Download or read book Innate Immune Cell Therapy of Cancer written by Asha B. Pillai and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-09-13 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adoptive cellular immunotherapy of cancer, particularly chimeric antigen receptor-transduced T cell (CAR-T) therapies, have enjoyed an explosion of clinical trials and translational and basic research in the past decade. The concept and design of the CAR, though originally intended to optimize targeting of innate natural killer cells (NK cells) to tumor-specific antigens, was laterally applied in the past decade to conventional autologous and later third-party allogeneic T cells with first-in-kind successes in leukemia immunotherapy in both adults and children. This approach also spawned the development of an entire industry focused on cancer immunotherapy, laying the foundation for the current paradigm shifts away from toxic chemo/radiotherapy to immune targeting. Aside from cytokine-release toxicities, specific obstacles plaguing existing CAR-T cell therapies include suboptimal killing by fatigued or senescent autologous patient-derived T cells derived, acquisition of tumor resistance to T-cell based immune therapies, and graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) associated with allogeneic conventional T cell therapies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The SAGE Encyclopedia of Stem Cell Research, Second Edition is filled with new procedures and exciting medical breakthroughs, including executive orders from the Obama administration reversing barriers to research imposed under the Bush administration, court rulings impacting NIH funding of research based on human embryonic stem cells, edicts by the Papacy and other religious leaders, and the first success in cloning human stem cells. Stem cell biology is clearly fueling excitement and potential in traditional areas of developmental biology and in the field of regenerative medicine, where they are believed to hold much promise in addressing any number of intractable medical conditions. This updated second edition encyclopedia will expand on information that was given in the first edition and present more than 270 new and updated articles that explore major topics in ways accessible to nonscientists, thus bringing readers up-to-date with where stem cell biology stands today, including new and evolving ethical, religious, legal, social, and political perspectives. This second edition reference work will serve as a universal resource for all public and academic libraries. It is an excellent foundation for anyone who is interested in the subject area of stem cell biology. Key Features: Reader’s Guide, Further Readings, Cross References, Chronology, Resource Guide, Index A Glossary will elucidate stem cell terminology for the nonscientist Statistics and selected reprints of major journal articles that pertain to milestones achieved in stem cell research Documents from Congressional Hearings on stem cells and cloning Reports to the President’s Council on Bioethics, and more

Download or read book The Business of Healthcare Innovation written by Lawton Robert Burns and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-08-25 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Business of Healthcare Innovation is the first wide-ranging analysis of business trends in the manufacturing segment of the health care industry. In this leading edge volume, Professor Burns focuses on the key role of the 'producers' as the main source of innovation in health systems. Written by professors of the Wharton School and industry executives, this book provides a detailed overview of the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, genomics/proteomics, medical device and information technology sectors. It analyses the market structures of these sectors as well as the business models and corporate strategies of firms operating within them. Most importantly, the book describes the growing convergence between these sectors and the need for executives in one sector to increasingly draw upon trends in the others. It will be essential reading for students and researchers in the field of health management, and of great interest to strategy scholars, industry practitioners and management consultants.
Download or read book Biobanking and Regenerative Medicine written by David T. Harris and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-11-19 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regenerative medicine and tissue engineering play significant roles in the treatment of currently intractable conditions, such as chronic heart failure, stroke, chronic osteoarthritis, and other maladies. Regenerative medicine and tissue engineering generally depend on the utilization of stem cells to treat patients but may also utilize mature cells that would not normally be considered as stem cells (e.g., skin). Stem cells (like mature cells) may be obtained from many sources in the body including bone marrow, cord blood, cord tissue, adipose tissue, etc. Although stem cells are often used in therapy immediately upon isolation, in many circumstances, the stem and progenitor cells will be harvested, processed and banked frozen until a later time. Biobanking is a convenient alternative to same-day therapeutic use, in that it allows for patient recovery (e.g., from liposuction), provides time to identify the best treatment options, and may allow for multiple interventions with additional patient inconvenience or risk.
