Book Poverty in the Theology of John Calvin

Download or read book Poverty in the Theology of John Calvin written by Bonnie L. Pattison and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2006-11-01 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is the thesis of this study that in Calvin's theology, poverty and affliction--not splendor and glory--mark and manifest the kingdom of God on earth. Poverty makes the kingdom visible to the eyes and therefore recognizable as divine. Poverty acts to reveal or disclose that which is spiritual, or that which is "of God" in the Christian faith. This does not mean that Calvin sees the condition of physical poverty as revelatory in and of itself. Rather, poverty and affliction function as agents of divine revelation. They are a condition or a chosen instrument God uses to disclose to humanity the nature of true spirituality, godliness, and poverty of spirit. How this is demonstrated in Calvin's thought depends upon the specific doctrine under examination. This study explores three particular areas in Calvin's theology where his theological understanding of spiritual poverty and physical poverty (or affliction) intersect--his Christology, his doctrine of the Christian life, and his ecclesiology.

In addition, Connections places each Psalm reading in conversation with the other lections for the day to highlight the themes of the liturgical season. Finally, sidebars offer additional connections to Scripture for each Sunday or worship day. Book Richard Cumberland and Natural Law

Download or read book Richard Cumberland and Natural Law written by Linda Kirk and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2022-05-26 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No study in the history of seventeenth century thought is completed without some mention of Richard Cumberland, one of the many writers who aimed to refute Hobbes. Cumberland remains on of the few important writers of his century on whom, until now, nothing of substance has been written In the past Cumberland has been somewhat unfairly overshadowed by his fellow anti-Hobbists. His one important work, De Legibus Naturae, first appeared in Latin in 1672 and has never been satisfactorily translated into English. That he published so little in such a prolific age was unusual, but his influence through his work continued to be felt well into the nineteenth century. It is now clear that he went further than both Grotius and Pufendorf in devising a system which prefigured classical utilitarianism, propounding a cosmology based upon the reconciliation of charity and self-interest. In this study, Cumberland is placed for the first time, in his intellectual and historical setting. The author describes Cumberland's life, his work as Bishop of Peterborough, his book and above all his position in the development of natural law theory.

Book Deuteronomy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ian Cairns
  • Publisher : Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing
  • Release : 1992-01-31
  • ISBN : 1467445525
  • Pages : 324 pages

Download or read book Deuteronomy written by Ian Cairns and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 1992-01-31 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this commentary Ian Cairns presents Deuteronomy as a slowly evolving, complex composite — as legal code, as treaty text or covenant, as Moses' farewell speech, and as the final volume of the Pentateuch. Despite Deuteronomy's structural complexity, however, Cairns shows how the theme "Word and Presence" permeates the entire book: God is the living Presence who can be encountered and known through his word addressed to each generation in turn. This commentary is unique in its emphasis on the theology of Deuteronomy (e.g., law as "humane instruction") as well as in its modern applications and illustrations from non-Western cultures.
