Book New Comparative Grammar of Greek and Latin

Download or read book New Comparative Grammar of Greek and Latin written by Andrew L Sihler and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-11-13 with total page 711 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like Carl Darling Buck's Comparative Grammar of Greek and Latin (1933), this book is an explanation of the similarities and differences between Greek and Latin morphology and lexicon through an account of their prehistory. It also aims to discuss the principal features of Indo-European linguistics. Greek and Latin are studied as a pair for cultural reasons only; as languages, they have little in common apart from their Indo-European heritage. Thus the only way to treat the historical bases for their development is to begin with Proto-Indo-European. The only way to make a reconstructed language like Proto-Indo-European intelligible and intellectually defensible is to present at least some of the basis for reconstructing its features and, in the process, to discuss reasoning and methodology of reconstruction (including a weighing of alternative reconstructions). The result is a compendious handbook of Indo-European phonology and morphology, and a vade mecum of Indo-European linguistics--the focus always remaining on Greek and Latin. The non-classical sources for historical discussion are mainly Vedic Sanskrit, Hittite, and Germanic, with occasional but crucial contributions from Old Irish, Avestan, Baltic, and Slavic.

Book Comparative Grammar of the Greek Language

Download or read book Comparative Grammar of the Greek Language written by Joseph Wright and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Comparative Grammar of the Greek Language In writing this Grammar I have followed as far as possible the plan adopted in the other Grammars of the Series, my object being to furnish students with a concise account of the phonology, word-formation, and inflexions of the language. As the book is not intended for specialists some more or less important details have been intentionally omitted. This is especially the case in regard to those dialects which have been preserved in such scanty fragments as to render it impossible for us to give a full account of their phonology. It must not, however, be assumed that these dialects have been entirely omitted; on the contrary, I have made considerable use of them in the phonology and elsewhere, wherever they have helped to throw light upon the development and history of the other dialects, such as Attic, Ionic, Doric, Aeolic. Much of the time and labour spent on this Grammar has been taken up with selecting examples from the vast amount of material which I had collected to illustrate the sound-laws of the various dialects. This selection was necessary if I was to keep steadily in view the class of students for whom the Series of Grammars was originally planned, otherwise it would have been far easier to produce a Comparative Greek Grammar at least three times the size of the present one. Book The Cambridge Grammar of Classical Greek

Download or read book The Cambridge Grammar of Classical Greek written by Evert van Emde Boas and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-21 with total page 856 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first full-scale reference grammar of Classical Greek in English in a century. The first work of its kind to reflect significant advances in linguistics made in recent decades, it provides students, teachers and academics with a comprehensive yet user-friendly treatment. The chapters on phonology and morphology make full use of insights from comparative and historical linguistics to elucidate complex systems of roots, stems and endings. The syntax offers linguistically up-to-date descriptions of such topics as case usage, tense and aspect, voice, subordinate clauses, infinitives and participles. An innovative section on textual coherence treats particles and word order and discusses several sample passages in detail, demonstrating new ways of approaching Greek texts. Throughout the book numerous original examples are provided, all with translations and often with clarifying notes. Clearly laid-out tables, helpful cross-references and full indexes make this essential resource accessible to users of all levels.

Book Greece s labyrinth of language

Download or read book Greece s labyrinth of language written by Raf Van Rooy and published by Language Science Press. This book was released on with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fascinated with the heritage of ancient Greece, early modern intellectuals cultivated a deep interest in its language, the primary gateway to this long-lost culture, rehabilitated during the Renaissance. Inspired by the humanist battle cry “To the sources!” scholars took a detailed look at the Greek source texts in the original language and its different dialects. In so doing, they saw themselves confronted with major linguistic questions: Is there any order in this immense diversity? Can the Ancient Greek dialects be classified into larger groups? Is there a hierarchy among the dialects? Which dialect is the oldest? Where should problematic varieties such as Homeric and Biblical Greek be placed? How are the differences between the Greek dialects to be described, charted, and explained? What is the connection between the diversity of the Greek tongue and the Greek homeland? And, last but not least, are Greek dialects similar to the dialects of the vernacular tongues? Why (not)? This book discusses and analyzes the often surprising and sometimes contradictory early modern answers to these questions.
