Book excerpt: SHAW 18 offers fourteen articles that illuminate aspects of Shaw's family history, relations with contemporaries, evolving reputation, and dramatic works. Dan H. Laurence presents an authoritative genealogy of the Shaw and Gurly sides of Shaw's family. Among discoveries that have long eluded Shaw's biographers is the birthdate of Elinor Agnes "Yuppy" Shaw, Shaw's sister. Michael W. Pharand assesses Shaw's intense dislike of Sarah Bernhardt. Stanley Weintraub analyzes Shaw's presence in the plays of Eugene O'Neill. Shaw's Advice to Irishmen, a newspaper account of Shaw's 1918 Dublin lecture "Literature in Ireland," records Shaw's comments on George Moore, J. M. Synge, and James Joyce. Robert G. Everding surveys Shaw festivals from 1916 in Ireland to the present-day Shaw festivals in Ontario and Milwaukee. In a review of Frank Harris on Bernard Shaw (1931), Richard Aldington dismisses Shaw as human being, thinker, and dramatist: "You must be a Shavian to admire and love Shaw the artist." In an interview with Leon Hugo, biographer Michael Holroyd discusses his biography of G.B.S., responses to his biography, and future work involving G.B.S. Jeffrey M. Wallmann argues that alienation in Shaw's plays enhances their contemporary value. Bernard F. Dukore investigates Shaw's reasons for discarding the original final act of The Philanderer. Rodelle Weintraub argues persuasively that You Never Can Tell requires the audience to choose between "Crampton's reality" and "Crampton's dream." Mark H. Sterner, weighing the various charges against Ann Whitefield's character in Man and Superman, concludes that Shaw's treatment of her and Tanner "as significantly different, but nevertheless equal . . . in itself was a revolutionary change in the status of sexual power relationships." Julie A. Sparks identifies W. W. Henley's sonnet "'Liza" as a likely source not only for some of Eliza's traits in Pygmalion but also for images in Man and Superman and Major Barbara. Charles A. Carpenter considers Buoyant Billions and Farfetched Fables in the context of Shaw's response to the birth of the atomic age. Paul Bauschatz, evaluating the differences between My Fair Lady and Pygmalion, illustrates why the film can reflect Shaw's play "only uneasily." SHAW 18 includes five reviews of recent additions to Shavian scholarship as well as John R. Pfeiffer's "Continuing Checklist of Shaviana."

And how about little orphan 'Annie'? Well, 'Pygmalion' is the play that paved the ways for these - and countless other - rags-to-riches films, plays, and books. In it, phonetics scientist professor Henry Higgins and linguist Colonel Pickering make a bet. The scientist wagers that he can turn Cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle into a woman with the poise and diction of a duchess. She is given new clothes, speech lessons - and subjected to merciless ridicule. Becoming Shaw's most famous play, ́Pygmalion ́ throws blinding light on the invidious habits and traditions at both levels of society. George Bernard Shaw (1856–1950) was a giant of the literary and political world at the end of the 19th century and deep into the 20th century. Best known as a playwright, he was also a famous critic, political activist and polemicist, stoking controversy to provoke debate. His first successful play was 'Arms and the Man', which was followed by classics including 'Man and Superman' and 'Pygmalion', which was turned into the musical 'My Fair Lady'. In 1925, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. His opinions still divide critics, but he is widely acknowledged as second only to William Shakespeare as a playwright.

Book excerpt: Pygmalion is a play by George Bernard Shaw, named after a Greek mythological character. It was first presented on stage to the public in 1913.Professor of phonetics Henry Higgins makes a bet that he can train a bedraggled Cockney flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, to pass for a duchess at an ambassador's garden party by teaching her to assume a veneer of gentility, the most important element of which, he believes, is impeccable speech. The play is a sharp lampoon of the rigid British class system of the day and a commentary on women's independence. In ancient Greek mythology, Pygmalion fell in love with one of his sculptures, which then came to life. The general idea of that myth was a popular subject for Victorian era English playwrights, including one of Shaw's influences, W. S. Gilbert, who wrote a successful play based on the story called Pygmalion and Galatea first presented in 1871. Shaw would also have been familiar with the burlesque version, Galatea, or Pygmalion Reversed. Shaw's play has been adapted numerous times, most notably as the musical My Fair Lady and the film of that name.Shaw mentioned that the character of Professor Henry Higgins was inspired by several British professors of phonetics: Alexander Melville Bell, Alexander J. Ellis, Tito Pagliardini, but above all, the cantankerous Henry Sweet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pygmalion is a 5-act play by George Bernard Shaw. It was written in 1912 and first produced in 1913. The plot revolves around Professor Henry Higgins' bet with a colleague over whether he can transform a low-class flower girl, Liza Doolittle, into the equivalent of a Duchess in just 6 months. Pygmalion was a Greek mythological figure who fell in love with a sculpture he had carved and was a popular theme in Victorian drama. Most people would be familiar with the characters Eliza Doolittle and Henry Higgins from the hit 1956 musical My Fair Lady, which was adapted from Pygmalion, though the plots differ in small but significant ways. In particular Shaw wanted to avoid any sense of a "happy ending" and, after viewing a performance of the play where an extra scene had been added, he wrote a sequel which definitively states what came after. The sequel was included in the published edition.

