Book Comparison of Oxidation and Reduction Methods in the Determination of Forms of Sulfur in Coal Classic Reprint

Download or read book Comparison of Oxidation and Reduction Methods in the Determination of Forms of Sulfur in Coal Classic Reprint written by J. K. Kuhn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-07 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Comparison of Oxidation and Reduction Methods in the Determination of Forms of Sulfur in Coal Stopcock 1 (fig. 1) is Opened fully. Stopcock 2 is Opened gradually until a vigorous bubbling of nitrogen through the cadmium sulfate solution is established. The tank pressure is regulated to maintain atmospheric pressure in the system, as is evidenced by the level of mercury in the blow-by tube. With the contents of the flask still being stirred and cooled in the ice bath, a 50 - ml portion of water is added very slowly through the serum cap from a syringe. After the first 5 ml have been added drop by drop from a small needle, the reaction in the flask subsides sufficiently to allow the rest of the water to be introduced more conveniently from a larger needle. A 50-ml volume of 30 percent hydrochloric acid is then added through the serum cap. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2016-11-20 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Analysis of Sulphur Forms in Coal Iron pyrites has been known as one of the constituents of coal for a great many years and investigators have had fairly good evidence that sulphur in organic combination also existed in coal. The first method proposed for the analysis Of these two forms utilized sodium hypobromite.2 The supposition was that the hypobromite dissolved the pyrites and sulphates without affecting the organic sulphur, but no proof was advanced to Show that this was correct. Book Direct Determination of Organic and Inorganic Sulfur in Coal by Controlled Oxidation

Download or read book Direct Determination of Organic and Inorganic Sulfur in Coal by Controlled Oxidation written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overall objective of this project is to develop an analytical method to directly measure the forms of organic sulfur in coal. The method will provide a route to monitor the effectiveness of coal preparation research directed toward removal of organic sulfur in coal. The approach involves subjecting diluted coal samples simultaneously to an oxygen flow and a linear increase in temperature. Distinctive sulfur dioxide evolution patterns are observed among coals of different rank and between raw and treated coals. Assignments have been made relating each specific sulfur dioxide evolution to the non-aromatic organic, aromatic organic, and inorganic sulfur present in coals and treated coals. Work is progressing on schedule to optimize experimental conditions and to improve the efficiency of the controlled-atmosphere programmed-temperature oxidation (CAPTO) method by developing a multiple sample instrumental system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sulfur Reduction of Illinois Coals, Vol. 1: Washability Studies The potential reduction in sulfur (and ash) that can be obtained with a coal can be determined by making float - and sink (washability) tests with the coal in a laboratory. As described in more detail later in this report, this process is essentially one of determining the weight percentages and chemical compositions of the material that is collected from liquid baths of different specific gravities The percentage of coal that floats is commonly called recovery, and the mater ial that sinks is often called reject. A commercial preparation plant cannot provide as precise a separation of float - and sink products as that obtained in the laboratory. Book The Analysis of Coal With Phenol as a Solvent Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Analysis of Coal With Phenol as a Solvent Classic Reprint written by S. W. Parr and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Analysis of Coal With Phenol as a Solvent I. Present 'methods of Coal Analysis. - There are two processes in vogue at the present time for the chemical examination of coal; one is the ultimate, and the other is the proximate method of analysis. In the first the organic or' combustible part Of the coal is separated into its elemental constituents, carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen. The mineral or non-combustible portion is separately determined under two items as ash and moisture. In the proximate method the organic material is separated into two divisions, one being that portion which under high temperature and out Of Contact with the air passes off in the gaseous form, and the other that part which remains behind as the non-volatile or coke-form ing carbon. Each procedure has doubtless come into use as the result of a specific demand. For example, the engineer needed the data from which he could calculate the total heat of the coal and, in arriving at a heat balance, he must also have at hand any negative factors charge able to the fuel, such as the quantity and character of the gaseous products of combustion. These items, therefore, would call for the data furnished by the ultimate methods of analysis.' The proximate method was developed as a natural accompaniment of the gas and coke industries, since it furnished in either case an index of the yield which might be expected from a given coal. Formerly, also, the quantity of volatile matter was made to serve as an index of the grade or quality of a coal. Thus the data from proximate analyses have been put into the form of fuel ratios or the ratio of the non-volatile to the volatile part of the coal, such ratios supposedly serving as an indication of the general class or type to which the coal belonged.
