specific energies, shown in the form of curves or tables, with only brief explanatory texts. The text opens with discussions of the general properties of cross sections and principles of nuclear structure that are important to the understanding of cross-section behavior. Separate chapters follow that describe specific techniques for measuring cross sections along with experimental results involving fast neutrons, resonance neutrons, resonances in fissionable materials, and thermal neutrons.