Book excerpt: One of George Bernard Shaw's best-known plays, Pygmalion was a rousing success on the London and New York stages, an entertaining motion picture and a great hit with its musical version, My Fair Lady. An updated and considerably revised version of the ancient Greek legend of Pygmalion and Galatea, the 20th-century story pokes fun at the antiquated British class system. In Shaw's clever adaptation, Professor Henry Higgins, a linguistic expert, takes on a bet that he can transform an awkward cockney flower seller into a refined young lady simply by polishing her manners and changing the way she speaks. In the process of convincing society that his creation is a mysterious royal figure, the Professor also falls in love with his elegant handiwork. The irresistible theme of the emerging butterfly, together with Shaw's brilliant dialogue and splendid skills as a playwright, have made Pygmalion one of the most popular comedies in the English language. A staple of college drama courses, it is still widely performed.

Book excerpt: When professor of phonetics Henry Higgins wages with Colonel Pickering that he could teach even a gutter-mouthed flower seller how to speak like a duchess, little does he expect that his social experiment will be riddled with difficulties, and that, behind her cockney parlance, the girl in question, Eliza Doolittle, has a mind, ideas and aspirations of her own. Things come to a crux when the creature starts to rebel against her creator – and the scene is set for a play that questions the class system, social appearances and the role of women in society. Universally regarded as Shaw's most successful work for the stage, Pygmalion – here presented in its original 1916 version, with a wealth of extra material, including the author's subsequent revisions and additions to the text – has spawned a great number of screen adaptations, among them the famous 1956 Broadway musical My Fair Lady, and shows ancient myth's undiminishing ability to find new incarnations in modern life.

Book excerpt: Pygmalion is a play by George Bernard Shaw, named after a Greek mythological figure. It was first presented on stage to the public in 1913.Pygmalion sees professor of phonetics Henry Higgins making a bet that he can train a bedraggled Cockney flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, to pass for a duchess at an ambassador's garden party by teaching her impeccable speech. The play is a sharp lampoon of the rigid British class system of the day and a commentary on women's independence. The play was well received by critics in major cities following its premieres in Vienna, London, and New York. The initial release in Vienna garnered several reviews describing the show as a positive departure from Shaw's usual dry and didactic style.[8] The Broadway premiere in New York was praised in terms of both plot and acting, described as "a love story with brusque diffidence and a wealth of humor."[9] Reviews of the production in London were slightly less unequivocally positive, with the Telegraph noting that the play was deeply diverting with interesting mechanical staging, although the critic ultimately found the production somewhat shallow and overly lengthy.[10] The London Times, however, praised both the characters and actors (especially Sir Herbert Tree as Higgins and Mrs. Patrick Campbell as Eliza) and the happy if "unconventional" ending.Pygmalion remains Shaw's most popular play. The play's widest audiences know it as the inspiration for the highly romanticized 1956 musical and 1964 film My Fair Lady.Pygmalion has transcended cultural and language barriers since its first production. The British Museum contains "images of the Polish production...; a series of shots of a wonderfully Gallicised Higgins and Eliza in the first French production in Paris in 1923; a fascinating set for a Russian production of the 1930s. There was no country which didn't have its own 'take' on the subjects of class division and social mobility, and it's as enjoyable to view these subtle differences in settings and costumes as it is to imagine translators wracking their brains for their own equivalent of 'Not bloody likely'."Joseph Weizenbaum named his artificial intelligence computer program ELIZA after the character Eliza Doolittle
