Book The Competitive Advantage of Nations The Case of Turkey

Download or read book The Competitive Advantage of Nations The Case of Turkey written by Özlem Öz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-23 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999, this volume applies Professor Michael Porter’s diamond framework (1990) to the Turkish glass, construction, leather clothes, automobile and flat steel industries. Özlam Öz aims primarily to contribute towards an improvement of this framework, and thus towards a better understanding of the sources of competitive advantage. Her research presents a new approach to evaluate the competitiveness of the Turkish economy, given that alternative studies usually focus on factors like exchange rates and the cost of labour and raw materials as the determinants of competitive advantage. The author begins her book by providing an evaluation of the diamond framework linked to the debate created by the publication of The Competitive Advantage of Nations. She then identifies the pattern of advantage in Turkey by specifying the internationally competitive industries and clusters. This is followed by a detailed examination of the five Turkish industry case studies - glass, construction, leather clothes, automobile and flat steel industries. The findings are generally supportive of Porter. The results suggest, however, several major areas in the framework - especially domestic rivalry and the role of government - where one or more of the Turkish cases question Porter's hypothesises. The book ends with the implications of the study for the sources of competitive advantage in general and for the Turkish economy in particular. Porter and his diamond framework are both unquestionably influential. Improvements upon it forwarded in this book will be of use to academic readers as well as strategic planners and policy makers.

Book The Effects of Competition

Download or read book The Effects of Competition written by George Symeonidis and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2002-01-18 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical and empirical study of the effects of competition across a broad range of industries. Policies to promote competition are high on the political agenda worldwide. But in a constantly changing marketplace, the effects of more intense competition on firm conduct, market structure, and industry performance are often hard to distinguish. This study combines game-theoretic models with empirical evidence from a "natural experiment" of policy reform. The introduction in the United Kingdom of the 1956 Restrictive Trade Practices Act led to the registration and subsequent abolition of explicit restrictive agreements between firms and the intensification of price competition across a range of manufacturing industries. An equally large number of industries were not affected by the legislation. Using data from before and after the 1956 act, this book compares the two groups of industries to determine the effect of price competition on concentration, firm and plant numbers, profitability, advertising intensity, and innovation. The book avoids two problems common to empirical studies of competition: how to measure the intensity of competition and how to unravel the links between competition and other variables. Because the change in the intensity of competition had an external cause, there is no need to measure the intensity of competition directly, and it is possible to identify one-way causal effects when estimating the impact of competition. The book also examines issues such as the industries in which collusion is more likely to occur; the effect of cartels and cartel laws on market structure and profitability; the links between competition, advertising, and innovation; and the constraints on the exercise of merger and antitrust policies.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Code of Fair Competition for the American Glassware Industry as Approved on January 16, 1934 This Industry is intimately related to the Glass Container Indus try and a number of plants have their production divided between these two Codes. For that reason the hour and wage provisions of this Code have been made to conform with the hour and wage pro visions of the Glass Container Code. For clerical and office employees a maximum is permitted Of forty (40) hours per week averaged over each four (4) weeks' period and not in excess Of forty-eight (48) hours in any one week. The minimum wage is forty cents per hour, unless the hourly rate for the same class of work on July 15, 1929, was less than forty cents (4095) per hour, in which case the minimum wage Shall be not less than the wages paid in July 1929, and in no case less than thirty cents per hour. The outlets for the products of this Industry are wholesalers, job bers, retailers, and various manufacturers Of other products who use glass in the fabrication of their commodities, including the manu facture of storage batteries, Signal devices, artificial illuminating equipment, etc. The exports to foreign markets are small com pared with the total volume of business. The demand for glass products is fairly uniform throughout the year, due to the wide uses to which glass has been put. Due to the fact that the American Glassware Industry is SO interwoven with other industries throughout the country, an upturn in general busi ness conditions Should be reflected favorably in this Industry.
